My baby girl, 2 1/2 months old, has cradle cap and I don't know how to get rid of it. One of our sons had this problem years ago, and I couldn't get rid of his either. I tried softening it with oil, scrubbing it, and combing it out during baths. I finally gave up and he had cradle cap for another year before it cleared up. I don't want that to happen again with this baby. What is the best remedy?
Hi S.... my daughter had a terrible case of cradle cap and the only remedy that helped her was head and shoulders shampoo... I know it sounds crazy, but it actually worked... all you got to do is leave it on for five minutes every bath time and in a week you'll see improvement.. Good luck!

Selson Blue for as long as you can keep it on his head without getting it in his eyes. It's not as hard as it sounds. Both of my girls had it. My 3 year old's went away on it's own but it took forever. My 13 month old still has it but it's getting better. Good luck!

Try putting Aquafor by Eucerin on it during the day in addition to the baby oil and scrubbing. My son had a mild case of cradle cap when he was a baby and this really helped. This may just be something she has to grow out of. There are some over the counter remidies that are made for cradle cap that you can try. Good Luck!

Our pediatrician had us use head & shoulders dandruff shampoo. You have to be careful to not get it in their eyes but it worked great to clear it up. I would wash their hair and also use the soft scrubby part of the brush they used at the hospital when for their first bath. I have also used a fine toothed comb to comb the shampoo through the icky parts on the scalp. I've used this with all 3 of my boys (ages almost 7, 4, and 7 months old).

Soften it with olive oil, then comb out as much as you can. Shampoo it like normal, then put some tea tree lotion on it. I think Aveeno makes some for babies. Otherwise, you can find tea tree at any natural grocery store. You can get the tea tree oil, too, but be careful if your child is sensitive. Tea tree can sting some kids. I put a tea tree conditioner in my kids' hair. I still do to this day and they are 4 1/2 and 2. You might have to do it a couple of times, but the tea tree works wonders.
Depends on what is causing this, but candidas albicans is a good possibity. Plain yogurt should help. Just put it on the scalp, let it "work" for a while and then use a soft brush to help remove it. Your baby may be too young to take acidophilous or bifidous - check with your doctor. If you are breast feeding it may help to change your diet to reduce candidas (yeast). You should add acidophilous and bifidous to your diet. It won't so any harm if you don't have a candidas problem but should help if you do. Check out the book, The Yeast Connection, for diet and symptom info.
Another thing to watch out for in the heat is to keep the head cool and shaded as sweat seemed to make this worse with my kiddos. Good Luck!

Hi two of My Kids had cradle cap. I would suggest using paul mitchell tea tree shampoo. Just be careful when rinsing not to get shampoo in the eyes.afterward use a small amount of canola oil and apply to scalp. Also only rinse hair with fresh running water from the water spout. Not from the tub water. When My kids were small I for a short time used water from the tub when I rinsed I realized that the build up could be due to not throughly rinsing. Hope this helps. You may also need to use a comb to remove.J.

Both my girls had this. I took vasaline (petroleum jelly) and the new born hair brush thing they give you at the hospital with the brush on one side and the sponge on the other. I put the vasaline on the cradle cap, massaged it a bit and then let it sit for a minute or so, then took the brush part of the thing I mentioned before from the hospital and went back and forth on their heads. Then I would wash their hair in the sink or baby bath. I had to do it a few times but it really worked!

Both my kids had cradle cap (plus my nephews). Our pediatricians recommended dandruff shampoo. It works like a charm (once a week). BUT you have to make sure you do not get it in their eyes. Holding them like a foot ball and washing their hair while holding the back of their head with your hand (over the sink works really well). Also when you wash their head use the comb side of the sponge they gave you at the hospital to very gently exfoliate. I only used the shampoo (very little) 2 or 3 times per kid.

I ignored my DG's cradle cap and it went away a lot faster than most of my friends baby's did. I noticed that when I did try to "remedy" the situation it made it worse.

I had this issue with my DD and paid to see the doctor and tried several expensive treatments. This is what works and is doctor recomended. Use regular Selson blue on the top of the head 2 times a week just a drop and lightly rub in circles. Then at all times keep vitamin E oil on. A greasy baby is a happy baby. If you keep doing that it will go away. The vitamin E oil is nice it doesn't smell too bad and you don't have to wash it off like other oils that go rancid further drying out the scalp. Good luck!

