I agree to consider whether asthma could be an issue.

Otherwise, have you tried putting Vick's on the soles of his feet and covering with socks? I know, it is an old wives tale, but I have done it with my daughter and it quiets her right down...

Also, maybe try a humidifier in his room.

Any chance it is asthma? Keep an eye on it. If he presents with wheezing or shortness of breath get him to a doctor.
Have you tried mucinex? It used to be by prescription only. It's used for breaking up mucus. He needs to be drinking fluids like crazy but especially if he takes the mucinex.

Zarbee's. Incredible, natural, effective. My ds has a hacking cough especially at night for two weeks before we heard about this. I think he has coughed once or twice a night since we started it!

I would call the on call doc at your pediatrician's office if it's something you are really concerned about, but yes, if he starts wheezing or having shortness of breath, he will need to go to the ER. Good luck, I hope he feels better and that you all get some sleep tonight.

My daughter had a cough. She also sniffled and had red under her eyes. I remembered once the ped said the red under her eyes meant she had an allergy so we gave her benedryl. She quit coughing and sniffling. good luck finding what works for your son. hope he feels better soon

My 9 year old had a cough like that in the summer. The doc diagnosed her with walking pneumonia. 2 days later found out it was whooping cough. (They tested her at our insistence since I knew it was going around). FYI... My whole family then had to be treated. Also my daughter was vacinated.

Winter air is dry and can cause a cough. I cough more in the winter time. He could also have a post nasal drip caused by allergies. Many people are sensitive to dust and mold which gets into the air with heating systems.

Try putting a humidifier in his room. Mucinex is also good for relieving congestion. i.e post nasal drip. There is a generic form too.

Not sure where you're from but when it's windy, there's a lot of junk in the air. Coughing helps to get that stuff out that doesn't belong. As long as he can sleep, I wouldn't give him a suppressant. You could give him a spoonful of honey to coat his throat (natural). If he starts coughing up gunk that is colored green or yellow, he should go to the dr.

I use homeopathic remedies that work (Lithy Tree - 25 drops). But also, one time saw Deepak Chopra on tv talk about what he does for coughs, and I now do that too. I give the kids a teaspoon of honey with some tumeric on it. I do not measure the tumeric, maybe 1/4 of a teaspoon. Then I follow it with water if they need it. Make sure they do not breath in when eat it, since the powder will fly to the back of their throat (my son threw up the first time because of the powder going back first). Now they love it. Tumeric is so healthy.

Good luck

Those coughs are usually from post-nasal drip which is why the cough suppressants don't work. We give our kids therapeutic dosages of vitamin A for a week and support the liver (which is the organ involved with allergies) with milk thistle and they are usually asymptomatic in 4 days.

Our air here in Southern Cal hasn't really become winter. We were at Disney yesterday and it was WELL into the high 80's.

Doesn't sound like whooping cough either.

More likely liver overload (allergies) from the Santa Ana winds.

My son's been coughing the last week also - he's 10. He's fine otherwise. I think the weather is causing his sinuses to drip and make him cough. I've been having him use saline spray everyday to help. You can have your son do this and also keep his room cool with a cool air humidifier. This hot dry weather we've been having dries you out. I took my son to the doctor to check him out and his chest was clear so she recommended lots of liquids and Musinex. If it goes on for more than a week go to the doctor to make sure it's not anything serious. Hope this helps.
