Hi K.,

Vaseline is a petroleum product and is not good for the brain (it does absorb into the scalp). Renew lotion from Melaleuca will completely get rid of it but if you don't try that, then I would go with an olive oil that will not do any damage.

I used olive oil on my baby. Rub in the oil and wait 20 minutes then wash (I only used the oil before shampooing). You can try and loosen the flakes a little with the oil on so they come off in the washing and combing process.

you need to use a natural oil, such as olive oil, not one that is petrolium based. rub it in, then comb gently untill most of it flakes off, then wash the baby's hair... repeat as nessisary. :)

baby oil or just plain mineral oils works great too, rub it in and leave it. Flaking will subside over a short while. Picking useless.

For my little one's I rubbed their scalp with baby oil BEFORE their bath. It made all the little flakes clump up. Then when I washed their hair, the "clumps" washed away. After the bath, I would put a little baby oil on their scalp to help keep it moist until the next bath time. No worries, it will clear up soon

Both of my girls had it. We applied Vitamin E oil about 15 minutes before bath. We rubeed it in and let it sit. Washed it out at bathtime. Worked like a charm! (Even with their full head of hair!)

Yes, repeat after a few days. My five month old had cradle cap also, but I used baby oil instead. I put the baby oil on a qtip to gently loosen the cradle cap and then wash her hair. I would repeat the process after a few days and it gets better.

What I was told and did was put baby oil in their hair and combed it through and waited about an hour I think and then washed the hair and with one of my boys I had to do it three times I think and the other one only once and the other one I didn't have to. That is what I did.

I definitely agree about not using vasaline. I always used olive oil. Just let it sit for a while before bath time. It may take a couple applications. It works wonderfully AND the vitamins are absorbed through the skin as a bonus.
When my first child was born, my Dr. and midwife told me to wipe her down with olive oil for the first month instead of water baths. It sounds weird, but I did it and now at 34 she has the most beautiful skin! Bacteria doesn't grow in olive oil and you don't use enough to make the child smell like a salad! (Also eliminates the possibility of cradle cap!)
Congratulations on your new baby !!!

Believe it or not, I used Head and Shoulders shampoo-as recommended by a girlfriend that is a mom AND a pediatrician. Worked like a charm. I just had to be careful not to get in my baby's eyes-not too hard when they are tiny. The cradle cap got less and less until it disappeared completely. I realize this remedy isn't for everyone but it worked for me!

Try California Baby's Tea Tree and Lavender shampoo. It worked on my daughter's cradle cap in two washes. That stuff is magic!

I used the Gentle Naturals Cradle Cap Care after I just couldn't stand my daughter's cradle cap and having Daddy rub it with his beard stubble after a bath wasn't working. I used it once a day for 2 days, then put her in her exersaucer and *gently* rubbed all the scales off with a plastic doll's brush. Gently is the key word! I bathed her afterwards and the cradle cap was gone, never to return. I recommend using this in between baths and when you don't have to take the baby out anywhere. The cream is kind-of greasy, smells great going on, but stinks like old soap after a night. Gentle Naturals is sold at Babies R Us and Target in a green bottle with Pooh characters. Good luck!

I know this will sound super weird, and probably gross to some people. My husband used to sit with our boy in his lap, and gently rub his little head with his stubbly chin (he has a Homer Simpson beard, LOL). The cradle cap flakes ended up on Daddy's chin, which was easily washed away. In my own experience it is no big deal, and the child will eventually outgrow it. My son actually had it off and on until he was about 2.5 years. I would also suggest a super soft, tight bristled baby brush run through the hair PRIOR to the bath and washing.

My daughter had it when she was young. We actually put baby oil on her head, and after ten minutes we rinsed it off. We did that every day for about 2 weeks and it went away on its own :)

I always used baby oil because when you wash the babies hair it will be easier to wash out the baby oil and you can apply as often as you feel.

I have three kids and each one of them had cradle cap. I tried the vaseline on #1 who happened to have quite a bit of hair - what a mess trying to get him cleaned up. A friend of mine who works at a ped office said the quickest solution is head & shoulders shampoo. YOU HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO GET IT IN THEIR FACE OR EYES. Wet baby's head, then put on the shampoo and rub it in gently. Let it sit there about 5 mins and then gently rub it in again and rinse. You may need to do it twice, but I did it each bath for 2 or three times and it cleared right up. PLEASE, PLEASE BE SURE YOU DON'T GET IT IN EYES OR FACE!

I always used a dab of mineral oil. Everyone I recommended this to did it as well and did not have problems with cradle cap.
I did it everytime I bathed the baby and found that this worked wonders.

My daughter had cradle cap too. Her pediatrician recommended not worrying about it. It did go away on its own. I read that it actually is due to too much oil rather than too little and that the best solution was washing more and brushing to get rid of flakes.

My daughter had the same thing at the same age. My mom (a PICU nurse) covered her scalp in extra virgin olive oil and fine tooth combed the flakes out. She did this about 3 times in a row with johnson's baby shampoos in between. It worked so well and it never came back! Don't forget to clean out the comb each time as it accumulates this gross grey gunk (the flakes and oil make it, ew!). Good luck!

My son had it really bad. A quick and simple solution...when bathing, shampoo his/her head with J&J head and body wash or Baby Aveeno Shampoo and let it soak in while bathing @ every bathtime. I used to do it morning and night just because it was so bad. Then with a warm washcloth, rub the scalp gently until rinsed off. It does help!
PS: This is also good for baby exema on the face, milk bumps, etc...

I used olive oil. Put it on 10-15 minutes befre bath time. It works great, and all natural. It will go away after a few washes (depending on how much)
Be careful, becuase baby gets slick on the first rinse!! :O)
Don't pick at the cap or put lotion on it. I have read it bothers the parent more than the baby. Good luck and let us know!
