Could Vomitting in Six Month Old Be Reflux?

Hi all,
About two weeks ago, my six month old began vomitting. That was his first ever vomit and he barely even spit up before then. At first I chalked it up to his not feeling well (he had been given four vaccinations two days earlier and was very cranky and feverish) and that my daughter may have had a stomach virus and passed it on to him (the same day she vomitted three times but was fine before and after). Since that day he has vomitted once a day with the exception of two days where he was vomit free. He was pretty miserable for the first week after his vaccinations, but since last Thursday he has been back to his normal cheerful self, but he still throws up! Sometimes he vomits after he has been crying and it seems like he gets all worked up and then throws up, but other times he coughs a couple times, then kind of gets a hacking cough and then throws up, and other times he'll just be sitting there, happy as a clam and then suddenly spits up. A little back history on my son -- he's had this gurgle in his throat and has been coughing off and on since January. The doctor said he doesn't have any fluid in his lungs and it could be a little post nasal drip. I also wonder if he's salivating a lot due to teething and perhaps swallowing the saliva instead of allowing it to drool out of his mouth. Yesterday morning he had a runny nose that lasted about an hour and a half but since then he's been fine. Maybe it's allergies? Or could it be reflux? Any ideas? Thanks!

My son 16 mo old had reflux from day one. As he got older he started doing the cough & vomit thing. Found out thru a ped. pulmonologist that he also has respiratory stress disease. It starts as a dryish cough then he gags & throws up. But he's fine & happy after. He snored & was wheezy sounding. Also found out thru an allergy test that he's allergic to milk. Ugh!! I wonder if a child can develop the reflux at 6 mo? Maybe keep track of what he eats & see if its linked right before the throw up. I know the season change also causes the itchy throat which may be causing the coughing & eventual vomit.

Hi C.,
It sounds like it could be an allergy related to food. Since there were a couple days where he did not throw up, you might think back to what he ate, or more importantly, didn't eat on those days. Maybe the crying is because whatever is causing the problem is upsetting his stomach/digestive system. I would talk to your child's doctor and begin documenting the foods he's eating and keep a close watch for a reaction.

Good luck!

MOm,

sounds like a food allergy or sensitivity to me,

This happened to my son with eggs,

and now at 3 years old he can eat eggs fine.

use your powers of deduction, it could be lactose,

My girlfriends son is about 7 months and is on reflux medication. But he has a severe milk protein allergy, and it seems to be connected.
It sounds like your experience happened just after his vaccinations. I had a similar experience with my daughter, and after months and months of a runny nose/cough, a few rounds of antibiotics (that did nothing) I became very frustrated w/ the pediatricians.
I have since started seeing a homeopath in Morristown, NJ. My entire family has benefited from the combination of homoepathic remedies and traditional medicine.
It has been the only thing to clear up my daughter's cough, once dubbed allergies, then asthma, I had her on a nebulizer 3 times per day, with no avail!
I used it during my pregnancy and with my second daughter too. You can do it yourself at home, with remedy kits for kids, but without the guidance of a professional, I would be weary.
Amy Rosen is at The Remedy Center in Morristown, and she changed our lives!

it could be anything...get it checked out though and do not settle for one doctor. This will take some time but you really should look into this matter.

Hi C.,
My son is 9 months and has just started experiencing the same symptoms. He has acid relux since he was four months. He was on zantac and they recently swiched him to prevacid. He seems to only vomit at night when we are trying to put him down for the night. He coughs from time to time during the day, but we contributed it to the teething. The doctors have also noticed that his weight is up and down where as in the past he was gaining weight nicely. He was a premiee and alot of his symptoms they contribute to that. he has already seen the gastro and the pulmonolgist. He has an appointment with his pediatrician this week. please keep me informed on your sons condition.