My daughter has sensitive skin like I do, and I didn't want to use adult shampoo on her little head and risk getting it into her eyes. I did some research and I also ended up with Arbonne's baby oil and hair/body wash. This worked like a charm on cradle cap and any eczema she had. You can order it on the website at Arbonne.com; the website will hook you up with a consultant.

My daughter also had terrible cradle cap. The only thing that worked for me was to comb it off at her scalp. It lifted off rather easily, but took all of her baby hair with it! I was alarmed, but, as my mom pointed out, the hair must not have been attached to her scalp or it wouldn't have come off so easily. I will let you know that once I got it all of, it continued to return in small patches until she was over two years old. I do know that, tempting as it is, it's a bad idea to pick it off with your fingers, as there is some risk of infection. Good luck!

My little girl had it, and the doctor told us to put vasteline on it before her bath, let it set a little bit, then with the scrubby that we got from the hospital and her baby shampoo, gently scrub it off. got rid of ours, and it never came back, thankfully! Good luck!

My boys all had cradle cap and I did everthing you did. It would mostly clear up using oil and a fine comb. But with my last son who is now 13 months, it would not go away. I realized that it looked different that the usual cradle cap, more of a rough, raised red skin. Since I was already treating small patches of eczema (rough, raised patches of dry skin)on his legs, I decided to use the cream on his head, and sure enough, it cleared up! He still has alittle left, but not enough to treat. I just used an over the counter eczema cream, and it would leave his hair greasy looking, but it was great finding a 'cure' for his poor little head. The skin looked so itchy, I'm sure it was a relief to him! Give it a try!

it sounds like you are doing what I was going to suggest. My little one had it something TERRIBLE. I finally put olive oil on it-let it sit for about 15 mins, gave him a bath and shampooed his hair with baby shampoo, and then with the brush we got from the hospital, I used the side/edge of the brush and slowly, in little strokes, combed backward. It took it completely off and haven't had a problem since. GOOD LUCK!

My little girl who is 3 1/2 months also has cradle cap, the best thing that I have found is after I scrub her little head with a brush during her bath I use hydrocortizone cream. I have been doing this for almost 2 months and you can hardly tell that she has cradle cap.
Hope this helps.

I used olive oil on my son, and it worked great for me. First, I'd give him a bath and massage his head with a warm wash cloth. Then, after patting his head dry, I'd massage the olive oil into his head and wait a little. After that, I'd use the little plastic brush they gave me at the hospital, rubbing in small circles around his head. I always had to re-wash his hair afterwards, because so much was being removed. That process took about 2 weeks, before it was gone completely. Good luck!

I actually used head and shoulders on my daughter when she had it, you have to do it in the sink making sure it stays away from their face and eyes, but it cleared it up big time.
They have milder versions of the shampoo now.
Also there is some stuff at Target, it a aqua bottle in the baby supply aisle, not sure the name of it that helped big time too. Cradle cap can be irratating to a baby too, itchy so if you can try to clear it up.
Ask your Pediatrician, but mine was the one that suggested the head and shoulders or selsun blue and that was what worked for us.

I don't know if we just got lucky or not but we just used the scrubby they gave us at the hospital. It worked great for us. We scrubbed all the hair off the top of his head but the cradle cap was gone and didn't come back. I've only seen one marketed comercially, it's called the American Red Cross All-In-One bathing brush. The bristles are soft enough that you don't have to worry about hurting them but tough enough to get the scales off. I hope it works for you.

I used Arbonne baby oil, it has no mineral oil in it and worked sooooo much better than the olive oil that I had tried. Let me know if you have any questions :)
My doctor recommended as did the nurse at the hospital a regular dandruff control shampoo. You have to be very careful not to get it in the babies eyes obviously, but that is what has been recommended to me be 2 different sources.
Good Luck!

What most mothers don't know is that cradle cap is actually a yeast problem.....especially if what your doing doesn't help it at all. Scrubbing and softening it won't help it either if it's yeast. Please go to the website www.nativeremedies.com and order the Cradle-Cap Salve. It's a bit pricey but it works and is all natural. It's made with healing and soothing herbs. My baby had eczema and nothing worked until I ordered their cream for eczema and it helped clear it up. Hope this helps. One more thing. My brothers baby had severe cradle cap which went into his eyes. After a year my mother got mad at him and his wife cause the baby looked pathetic and miserable and they weren't doing anything for the baby. Finally she did some research and found out it was cradle cap caused from yeast and as soon as she started treating it with a yeast cream, it cleared up. Rose :o)
