Please help me, it's 3:30 am and i am still up monitoring my son's breathing!
My son is a healthy and happy toddler. Since last week I hear some gurgling noises when he breathes during the night and sometimes he coughes a little. During the day he coughes and sometimes vomitts. I mentioned this to his doctor who assured me that this is a simple cold, and my husband said the same. But isn't a simple cold cured within 2-3 days? I have allergies and i am afraid he does too..
when i asked his doctor for medication for the phlegm she said it is not neccessary, but my baby is waking up evey two-three hours crying so please if anyone knows of a remedy for phlegm please help me, Doctors have disappointed me so far!
Also if you have experience with kids with allergies, please tell me what to look for? are there any signs..
Thanks

So What Happened?

Thanks to all of you. I did indeed take him to another doctor today and she was kind enough to see us. She said that he seems to have allergies but he also have a cold. we'll wait for a couple of days then we'll do some tests to know what triggers his allergies.
I noticed the black rings under his eyes as well as the wheezing. We did try the shower trick and I am rubbing some vicks on his chest. We bought a vaporizor so hopefully tomorrow morning he'll feel better.
Thanks to all of you for your help

I have been where you are. My newborn was born with severe allergies, so I know all about it. You need to get a humidifier and put it in his room close to his bed to keep the air moist and help his breathing. You can also give him over the counter robitussim for adults and children, the dose is 1/4 tsp. Vicks vapor rub for kids is an awesome product as well. They also make a vicks baby wash that will fill the bathroom with the vapors when he is bathing. Hopefully this cold will pass soon. If he is still coughing after about two week I would take him back to the doctor.

Try mucinex, or suggest to your DR asthma...My nephew has the same thing where her vomits. They put him on Singular and it has made a world of difference. I would try the Mucinex first :) Then if things do not get better after 5 days call your DR. Also check the color of the phlegm. Good Luck :)

When my son gets sick, his colds can last up to 2 weeks. They say that when they are little that they can stack colds. The last time he got sick, he ended up with a cold on top of a cold and an ear infection. They gave him antibiotics for his ear infection, but that didn't help his gurggling lungs very quickly. So from his previous cold which was not as severe I had gotten him one of those Little Vapors night lights. It's like putting the montholatum you would put on an older childs chest, straight into the air. This helped him ALOT. He was not as weezy or congeted when he would get up in the mornings.

These things are from Vicks, and I think there is another brand aswell, but they are called Gentle Vapors. You have to keep replacing the vapor cartridge every night, but I felt like it was completely worth it!

I hope this has helped you some!!

Hello.. My son had severe allergies when he was little, even rented a breathing machine several times. When he was 18 months old we started shopping from a health and wellness company and I completely changed my home over to their products and also gave him their children's vitamins. We have seen a huge difference in his immune system and he's very rarely sick anymore.

I know that this is coming a little late, but I am new to this site. My son has allergies like you would not beleive. Everytime the wind changes he gets dark circles under his eyes and a runny nose. Our Pedi put him on Zyrtec daily. Since then the syptoms are still there, but not as bad. We have had to do breathing treatments and everything. I keep benadryl, and tylonol cold on hand. Just keep a watch out and document everything for when you go to the pedi next. I know the frustration that comes from dealing with doctors that think you are overreacting. I hope he gets to feeling better.

As someone who has very severe allergies and is dealing with a 4 year with horrible allergies just look for constant runny noses, wheezing, & coughing. You need to watch him and see if it gets worse outside or better and vice versa to indoor as well. I am very allergic to trees so my symptoms get worse outside and my 4 year stepson is allergic to dogs and his gets worse inside. (when the dog has been inside) And watch him around animals especially dogs and cats. And I had to make my Dr give both of us a allergy test instead of just prescribing medication. It has been beneficial for both of us. If it is allergies the symptoms will definately get worse when he is around whatever it is that he is allergic to. Hope this helps. And remember they have less evasive allergy testing now days.