Hi, I never respond to these things ... but I've been through such h_ll with my son that I just want to say ... get him checked out. My kid started throwing up spontaneously at 9 months, lost a lot of weight, and got into very bad shape. It turns out that he's allergic, probably to dairy, but all the vomiting really messed up his stomache, and we've been on a 2-month program of just getting it to heal through an eliminated diet. Sometimes babies throw up to get mucus out of their system / when they have a cold, but if this is chronic for you, I would definitely consider food allergies. My ped thought my son had a virus, but we got a second opinion and then were told to go to a pediatric gastroenterologist. Maybe mine is a worse-case scenario, but I'd just pay attention .... (my kid has reflux, too, but you don't typically throw up from that).

So ... talk to your doctor, but definitely start a food log. My kid would typically throw up about 12 hours after eating the problem food. And start maybe cutting the typical allergens -- dairy first, then eggs, then fish -- see if there's a difference. I wish I hadn't waited so long because my son really ended up suffering.

This is allergy season, and post nasal drip often bcomes more of an issue. You may not see anything happening, since the mucus drips from his nose, down into his throat and is swallowed. This will often cause vomiting in a non-sick child. If the vomitus is mostly mucus, this is probably the situation. You might want to talk with his doctor about trying a decongestant--I'm not sure what is best. Good luck.

I am a Grandma of a six month old baby boy. I just came from bringing him to the doctors yesterday because he was due for his 6 months vaccinations. While I was there, the doc asked me if I had any concerns about him and I brought up that he vomits a lot. He told me that it could be reflux, but he would grow out of it and also he wasn't concerned because my grandson is still growing very well and gaining weight as he should. So, he told me he wasn't going to give me meds for it. So, I guess...it is possible.

Hi C.,
Although your baby could have reflux, what you described sounds more like allergies/post nasal drip.
Reflux is often painful and he would be fussy and uncomfortable and usually it is either repetitive spitting or pyloric stenosis causes projectile vomiting ususally found in young infants and corrected with surgery.
So I would suggest that you note how often and what type of spitting and write it down. Then you will have some concrete information for you Dr. and I would watch over 1-2 weeks before going in unless your child is showing symptoms of being sick or in pain.

How is your milk supply? My son used to spit up all of the time... then I would have to nurse him again... I was a cow! Anyway, I realized/found out much later that my milk came down too fast and hence he drank too fast. Lots of air in his belly.
If that is the case, nurse on your back or pump a little before he nurses.
He has 'excellent' gag reflexes to this day at 14 :).
Good Luck, J.

Its sounds like an allergy then reflux. Is he on any solid foods yet?? I would go back to the doctor and see, if he was doing that after shots I would check into that. Since that is all related to each other. My 7 month old did that in the begining of her life and it was the formula. No problems since then. Take care and good luck. Alison

sometimes it is best to get second opinion. because when i had my twins were babies(now they r 8) they had alot wheexing and gruggle in their throat. the doctor at that time they were seeing, told me that it was nothing. than he told me it was cold. i sent them to another doctor and she told me that they had asthma and one of them had nasal drip.

It sounds like allergies/sensitivies. Have you started a new food in January? Does he have dark circles under his eyes (allergy shiners)? If it's food sensitivies, I would eliminate dairy or wheat to see if that helps. Usually dairy/wheat causes a lot of congestion - which could then lead to ear infections, etc....... Just a thought. Good luck! I hope he feels much better soon!

C.,

Ask your Doctor to check his Pyloric valve. Something similar happened to the son of a friend and it was his Pyloric valve that was the issue.

You know when something is wrong with your child so keep pressing until you are comfortable with the resolution.

Good Luck!

When my son was 6 months old he got a terrible stomach virus. He usually eats regular old similac but because he was having so much diarrhea the Dr. suggested soy formula until he got over it. My son was also vomitting frequently and, like your son, never really spit up or vomitted before. The doctor said that because his esophagus is so small and irratated from the virus that vomitting might occur long after the other sysmptoms were gone. He suggested as long as 3 weeks. If you're really concerned contact his Dr. but if he wasn't diagnosised with reflux early on it's most likely NOT that.

Good luck!
