Cradle Cap - Rio Rancho, NM

My daughter has cradle cap, and has for about 3 months-in that time I've put olive oil on her head, let it sit and then use the hospital brush to loosen the scales and wash it out. I've also tried the Natural Care cradle cap ointment-that stuff stinks and doesn't work. I went to her 4 month well baby check today and the doc said to use tgel shampoo and only wash her hair 2 times a week. Just curious, before I use the shampoo, if anyone has used in yourselfs or on your babies? Also she has eczema pretty bad & I was told to rub some hydracortizone cream on it and then vaseline on top of that-any other ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responces, so far I'm using the dandruf shampoo and oil & just washing her hair a couple times a week (not a biggie since she's almost totally bald) & it seems to be working fine. I've learned about some new products that I'd not heard of before & if this doesn't work I'll contact one of you to purchase it, however we're very limited on income & so I'm sure you understand that I'd like to continue with this method for now. As far as the ezcema goes, that's looking tons better too-and you're right aquaphor is much better than vaseline, thanks. I had/have aquaphor because I use it when my hands get cracked & when lips are chapped.

One of my twins had horrible cradle cap. We did almost the same thing - washing hair every other day - using the baby hair brush with shampoo (Aveeno) to rub the scalp. We would leave the olive oil on his head after the bath and after a couple of weeks it went away. He still has eczema pretty bad and we have found a combo of the following to work - the hydracorizone cream and aquaphor (similar to vaseline - but much better). I have to swear by the aquaphor (you can get it at Target). Good luck and I hope everything works out!

I saw some other advice on here.... Great advice!
My son had HORRIBLE cradle cap and even worse excema sealed UNDER it. It was a nightmare. Our pediatrician told us to use head and shoulders every other day until it cleared up. It worked REALLY fast! Just be careful not to get it in her eyes. Then I treated the excema with hydrocortizone cream and Aquafor. I did the hydrocortizone and auquafor treatment twice a day until it cleared up. It worked really fast. I would definately consider using the head and shoulders and then brushing out the scales. When my second baby had cradle cap, one time was all it took. Good luck and let us know what happens!

I used Head & Shoulders on my daughter...worked great! She also has eczema now (22 months) and we use Aveeno shampoo/wash for eczema...it has helped alot in addition to using the hydrocortisone cream.

With the eczema, have you considered a food allergy? Whether you breastfeed or formula feed doesn't matter. If your baby is allergic for example to cow's milk protein, she can be exposed to that either through a formula that has cow's milk in it or if you are breastfeeding and you are consuming dairy products she can be exposed that way. Just something to think about and talk over with your pediatrician. I wen't through the same thing with my daughter and it was a milk allergy. I also went through it with my second child and she also had a food allergy, but her allergy was soy. Good luck!

My Daughter went through EVERYTHING that yours did. I know when I use ANY kind of Baby Shampoo, it would cause the baby cap REALLY bad and then she would break out in Eczema. The Fragrance in Lotion or even in the baby wash or shampoo would make her break out. To the point where she would be screaming because it was so inflamed. FOr the Baby Cap, you can put some Baby Oil and let it sit for like 15 minutes as you message it into the scalp before washing out. Then get a comb and brush it away. What I did , I switched to a Kids shampoo with conditioner and then after I wash her hair, I brush it to get the left over shampoo sitting on the scalp... Ever since then I have not had a problem with the baby cap. With the Eczema make sure that you don't put lotion with Fragrance in it. I started using a Natural lotion with ALoe Vera by Jason. Her skin finally started healing and its not getting as inflamed. When she does get little red marks, I will put a Little of the hydrocortisone and it usually clears it up.
My Doctor suggested to put my daughter on a vitamin that has zinc in it because that will help. So far, She has been doing a lot better! I hope that this helps, I am sure that you will get many more things to try...

My son had cradle cap too and I tried everything. So I just stopped trying. He is 7 mo now and its gone. he grew out of it. And both my babies has eczema and my favorite thing that works is hydrocortisone OINTMENT. Not the cream because that never works its a prescription but I use that and it clears up quick.

