My child is recovering from strep although has developed an excessive cough. I took her to the doctor because she didn't go longer than 30 minutes without coughing. So they just said it's also an allergy thingy to and gave her some meds. Currently she is still coughing heavliy. She has a hard time sleeping but does get little periods of sleep. It really doesn't matter what position she is in; whether she is upright or not she still has bad cough attacks. She is a trooper though. Has anyone ever experienced this as well? How long did the cough last? Any suggestions? I'm still giving her the cough med and allergy med they gave us to take.

What can I do next?

Cheryl is correct. It helps with the coughing. My 3 year old has allergies and I did this the other night and he stopped coughing. I don't put socks on him though because he gets so hot when he's sleeping. Hopefully the allergy medicine will kick in soon and the drainage will stop and so will the coughing. Welcome to Spring time in Texas! :-)

I've heard that if you put Vicks Vapo Rub on your feet and then put on a pair of socks before going to bed, it helps to stop the coughing. Don't know how or why but I've known people to do it and they say it works.

the coughing is crazy! Drives me nuts!

hot tea with honey & lemon will ease the throat. Give the drugs about a week to take effect.....& then consult with the dr again.

I'm still coughing from allergies and it has been over a month. Drives me nuts and I think I cracked a rib at the same time. Hurts like crazy too.

My Dr. suggested gargling at least twice a day with listerine. I don't know how but it does stop some of the coughing, especially at night. I sleep with my head a bit elevated and have stopped taking cough meds at night.

I also use a nasal rinse. Our allergies are crazy, we are on a large wooded lot with cedar elms and we are allergic to them... they are pretty though...

Mine is allergy related and I had been taking Claritin daily. I was told to switch up allergy meds because you get immune to the same one.

Also, local bee pollen or local honey helps with the allergies around here.

Good luck!

My daughter has had coughs like that and the only thing that helped us was steroids... Orapred specifically. She has had 3 extremely bad coughs (after getting RSV last year) to the point she couldn't eat b/c she would cough and gag and then throw up her food. Her pediatrician has given us the Orapred all 3 times. Cough was less within hours, and gone by the end of the 2nd day.

I tried tons of home remedies... the Vix on the feet does seem to help, but only very temporarily and her cough would still last forever. A humidifier also helps.

Hope she feels better soon! I know how miserable it is!

OMG the coughing is awful!!! my oldest has allergies and will do that non stop coughing. It drives me crazy!!! I tried all that honey and tea stuff yeah doesn't really work when they have that extreme cough. This is what works for my daughter (she's 5). Dimetapp cold and cough. My doctor told me to give it to her because it actually has the coughing suppressant in it. My daughter weighs about 45 pounds and she got 2 tps. My 3 year old had to take it too. She weighs about 35 pounds and she got 1 tsp. So I don't know if that helps you know how much to give your child. I think on the bottle it only gives doses for ages 6 and up. So I would give her that and then had her sleep with a humidifier. I would rub vicks on her feet and put socks on while she slept. Then I just kept the meds in her and that really helped. I also bought her some berry flavored cough drops so if she started the coughing I would give her a cough drop to help sooth her throat. Also my daughter had allergy meds too. The doc said it was ok to give her both. So So give all that a try.

Could it possibly be a sinus infection? Is she on anitbiotics?

One thing to do at night when you just can't stop coughing is prop her up on pillows and place a cold wash cloth on her bare chest. The cold will tighten muscles and helps to soothe the cough.

Good Luck.

straight honey or honey with apple vinegar is a good home remedy for coughing.

You can google and find a ton more info.
