Could 11 Month Old Be Ready for 1 Nap a Day?

My 11 month old seems to be transitioning to one nap a day. (She basically refuses to nap before 11am, and will refuse to nap again in the afternoon.) Could she be ready to transition to one nap a day instead of two? When did your children make this switch? Napping has always been an issue for us, so this could also just be a bump in the napping road...

(She sleeps about 11.5 - 12 hours at night, and usually takes two short naps a day 30 min-45 min each.)

What can I do next?

I think that it depends how much she is sleeping at night. Ask your pediatrician wht is the right number of hours in a day and try to get that in total. It is possible she is making up for it at night or by taking one long nap. Also consider if giving up this nap is making her fussy later in the day or hard to put to bed. The more rest she gets during the day the better she will sleep at night. Use these factors to make your decision and not just what other moms are doing.

That being said, my personal opinion based on my daughter who is now 4 years - I think she should have at least 2 naps (around 2 hours each) until she is about 18 months. I suspect that she is just adjusting her nap times or discovering her world a bit more and this distraction is making her resist a nap, so I would suggest keep trying. Get her to sleep earlier or later or add or decrease nap lengths.

It seems to me my daughter would hit these "bumps in the road" and it could usually be resolved with perseverence. My four year old still takes one short afternoon nap which I really value. And I think kids need more sleep than we give them credit. I see lots of kids falling asleep in their strollers or while eating their dinners - I think we push them to keep up with us too much. Just because they can stay awake doesn't mean they should.

my 2 1/2 year old starting on the one nap a day right around 1. She still takes her daily nap and really needs it. My 11 month old is also transitioning and I've just been making her morning nap later and later. She used to go down by 930 and now we are up to about 1030 but she is still falling asleep if we are in the car or out in her car seat later in the afternoon at 5-6 but only for about ten or fifteen minutes. She will not nap if I put her down at 2-3, I don't really want her to sleep much later than that so she will go to bed by 730-8. She sleeps right through the night until 7 the next morning. I do notice a difference if we get a chance to play outside, she will always sleep longer if we do that. She naps about 2 hours from about 1030-1230. Then we eat lunch and she tag teams the two year old who naps from 130-230 or 3. I won't let her sleep later than that, and I always have to wake her up. Hope it help.

yep, around 11 months is when my son started napping from 11-2, or 3 if he's really tired. it used to be 10-12 and then 3-4:30. it's kinda hard because he gets tired around 5:30 and it's too late for a nap then. most of the time he's fine until bedtime. but sometimes, it can be a rough dinner time. ;)

At daycare, they switched them to 1 nap at approximately 1 year, so yes. It is around that time.

That's around the same time my daughter switched to one nap. My son on the other hand didn't cut his naps down to one until he was 15 months. So every child in different.
If she is fighting the two naps, I would just give her one nap. My children usually go down for their nap at 1:00 right after lunch. And that always seemed to work well for us.
Good luck

Like everything else this seems to be individual needs. My first son made the switch around 13 months so it would certainly seem possible that there be a few months on eigher side of a year that is a transition for different children.

That's about the same age when my daughter started taking just 1 nap a day. It might have been earlier than that.

Sounds normal to me.