When my daughter was very newborn.. she had a mild cold.. and well, the doctor was so good, that she noticed in fact her simple cold could be that she was allergic.. (she did develop ezcema).. well, she prescribed a neubulizer machine.. which made my daughter feel better within a minutes.. Although I only used it a couple of times during her fist year.. I think it was the key to helping her right away. It helped her get over her sickness without too much medication. It opened up her lungs so that she can cough whatever was bothering her..
It sounds like your baby might benefit from something like this to help him open up whatever is bothering him, which is provably what is making him vomit too..
It is important to help them as much as we can without too much medication. But this neubulizer was a life saver for my baby.. perhaps this is what your child needs? Because as I remember it.. I didn't even notice that my baby had a cold.. but the doctor noticed her lungs making a weezing noise.. and so that is how she knew...
Follow your instinct, you know how it feels to have allergies, and well you are the mother, you know!
Sometimes we rely on doctors to tell us what our child has, but in fact sometimes we know before hand.. we know something is wrong. I would suggest you take her to the ER now. You can try waiting to take her to the doctor, and then have him prescribe the neubulizer.. but the ER can use their neubulizer machines right away to make him feel better.. and then you can hear and imidiate second opinion from a different doctor without hurting the one that is your pediatritian now..
If could be that your doctor now is wanting to wait it out to see if in fact it is a cold.. but if you are an allergy sufferer, most likely your child inherited that gene from you. But there is always a possibility that this is just a cold hard to get over, and well, we are all different so it's hard to say.. but I would take him to the ER just beause if it's that bad that you can't sleep.. you might as well take him, and feel better that you are getting a second opinion right away. I would not call you ped until you have already seen the er doctor.. just because they might call your pediatian in, and well, then your second opinion might be influenced by his opinion. Just a suggestion..

Good luck.. let me know how it goes.. HOpe your baby feels better soon.

I have been down the same road. Dont' walk,,,run to another pediatrian for a second opinon. I did and it changed everything.

Mine had frequent ear/sinus infections. When he was 9 months old he was not crawling, pulling up, etc. and I knew there was something off. I took him in for a second opinion after a week of sleepless night, 1 night of violent crying in pain, and all week of sporadic eating and throwing up. My regular ped had told me it was a virus and sent me home.

The other ped told me the kid had ears so full of puss and infection that it was a wonder he was as happy as he was. He put him on some pink liquid- RYNATAN- for congestion. It was just a basic decongestant. He also gave us antibiotics, a shot of something Re or Ro drug. It was a name that started with those letters. It was a strong antibiotic and cost me $50 bucks alone. He also gave me specific directions for feed, sleep, etc.
Within a week my child was eating, sleeping, and playing better. Within a month he was crawling, back to weight gain (he was a little chubby so that was not a major concern), and normal growth milestones.

For the first 3 years he continued to have infections and the only drug that seemed to knock them out was Augmentin. My other tip is to learn your drugs, what they do, best way to dose and chart your health care yourself. You don't want to become dependent on drugs, but you should at least know what you are dealing with and have a dr that will be more knowledable.

I am not saying that is going to be what happens to you, but I am saying that not all dr's know everything. We are our own best advocates. Asking questions and getting other opinions is often a big difference in our experiences.

Good luck,
ts

i get disappointed by doctors too sometimes, i really do like to think i know more! My son has the same problem and I think a cold can take a while to go away..even a week or so. If he is really rattling in his chest and can't get rid of that phlem then your doctor should prescribe him something safe to help break it up and clear out. As horrible as it is for us to watch, the vommiting is actually probably helping him to get rid of it too. Hang in there, he will get better. I know that helpless feeling we all feel when our babies are sick. You may want to get a second opinion too!

