Both our kids are likely to get croup every Fall and Winter. Our 2 year old had a croupy night last Saturday night. Because we have been through it so many times, we ran some steam and then bundled her up to go outside and let the cool air open her up to breathe better. She was on a steroid for 3 days as well. It worked quickly and the croup cough was gone the next day. However for some reason this mucus cough has not stopped. Every night at 12:30 or so she is up coughing so hard she has thrown up in her crib 3 times this week. We have tried using the humidifier, steam, her mattress is elevated, and we are using the nose suction to get her nose cleared. Do you moms have any other tricks to help rid her of this cough and help her and parents gets some sleep.
Thanks,

What can I do next?

I do know a mom who changed all the chemicals in her house to chemical free products to clean with and her son was taken off all the medication he was on for his asthma. If you would like to know more about the chemical free products just let me know.

sounds like an infection to me. was she on an antibiotic too? besides the steroid. Tell the doc. they may have given her the wrong one or for not long enough. I would give her a good childrens vitamin from a health food store and chewable flax or fish oil they keep inflammation down, Nordic naturals is a good brand. I have given mine the oils since they were 6 months old.I squirted it in their mouth. If she is on another antibiotic Dr. Natura.com makes a great probiotic for kids so their tummy flora doesn't get wiped out with the multi antibiotics. Good luck.

What works for me is making my 3 yr. older a tea she loves. I cut up a small onion, 4 cloves of garlic and let it simmer in some water for about 30 minutes. Let it cool, strain it, squeeze some lemon & add raw honey. Sometimes I cut up ginger & add it to the onion, garlic mixture. It really breaks the mucus up really good. I usually make sure I give it to her at night before bed & be sure to elevate her head. I also make sure she gets a couple of drops of liquid infant vitamin D drops in juice helps boost the immune system. You may try adding a few cut up cloves of garlic to soup, that's another way to get the garlic in also. I agree with something someone else posted about getting rid of chemical household products. Like scented candles, plug-ins and comet cleanser etc. A friend of mine's son had some issues & once she switched to green products his breathing issues disappeared. I hope you find something that works.

Have you tried ibuprofen and benedryl (or the generic allergy medicine). This always works for my kids. But you have to make sure that it is not an infection like bronchitus or something. Ibuprofen takes the swelling down, which causes mucus and the coughing. And the benedryl dries up the sinuses. Best wishes to you.

You might not have heard it but I used a old age formula and has worked with us all the time. Oil and Camphor. Heat them for 30 sc and apply warm on chest and back and around nose. The cough slows down the very next day. Do it twice a week, whole winter will be a breeze. I have been doing since she was 2 months old now she is almmost 5.

Add ajwain seed and filter and use, the growth pain in legs and hands are off.

Try it! We use Mustard Oil, The olive oil will work too.

Hope you feel better with him!

My kiddos are both on a supplement that has helped them dramatically with their immune systems. I know of other moms whose kiddos have had similar problems with their little ones and croup, asthma, etc, etc, who have also had great results for them. Let me know if you'd like more info about it. Hope your little one feels better soon!

Vicks vapor rub for babies. Saline nose spray. I'm taking a cough syrup that cold/flu with antitussive/expectorant. It helps bring up mucus and quiets your cough. Mine is an off brand from the grocery store. It's for adults and children 2 and up. Hope your kids are better soon.

she may have pertussis? anyways elevate her mattress and make sure she isnt eating "mucus producers" . also if this is happening every fall and winter have their vitamin D levels checked as they may be deficient and that would make them more susceptible to illness. i hope she is over it quickly!

Vicks Vapor Rub on the feet with the socks. It works! And a nebulizer. My daughter has pre-asthma (dr. is hesitant to fully diagnose because she is only 2, but every time she gets a cold, it goes straight to her lungs). So this is usually our routine at nights when she is sick: Nebulizer treatment (doctor can give you the machine, and a prescription for the medicine), Vicks on the feet with socks, Children's motrin, humidifier turned on in the room and sometimes saline nose spray. We usually manage to make it through the nights with this. Good luck!

It sounds like if your children get it the same time every year that they may have asthma. Drs don't like to put that on a child's chart, because the diagonsis will stay with them for the rest of their lives - insurance. Signs of asthma - starts with a cold. when it is cold outside starts coughing spells, and coughing at bedtime.

All the best.
