I have a 14 month old son and I watch an 11 month old boy twice a week. I absolutely love doing crafts! I tried to make those turkey hands (when you trace the childs hand and it becomes the turkey) with them for Thanksgiving and while my son could almost color it in, the 11 month old just wanted to eat the crayons. With Christmas coming I want to start making some stuff but I have no idea what is age appropriate! I understand that my options are limited because they are not the oldest but there has to be something right!???

My daughter loved the foam stickers at this age. They have them in all kinds of themes, shapes, etc. They are pretty affordable. I got a tub of them for about $5. They can stick them onto a large foam sheet or construction paper or a tin box, or they even visors and door knob decorations, etc. They are easy for them to peel as well much easier than regular stickers. Plus easier to hold as they are larger. It would keep my daughter busy for a long time =) And it is easy for mom as well. No prep time, just stick everything out. Easy to clean, usually involves picking up the backings that came off of the stickers.

what if you took a round ornament and had them put a painted hand on it to make the print. you could take a paint pen and put details such as name and year dots and other decorations. i am sure the other mom would really love it. you could seal it with clear spray after the kids are well out of the way. they might be able to make a macaroni neckless. beads are some what still too small to work with.

I found that doing footprints was the easiest for kids under 2. You can do their footprints in brown and make them into reindeer heads. My little boy (just turned two) loved using the bingo stampers to make pictures. You can find them at Wal-Mart or teacher supply stores. You could also put them in their high chairs and let them finger paint or watercolor. It will be messy, but lots of fun!!!

The previous poster mentioned foam stickers, but my daughter ate foam things until she was about 18 months.

Of the crafts/coloring that my daughter brought home when she was very young, my favorites were anything that involved her handprint or footprint. Even though she couldn't really do crafty things herself, having a footprint or handprint on the page was still a piece of her and we kept those items, even if a teacher or someone else had to do the rest of the picture.

They are really too young just yet to be able to make something themselves. Like you said, the younger one just wanted to eat the crayons. I remember at my son's day care and even when I have subbed in a pre-k classroom, the teacher and aide end up doing most of the work. Take it easy this year. I know how excited you are about doing stuff with them, but it just may be too soon.