It might be allergies....both my kids have them...my daughter has it more...I asked her doctor to give her an allergies test...they draw several viles of blood to test it for allergies...of all things my daughter was allergic to was COW'S MILK...how can that be, but its true...I started looking at her very closely and monitoring her even more and she does get congested and runny nose and cough and watery eyes when she drinks cow's milk....oh she also takes Singular at bed time to help her sleep....for the phlegm...the neubalizer helps her alot...sometimes she can't even breath..its supposed to "unstick" the phlegm which is on the lungs outer wall, or something like that...I don't know really how it works....but a couple of nights of the neubalizer and my daughter throws up but just once or twice and its all phlegm...maybe that might help....I hope this helps you...if you have any other questions that I might be able to help being that both my kids have allergies...just send me a message..

My two girls and step-daughter also have allergies. I knew my oldest daughter had allergies the day I brought her home from the hospital. She started sneezing but also she had these white boogers in her nose and they were really sticky. Her knows was always full of boogers or runny. She also has a sensitive gag reflex as well as her step-sister. When they would get a cold, they would always end up vomitting because of it. The phlem hangs down in their throats setting off that lovely gag reflex and they would vomit. I do not know of any cures for phlem except do not let them drink milk because it coats the phlem, making it thicker and causing them to vomit. Which vomitting milk is gross all by itself. Do not give him a cough suppressant because it is important that he get that stuff out of his chest, unless his coughs become unproductive. Then make sure you give him something with expectorant in it. It will help break up the stuff in his chest. It sounds like it is already broken up. He just needs to cough it up. All you can do with a cold or even a flu is let it run its course and treat necessary symptoms. Have you discussed your concerns with the doctor? I had a few doctors who did not believe that babies could be born with allergies. They felt that it was something that developed as they got older, but I knew different and found a pediatrician who took one look at my girls and knew they had allergies. Constant dark circles under their eyes is another strong clue. You could take your child to an allergy specialist to be tested. Then you would, not only know if your child has allergies, but also what your child is allergic to. I hope this helps.

H., get a second opinion. My 16 month old had allergies the day she was born. On her 1st birthday her doctor put her on allergy medicine. I could competly tell the difference. He said that most pediatricians hate to give babies allergy medicine. But he said she needed it because she was still sick when the pollen count was almost non-existent. Wait until the pollen count has gone down and then see. If he is still coughing and gagging then go see another doctor. hope this helps

Colds can last for weeks, but my girls' problems are usually allergy induced. When my daughters get all stuffed up with phlegm, that icky thick kind that rattles their chests, I stand in the shower holding them and let the water run just as hot as possible. We stand back far enough not to get water on us, but the steam is enough to break up the rattling in their chests and noses. Saline drops in their noses with a bulb syringe gets out any remaining yuckies. I have a cool mist humidifier in their room at night also.

Allergies usually cause sneezing in my girls. Their eyes water and get red around the lids. Their noses start running clear and thin at first, then thick and dark. At the first signs, I give them Claritin or Benadryl. My girls usually have severe allergies so they have been put on breathing treatments and prescriptions, but I use them as a last resort. I also keep them on juice and give them plenty of water to keep them hydrated.

I hope your little one is feeling better soon!!!! Good luck!

The doctor didn't even prescribe an expectorant to loosen the phlegm? Both my sons had asthma real young, then grew out of it. My youngest was prescribed a prescription anti-histamine/decongestant for babies and an over the counter expectorant to help loosen phlegm. He was also prescribed a nebulizer, then an inhaler later on.
I'd take him to another doctor. This one doesn't seem to care much, only until your little one ends up in the emergency room and another doc will tell you different.

Try a cool mist humidifier in his room on all the time. Keep the door closed and do not let any pets you have in his room at all. If this continues, get a second opinion. Perhaps your husband could find some recommendations.

Good luck and keep us posted,

Your husband can't help? Isn't that his field? Well...my son had sleep apnea and allergies. We just recently had his tonsils and adnoids removed. He is doing AWESOME. I recommend Dr. Khoa Tran he's a Ear Nose and Throat specialist.

Good luck,