My son had cradle cap too (extreme) and now he only has only little spot; he is already 4.5 months old. Our pediatrician recommended that we put Vaseline on his head one hour before bathing him and then take a baby brush with baby shampoo to brush out all of the skin. We did this routine about 3-4 times per week and you would not believe the difference. You should not put Vaseline on her head when she goes to bed because you need to allow her skin to breathe and allow her sweat glands to work. We also put a small amount of Aveno lotion on his head after the bath to help with the itchiness and that seems to work. Our pediatrician also recommended using a little Head and Shoulders shampoo once a week, but we only tried that one time because the other suggestion worked.

My son has eczema (terrible). We were given 3 options. 1. Use hydrocortisone cream to help with the red scaly spots, 2.Use a prescribed topical antibiotic (which works wonderfully), 3. give our son an oral antibiotic (which made him ill). Options 1 and 2 work best, but we still have to use them when he has his extreme flair ups, however we use lots and lots of lotion right after the bath and almost every time we change his diaper and that really helps.

I agree with the moms who recommended the Arbonne ABC products. I do not sell it, but was turned on to it when my son was 3 months old and had horrible cradle cap. I started using the baby oil on him and it went away within a week, never to return. I like that the product is natural and not a "medicine". Good luck!

My baby had a lot of cradle cap as well and the only thing that really worked was using a lot, and I mean LOTS of baby oil. Don't be afraid to put it in there and rub it in. Leave it overnight and wash off the next day.

Hi J.. I know exactly what you are going through...my 15-week-old son just went through a yucky case of cradle cap. It's so ugly. Poor little babies!
Anyway, I wanted to say that I 100% agree with anyone who suggests using Arbonne International's all natural Baby Care products. You can specifically use the ABC body oil on their cradle cap area, then comb out the flakes. Then, wash their head with the ABC Hair and Body Wash. Then, I recommend using the ABC body lotion on their scalp. It works like a charm! Plus, these products are 100% certified Vegan, Hypoallergenic, pH correct and Pediatrician tested and recommended.
It also works miracles on Eczema! I even have some amazing before and after pics!
I also live in Rio Rancho, and would be happy to give you some FREE samples of these products to try on your little one. You can also check it out online at: www.mandyolsen.myarbonne.com.
Good luck!

I read somewhere recently that they've linked Eczema, dandruff & ailments like that to Omega-3 difficiency. If you breastfeed, you might want to look into adding more fish to your diet or looking into taking an Omega-3 supplement. My husband also uses vinegar on his dandruff (all those ailments are supposed to be linked). You could look into (since your baby is only 3 months old) vinegar on a cotton swab. We just started Omega-3 supplements, so I don't know how that's working yet, but my friend's daughter has eczema & she noticed that it wasn't as bad after they started eating more fish. At least it's something to try ; ). When she gets older, you can add fish oil to foods (as a supplement). Good Luck!

My baby had cradle cap also and I work for a pediatrician who recommeded I use Tegrin or Selsun Blue Shampoo. I used Selsun Blue because it was easier to find. It worked!! Cradle cap is basically the same thing as dandruff. We washed my babies hair every other day and were of course very careful not to get it in her eyes. In fact we held her over the sink and washed her hair before her bath each time. That cradle cap stuff even causes baby acne and that cleared up as well with the dandruff shampoo. Good luck

Hi J.,

The Arbonne baby products hands down. Call me and I can get a sample to you. I'm also in Rio Rancho, so I'm "just around the corner." Arbonne's products are botanically based and do not contain mineral oil or petroleum. They're also pediatrician tested... not just recommended. Mineral oil and petroleum are bad for your skin and will dry it out even more and is real bad for eczema. Give your daughter a bath in the baby wash... to be used on body and hair. Then put some Arbonne baby oil in her hair and apply the baby lotion to her body. You will quickly see a difference. Let me know if you have any questions.
