There is nothing you can really do. He does not feel well.
Give it a few more days. Just comfort him when he needs it.
Hi Moms,
My 22 month old little boy was recently diagnosed w/ coxsockievirus. It has been pretty difficult these past couple of days, to say the least. I don't know what to do anymore to keep him comfortable at nights, the times when he seems to be most uncomfortable. He wakes up crying and nothing I do seems to comfort him. Any ideas or advice anyone who has gone through this can give me would be great. Thanks.
Thank you to all who responded and offered suggestions. Unfortunately, I took my son back to the pediatrician today after having discharge from both ears all through the night. The virus gave him a double ear infection!!! This has been some week for us. I can't imagine all this happening because of daycare. If I didn't mention it before, he started daycare last week and has been sick this entire week. I hope this is the end of it. But thanks again to all moms.

Hi J.
This rather lengthy web site should be how to care and treatment for coxsackievirus
http://organizedwisdom.com/helpbar/index.html?return=http...
All 3 of my kids had it (my hubby and i did too, it's extrememly contagious) and my pediatrician recommended the following to help the throat feel better:
For kids under 5 mix one ounce maalox with one ounce benedryl. Have the child swish/gargel/swallow, if that is possible for your 22 month old. Otherwise just swallowing will probably be ok.
Also, Dimetapp makes a sore throat lolipop. I never used it but the doctor recommended it.
Obviously you will want to check with the doc before giving medication but you may want to ask them about the above items.
Good luck!
Tylenol. Fluids. I seriously think I held my son constantly when he had this virus it was the only way he would be calm. : (
Wash your hands often!!! I got it last year from my daughter and thought I was going to die - high fever, blisters on my hands, feet and in my mouth. It took her a few days to get over it (motrin and any liquids he will take - which can be hard with mouth blisters so watch for dehydration). But do your best not to catch it - it really sucks. Good luck!!
Hi,
all I know is my empoyment (at a children's) hospital is dependent
my receiving both flu vacs. I am pregnant w/ my 3rd. Drs
as a rule are super cautious about exposing fetuses/mom to drugs- this is no different.
The best thing to do is talk to your dr @ your concerns. She is your greatest ally.
Motrin and popsickles are the only things that worked for me.
Unfortunately, everyone is right the best advise is to give lots of fluids and tylenol to reduce fever and discomfort. I slept in the recliner with my kids for over a week as it went from one to the other.
Another unfortunate note is that it is very common for parents to get the virus: you will have flu like symtoms, maybe fever and sore throat. Check between your fingers and toes for small red bumps that is a tell tale sign.
Good luck and stay healthy!

My son had Cocksackie around 1 year old. I agree with Deb R. Give him as much fluids as he'll stand :o) and Tylenol and Motrin will not only help with fever, but blisters. Cocksackie is known for leaving small blisters in the back of the throat which can be irritating especially when eating. This virus stinks because you have to "wait it out". But it shouldn't be super long. Good luck, and hugs to your little one.
If he is not getting better get him back to the doctor. Ali
as i remember, just keep him hydrated and comfortable, if the doc told you to use tylenol or motrin for the fever then use it. there isnt much you can do otherwise, lots of tlc. the good news is that if they have already diagnosed it, then it is most likely on the way out. most of these viruses with a rash or the little pimples like this get those symptoms as the virus is leaving, so by the time they know what it is, its on the way out. its the worst part of it, but it shouldnt last long. hope he feels better quick. by the way, depending on your temp outside, but i find that when they get all worked up, especially when they wake up like that at night and dont know how to soothe themselves, i just bundle them and step out on my porch, pace and sing and bop and all that good stuff, being outside seems to break the spell most of the time. good luck
