Could He Be Teething?

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I know there is something realy irritating my baby. He's 11 wks old and my mom seems to think he might be teething. He has had diarrea for the past couple weeks and he is always fussing and squirming like he is in pain. He now has a diaper rash. I took him to the doctor last night and the only doctor available didn't seem to know much and I left without my questions being answered. A lot of times he is not satisfied with his pacifier or bottle. If he is teething what do I look for- he doesn't realy let me look in his mouth, and I don't see much of what little I can see. Another concern that I have is that he is gaining weight at an incredibly fast pace. he has recently gained 11 ounces in less than a week. People have told me that it is just a growth spurt, but it has not let up for two months now he has been gaining like this. He is only 11 wks and already weighs 14 lbs. 12 ouncees. Any words of wisdom on these matters would be appreciated! Thanks..

What can I do next?

I doubt he is teething. He is too young for that. If the doctor that you saw didn't give you any information/solutions I would change doctors asap. He could have colic, he could have food/formula allergies... all which are normal and can be fixed.

My daughter seemed to get diaper rash a lot more easily when she was teething--it seems like the little immune system gets overwhelmed with all the stuff going on at once in their bodies and makes them more susceptible. If he is teething, what worked really well for us was Hyland's teething tablets. We didn't need to use anything else for my daughter's teething besides those, and they're all natural, so we felt good about giving them to her. As far as the weight goes, my daughter has always been heavy for her age, but she was born big. We just made sure that we were giving her good stuff ( I nursed exclusively until she was four months old, and then added solids in gradually), and let her eat 'til she was full. It seems a little too young to worry about weight, but check with your doctor once you get in to see someone you trust. Good luck!

As young as he is, I would suggest checking for thrush. It's a yeast infection of the mouth, and makes the baby's mouth tender, which can mimic teething.

It could be teething but our pediatrician said that teething does not cause them to have diarrea. If he has had diarrea that long I would definately take him back in and make sure you get some answers. I recently had a similar problem with a ped I was taking my daughter too and ended up finding her a new doctor because I was not getting any answers from the one we were seeing. Good luck.

Is he chewing on anything he possibly can? I know at 11 weeks he probably still has problems getting things to his own mouth, but if he's trying like crazy, then it may be teething. If it is teething, if you offer your finger up for chewing on, they'll usually go for it quite happily, letting you feel his gums for any lumps or sharp spots.

It can be difficult to tell when a tiny infant is having diarrhea, as normal baby poo is so watery and runny anyway. But, the fact that it's giving him a rash is a great indicator. My kids have had diaper rash bad enough that they needed tylenol to sleep because it hurt so bad. Find a diaper rash cream that has zinc oxcide in it... that means it'll be white. The thicker the stuff the better. Get his bum really clean by soaking in water with some baking soda. Rubbing will only make it hurt more. Then once it's good and clean, slather the cream on really thick. When you change his diaper, wipe off the ick but leave a layer of the cream on, then add more to it before putting the new diaper on. It'll help clear up the rash and make him more comfortable.

I'd also recommend going back in on Monday when you can see your regular doctor that you trust. If you need to see someone sooner, I recommend the After Hours Pediatrics clinic on 143rd and Metcalf. They have Saturday and Sunday hours, as well as evening hours. It's walk in only, but they have two good pediatricians on staff and they're great with kids. They may know more than the doc you saw last night.

11 weeks is really young for teething, but not unheard of. It's more than likely something else. It might be reflux or an allergy to something you eat (if he's breastfed) or his formula (if he's formula fed). I think you should go back to the doctor and if you still leave without an answer, you need to find a new pediatrician.

A friend of mine has a daughter and she has silent reflux. She never really spit up, she was always hungry, but her stomach always seemed to be upset. She was gaining weight at an incredible pace, and is much larger than the "average" baby for her age. She was eating to soothe herself because of the reflux.

I hope you find out what's wrong soon. Good luck!

Try letting him suck on a cold washrag or buy a teething ring you can put in the refrigerator and see if that eases his discomfort.

I know how it feels to have a sick baby and the doctor is no help. I told him that I knew something was wrong with my child and I wanted tests done. (They will do them.)Ask for a blood test and a fecal test...yes sounds icky and it is but I did it and they found out what was wrong with my child and we got some antibiotics and it cleared up. My child suffered needlessly for weeks because the doctor thought I was being a worried new mom. Diarrea can deplete the body of nutrients and dehydrate them. so i`m surprised that the doctor has let him go for so long without doing those tests. no one knows you child better than you. so if you think there is a problem dont leave until you get an answer. or find another doctor that will give you answers.

My advice would be to get a second opinion. Take your baby to see a different doctor or a pediatrician. I don't think it is normal for babies to have diarrhea for that long. With a baby that young, you should definately find out what the trouble is very soon.
Good Luck and I hope your baby is feeling better soon.

I would have him checked for reflux. My son had it and he was miserable for a few months. His pediatrician blew me off too and then he ended up in the ER with pneumonia because he was aspirating into his lungs along with the reflux. If your doctor doesn't want to help you I would definitely find a new one!! My son was born at 28 weeks so there were other things that caused his problems but there are things they can do and medications they can give to relieve the discomfort if it is reflux.

The only other thing I can think of is cholic, but that typically happens right at birth. My daughter had acid reflux and would be balled up in pain. We gave her Gripe Water that is sold at Babies R Us and it instantly helped. It is like an herbal version of Zantac for the relief of Cholic. Of course one shouldn't give children remedies w/out doctors approval. My daughter eventually got on Zantac and was totally cured. It was months of sleepless nights and a lot of needless pain for my daughter. I had to figure it out on my own though, my pediatrician didn't want to help. Kuddos to you for going the extra mile! Best of luck.

I wouldn't imagine that he's teething at 11 weeks but I could be wrong.

Is he breastfed? If so, are you eating anything different that normal? They say to not eat spicy foods or dairy. If he's formula fed, maybe try changing his formula. My daughter was (and still is) lactose intolerant. Soy saved our lives.

Have you tried any Gripe Water or Tylenol?

Maybe call his pediatrician and see if he could be tested for RotaVirus (you may have to save a dirty diaper as it can only be tested through a stool sample). It's just a stomach virus that they get (we get it too but it usually goes away in a day or two as opposed to kiddos where it can last for a few weeks). My daughter has had it a few times and it has always started with diarrhea for more than a week.

This is all I can really think of right now. Let us know how it goes!
