Any one have any rememdies to get rid of cradle cap?
My 8 week old has a head of hair, but under it is completely dry & flaky. It looks awful.
I've tried rubbing baby oil into his scalp before using J&J baby shampoo, but it did not help!
Thanks in advance!
Both of my babies had cradle-cap and I finally had to use an adult hiar brush (stiffer bristles) and sort of rub back and forth with the brush. Don't do it so hard that the scalp bleeds but the scalp will get red. The baby won't like it b ut it worked for me. Then wash the baby's hair.

There is a cream type deal, they sell it at WalMart. In the baby wipe aisle, top shelf above the wipes. It's called so and so's cradle cap lotion. You put it on, comb the baby's hair and then give him his bath so it washes out. The trick is that you have to use a very fine tooth comb, so it lifts the flakes. I know, it's odd that I know exactly where it is, but I just bought some. I really don't have the entire store memorized, honest! LOL

Hi! You are on the right track. I have six kids and I have always used baby oil. Put it on then let it sit for a few minutes. Then using a baby comb scrape off the flakes and then wash with baby soap. You might have to do it a good 3 times or so but it will work! :-) Hope that helps!

My son had it really bad when he was a few months old. I took him to the doctor and was told to use Selsum Blue Shampoo. Just be careful not to get it in his eyes because it is not tear free. I think you should take the baby to the doctor and see what they say. My son's spread to his cheeks and forhead. It was horrible. But once I started using the Selsum Blue a few times a week, it cleared up very nicely. The doctor even told me to use it on his face, very carefully of course. You have to be careful with the baby oil, because that can make it worse. And some tear free baby shampoos can dry the scalp out and make it worse. Good luck and take care. Also, hang in there. This can come and go during the first year of life.

My son was born with a full head of hair and had cradle cap from the time he was 2 months old until very recently (he is now 13 months). We worked on it all the time. I don't know if he finally outgrew it or what. I have a double whammy with him though - he is biracial and naturally has VERY dry skin so I can only put him in the bath every couple days. Most days I would put on baby oil gel, work it in with a soft stage 1 toothbrush, let it sit for a few hours and then massage his head with the toothbrush again and then the fine tooth comb to remove the flakes the toothbrush kicked up into his hair. When I washed his hair, I would gently scrub his head with my fingernails.
I tried the cradle cap lotion I found at Target in the green bottle with Whinnie the Pooh on it and that did NOTHING and smelled gross too.
Good luck,
K.

T-gel shampoo or Selsun blue is good, you may even apply olive oil or coconut oil 2-3 times a week, your baby might be having some seborrheic dermatitis or cradle cap

My advice would be not to worry about it unless it is bothering your baby. My youngest had disgusting looking cradle cap and no hair, soit was easy to see. But the more I messed with it (oils, combimg, brushiing, etc.) the worse it looked and the more it seemed to bother her. Eventually it went away. She also had eczema on her face which we treated with hydrocortisone, and this too eventually went away.
If you are nursing, I recommmend taking fish oil or eating plenty of salmon. This seemed to improve both skin conditions somewhat.
Good luck!

My son had a mild case and we used olive oil on his head. We would leave it on for about 30mins-1hour before his bath then used a washcloth with baby soap when we washed his head. We also used a babybrush when he was taking a bath to try and loosen it up a little more.
If it is bothering him or if he gets a raw spot I would suggest Aqaufor by Eucerin. A little goes along way!

My daughter was born with a full head of hair that did not fall out. She had the same problem. I would never use such a strong product as head and shoulders on a baby that young. Instead I used Olive Oil. It was recommended to me by my midwife, and it worked very well. You just use it 30 to 60 minutes before you wash his hair.
If you still want another thought you can try homeopathic solution. Boiron makes this remedy for cradle cap. You should be able to find it at Whole Foods.
Our ped also recommended Head and Shoulders Sensitive scalp. We maybe used it 4 times and that was the end of the cradle cap.
Good luck!

