My 15 month old has a rash in the area immeidate around his anus. It's no where else on his bum. Could it be diaper rash? It's very red, but it doesn't seem to bother him. I've been putting Desitin on it for the past 2 days and it looks no better. Any ideas as to what else it might be?
Update: IThe rash itself seems to be a little better, but I noticed that it looks like he has a couple of "whiteheads" in the area as well. My son has also been on Zyrtec for the last 6 months for what we believe is a dust allergy. I wonder if the two could be connected. Our pediatrician will not allergy test for another 3 months so I guess we'll just have to wait it out for now.

This happened to our daughter a few times due to yeast. We use Lotrimin followed by a diaper cream. Clears it right up!
Sounds like it could be yeast, get some monistat and use it like the Desitan.
sounds like reaction to food....ie dairy
desitin may relieve pain but not help it go away...time will...and figure out if a food triggers this
Teething can cause redness and acidic BM's that burn...and the only thing that works for my daughter is this ointment called Dr. Smiths..its awesome stuff....you can find it at Walmart but its not in the baby area but over by the health and beauty section where they have some baby items....
Sounds like rash to me. Try Butt Paste..that worked wonders for us.
does the baby drink milk ? we had same prob turned out to be milk allergy,put my son on soy and havnt had prob sence,well at christmas time when he has to much choc.my dr also said it was ok to make your osn cream we mixed euracin,butt paste, and hydracortazone cream (sorry for miss spell) the euracin is water proof so made it stay on when wet.
Excess yeast? That can happen due to dietary changes in the intestine or an imbalance of good bacteria in the colon and rectum. It could be aggravated by diaper wipes and just staying wet in there. But I know pediatricians don't recommend baby powder as it increases the chance of yeast. Maybe let him air-dry as much as possible or use a hairdryer on 'cool' after you change him - as long as the noise doesn't bother him. Ask the pediatrician or the pharmacist if you can use an over-the-counter, topical anti-fungal cream in that area on a child of his age. It's probably okay for a few days since it's external.
It could be a yeast infection. What makes me think that is that the Desitin isn't helping. Have him checked out by your pediatrician and they can prescribe or recommend an antifungal if needed. My youngest is a little over 2 and has had a couple.
