Cow's Milk & Constipation

My DD just turned 1 and we started her on Whole Cow's Milk. I did a slow change using part formula and part milk. Even doing this- She was on it just a few days when she became really constipated. She was crying and in a lot of pain. I took her off of it immediately and am now giving her toddler formula which is crazy expensive. I wouldn't worry too much about supplementing her diet with any kind of milk except that recently she hasn't had much of an appetite for solid food so she is eating less. I hear this is normal when they hit milestones and she just started walking. My dr. says her bloodtests came back perfect and no vitamins are needed but that was before she got off her infant formula. Has anyone else had a problem with cow's milk with their toddler and constipation and what did you do instead? Thanks so much everyone!!

What can I do next?

We did a slow transition - about an oz at a time for about 3 days until the bottle was eventually all cows milk. I definitely noticed a difference in his poops, but he wasn't constipated...it was just more solid. We make sure that he eats fruits, that usually helps even things out a bit.

My daughter has never been able to tolerate cow's milk--dairy constipates her sooo bad. She can have the occasional cheese slice, but thats it. We give her a daily probiotic and she only drinks soy, almond, or coconut milk. She gets her nutrients from food and she also takes a daily multivitamin and vitamin D. She is very healthy =) Trust me you don't want constipation issues, omit the cow's milk now! I don't want to scare you, but we have been to gastro ped's, did miralax for over a year, been to the ER many times when she hadn't gone for a week and was running a 105 fever. You said it yourself, she doesn't need the cow's milk. She needs a balanced diet with plenty of fiber and veggies, maybe a multivitamin with calcium and a vitamin D supplement and probiotic. Every morning my daughter takes the gummy vitamin, orange flavored chewable probiotic, and a liquid vitamin D supplement. Never given us any problems with it--they all taste good. She gets the almond milk, mostly because she loves it, one glass a day. (it is more expensive) Lots of people are lactose intolerant and they do just fine, so will your daughter. She will stay hydrated with water or watered-down juice. Best!

Did you just switch all at O. time?

Maybe do half formula/half cows milk for a week an increase the milk until it's full strength?

try giving her more easily digested dairy products, like yogurt

Milk isn't really that healthy for little ones - when my daughter was slow to grow the doctor asked us all sorts of dietary questions, the first being "does she drink milk?" I replied, "not really," and the doctor said it was good because drinking too much milk is one of the biggest causes of poor growth and anemia in kids. If your child has a reasonably well-rounded diet there's no reason for her to continue drinking formula.

You could try taking her off cows milk and giving her soy milk to see if constipation goes away
