my poor son (toddler) has been dealing with sinus issue breathing problems for 2 yrs. he has tubes in and adenoids out. been to drs. many many times posted on here many many times about all his issues. he currently has had a "sinus infection" for over a month. how I DONT KNOW! however he just got scratched by our 1 cat we have 2. they were playing. 15mins later his hand is swollen somewhat and theres hives all over it. I did give him allergy med. afterwords. my point is...do you think all his problems this whole time is coming from our cats? what kind of allergy tests to do they on toddlers? i dont see how you can be sick so much out of the yr. hes been this way since sept. but nothing since this past may?

My son (2 yrs old) just had allergy tests done. They took 2 containers of blood and were able to test for 50 common allergies. Animals being one of them. I would definitely do it.

Cats have a high dander allergen and regardless of how clean you may be about them, their dander, hair, saliva, urine, feces collects through the home, air and environment. This will also bring on full blown allergy symptoms. Even more so if your cats are outside cats instead of house cats. The slightest of anything feline, will affect your child if he is susceptable to begin with and will be made worse, by the elements outside of the home. Toddler allergy tests are the same as adults, so it won't be much fun. Talk to your pediatrician. He will know best. I hate to say this, but, be prepared to get rid of the cats and do a deep cleaning of your home and all that the cats have come in contact with.

I am terribly allergic to cats. Sneezing, congestion, sinus pain, asthma etc.. from just being in a house that has one for a few minutes. If I was to get a scratch from a cat I would react the same way. Hives, swelling, itching, redness. Absolute misery.
Even if you get rid of the cat. The dander is everywhere in your house, especially if you have carpets and fabric furniture.
I know how miserable I feel around cats. If he is allergic he is miserable too.

I am allergic to cats. My Mom has one, and if it scratches me (which sometimes she does by mistake when she's trying to get her enormous cat bottom in my lap) I will surely get hives.
My nephew had excema and asthma. When he was 4 they finally had the allergy testing done and tada- he was allergic to the dog. They had to find a new home for him, but his symptoms improved greatly.

Well I'll say this...cat scratches and bites are nasty and can easy make anyone swell up or get infected...BUT, that info combined with the other symptoms...I think you might be onto something!

Yep, sure sounds like he could be allergic to the cats, and it looks to me like your cat just have him his own personal allergy scratch test.
I personally get hives from a cat scratch and, even if they are just in the room, I have terrible nasal allergies and sometimes even asthma. So this sounds completely reasonable to me.
A question - if you go on vacation for a week and are out of your house, do his symptoms improve when you are away from the cats?

THEREFORE, my parents NEVER EVER, got cats as pets when I was growing up.
Asthma... is deadly. Asthma attacks can come on very suddenly WITHOUT warning.
AND it can cause a host of lung problems and allergy problems, in those afflicted with cat allergies.
Cat dander and shed fur, ACCUMULATES overtime, until the environment and air in the home, is saturated, with the allergens.

I think you need to find a new ped. Yes it could be allergies and it could be your cat. But toddlers don't usually get a sinus infection. A child's sinuses are not fully open until age 20. So sinus infection in children is highly unlikely. However that being said it is possible. But should be cultured and confirmed. And if he is having a true sinus infection he needs to see a specialist. Now he could have allergies and he could be allergic to your cat but you also need to remember it could be something else and not the cat. A cat scratch cannot tell you if a child or anyone is allergic as anyone who is scratched by a cat will develop a hive like welt and often people will break out in more hives surrounding the welt. So your son had a typical reaction to a cat scratch. Again that can't rule out if he is allergic or not, he may be. I think if your ped is letting your child suffer with things without finding a cause you need to find a new ped. You should also be seeing a specialist for sinus issues and a ped allergist for testing. I would honestly never have done the tubes and adenoids removal without having seen an allergist first. Sometimes those issues can be taken care of non-surgically with simple removal of the allergens. Either way your little boy needs some relief, so keep seeking until you find the cause. Good luck!
I think it would at least be worth checking into. Hopefully, the answer will be that yes, he IS allergic to the cats and you'll have the answer to what's been going on for so long. Good luck!
Because he got the hives from a cat scratch I suggest that it is more likely that he is allergic to something on the cats claws/foot.
It is possible that he's allergic to cat dander which could show up in respiratory illness but having hives from a cat scratch is more likely because of what is on the cats nails. I suggest that you make an appointment for allergy testing. He could be allergic to numerous things which could be causing nasal congestion.
Very possible he is allergic. Definitely worth having him tested. Has a doctor ever asked about pets in the home.
