Craddle Cap - I Think

Just a short intro - My 9 month old son has been sick for the past 3 weeks with new stuff each week. First was a cold that turned into chicken pox. Then he got his first ear infection. And now we are looking at a nasty viral infection in this throat - very red and swollen with a high fever that lasted 36 to 48 hours even though we were rotating the tylenol and motrin. Yesterday I noticed some yellowish spots in his hair line in front. It's little spots and is kind of scaley. He has an entire head full of very thick dark brown hair so I didn't notice it until yesterday but it is all over the top of his head. He is 9 motnhs old and has never had scalp issues. I guess I am mostly just wondering how to get rid of it and if it could be associated with any of his sicknesses? Any thoughts???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for your responses. We tried the baby oil and it really help to clear it up. It is not completely gone but I think it will go away much quicker now that we tried this. The down side is that he has so much hair that even washing it 3 times didn't get all of the baby oil out. I guess I will try a couple more times tonight. Thanks again for you suggestions:)

i see you've already gotten rid of it , that's great, i hope your new baby is feeling better! if the cradle cap returns, or even if you get a dry, itchy scapl in the winter, somthing i do is use olive oil and a q tip to apply it. i think it's best before bed, then it has all night to absorb. and ues as cool of water as you can tolerate on the hair. God bless...M

My guess is he has cradle cap as a result of the perspiration from the fevers he has been experiencing. I know that the easiest way I ever found to get rid of it was to take baby oil or vaseline and put on the scalp...let it sit for a while to soften the cradle cap and then you can comb it/wash it out. There may be something out there that they have come up with to treat it that would be easier to wash out than the vaseline ( My "baby" turns 25 this month so it has been a while...lol) but that is the basic idea...get it softened up and then get rid of it. Nothing to worry about...just a temporary issue from the perspiration!!
Hope your little guy gets to feeling better soon

Cradle cap won't cause anything else and nothing he has would cause it. All of my kids got it, and since I only make bald babies :-) it was always very noticeable. They sell stuff for it in the baby section at WalMart (and I'm sure any other retailer would have it as well). I've never used any of it. I always used a little baby oil on their head and used those soft scrub brushes (like they used in the hospital on babies...sponge on one side and the bristles on the other) and it came right off. I'm not sure how well it would work with a head full of hair, but I'm sure if the oil got on his scalp, it would work just the same. You would just spend a little more time washing hair afterwards than I did. Good luck and I hope your little man starts feeling better soon!

Hi J.,
My son had craddle cap. It started off as a yellow flaky substance on his head. I tried the baby oil and it worked but it did not clear it up. I talked to my son's doctor about it and he said that the baby oil will just mask it and will not clear it up. He said that dandruff shampoo like Head and Shoulders would clear it up. I tried it and it cleared it up within a few days(I think that it took about a week for it all to go away and it never came back). I was using Johnson's shampoo for him but every now and then he'll get an itchy scalp. I'll use the dandruff shampoo and the itchy scalp will be gone. I never would have thought to use that on my own but it really did work for my son. The head, the cold, the ears, they are all connected. Hope this helps you!

my son had eczema and the one thing i learned was that if it's truly cradle cap (they tried to tell me my son's was) it will go away if you use the treatments the ladies describe. true cradle cap is a one time thing and goes away after treatment. so go try it! hopefully that's all it is. good luck!

It sounds just like cradle cap to me. I always took my children and washed their hair in the sink so that I could carefully scrape the cradle cap off. While the head is soaped up you can gently rub with a comb. In a few hair washings it should be nice and clean.