My ped. suggested using Head and Shoulders Sensitive formula, since cradle cap is a form of dandruff and the toothbrush/oil method doesn't work well when there is a lot of hair. Worked for us...

they have stuff in stores for cradle cap removal but I would ask the doctor. My daughter had a full head of hair with the cradle cap and he told me to make sure all the shampoo was out and use a type of moisturizer with the shampoo for her head to to just comb out with a fine tooth comb after everything was washed out completely. He had also told me to use head and shoulders but she was older than your child at the time. I would ask the doctor to be sure.

put the baby oil on his head and massage it in and leave it there for a few hours. You can also try using olive oil. After it has soaked in use a fine comb and gently comb his hair making sure you get down to his scalp. If he has a lot you'll have to do this more than once, but don't try to get it all in one day...it took me a few days to get rid of it in my daughters hair. You just have to be persistant and gentle.

mustella makes a tear free cradle cap shampoo, however I strongly recommend allergy testing as cradle cap is usually a food allergy.if you are nursing you will need to watch what you eat if you are using formula try switching brands,I finally went to similac ar as it was the only one that didn't make the cradle cap worse it went away in 2 weeks. But yeah we did the olive oil, dandruff shampoo and everything else under the sun. If your baby has excema and gas, loose stools, constipation etc that is another give away to the food allergy. we found out our daughter was allergic to eggs(I was nursing)and was also having a reaction to soy formula.Your insurance should cover it and they just do a little skin test. it saved us months of sleepless nights and fustration with the cradle cap.

Baby oil works, you just need to let it stay on longer. I would put on my son's head in the morning and waited until the evening bath to wash it out. It started to flake off and I combed his hair with a fine tooth comb to work it all out. I also massaged his head with a soft baby brush in the bath to loosen it. It took I think about 2 times for him to be rid of it. I also did ot for my neighbor. She had it far worse and it took about 4 times.

Jessica - My son was older than 8 weeks when he had this problem, so I am not sure if this is right for a younger baby? I rubbed in baby oil and used a baby brush to loosen the flakes. I also didn't wash it out right away, but brushed his hair a few times during the day to help loosen it more. As I recall, it took me a few weeks to totally clear it up. But, I wasn't really trying that hard to get rid of it, because I knew it wasn't bothering him, it only looked bad to me. I hope this helps.

My son was born with a full head of hair and at one of his early doctor visits, we noticed the cradle cap. The doctor suggested the baby oil as well, and all that did was make his hair slimy. The other thing he suggested was when washing his hair, to use my nails, not my finger tips, as this loosens the dry skin. This seemed to work fine, after about a week of using my nails, every other night when washing his hair, it hasn't come back. Hope this helps.

I use to message their scalps for a while with the J&J Baby Shampoo and then follow-up with a pure aloe scalp message. My children never had craddle cap. I am not sure if it was because of the aloe or that they were not prone to it. It might be worth a try. Hope you find something that helps! If your baby is getting formula at all, make sure there is no food sensitivities or allergies. Skin problems are the bodies way of telling us our babies systems are not handling something quite right.

my two year old son had the same problem as an infant and it eventually started to spread to his face. i tried the medela shampoo and the baby oil and some other cream (that actually made his hair fall out but the cradle cap came back!!!) none seemed to work. my pediatrician suggested putting the baby oil on in the morning and washing it out at night using the soft brush. i told him it wouldn't work since i had already tried the baby oil and the brush, but i would do as he said just to prove him wrong. well... he proved me wrong (lol). it worked! when my daughter was born -same problem, but different remedy. the medela shampoo works for her, but i have found with both children i couldn't use j&j baby soap. try a few things (and you will most likely have to stick with one for a few times to see if it is effective) and see what works your child, although i do think that selsun bl, hd&sh, and t-gel seem too harsh for a baby. best wishes.

Hi,
My 1rst daughter also had cradle cap under hair at an early age, and it kept recurring until she was about 10m. I found that baby oil only worked if I left it on for a while first, and then used a soft baby brush to gently massage & flake it off before washing her scalp. The oil alone never worked for me without the brush.
Hope this helps!
