Crazy Question

My daughter is in first grade and she is having a Christmas play (public school). My "crazy" question is...do most kids dress up for this (Christmas/holiday dress)? She did not attend this school last year and I am not sure. I don't want her to be under dressed or over dressed. Thanks

What can I do next?

Ask around to some other moms who also have older kids in the school. My only son is in Kindergarten this year and I hate that everyone seems to think that we've all done this stuff a million times before! LOL
Don't forget, though, that "dressed up" means different things to different people. I wouldn't go over-the-top (frilly Christmas dress). Have you ever gone to an event where you are over-dressed? Nothing worse. Ugh.
I don't think you could go wrong with a simple white/green or red sweater/black pants or skirt and maybe a Christmas-y hair bow/barrette/or necklace/pin to Jazz it up a bit.

I would say kind of go with a middle of the road type outfit. Nice black pants & a red sweater or something like that. My daughter had an event last night & there were a couple of girls in just regular clothes, but most were in just black pants or skirt & a red shirt. My daughter was pretty dressed up, but she doesn't mind, she loves getting dressed up. But if you're uneasy about it, you can definitely call the school or send a note to the teacher & they can lead you in the right direction.

If it's during school hours, you'll find most kids dress casual, as they would any other day, but overall, you'll see a variety of dress. I would dress her the way she and you feel is best, unless the teacher is asking for a specific dress.

all schools are different. why not ask her teacher or another mom? I'm guessing that a nice dress, not too fancy, might work.

For a preformance it is normal to dress it up. What I would do is ask your childs teacher for the dress code to be sent home. That way you, and the rest of the parents, have a clear understanding of what is expected :)

Hi S.,

You'll have both, kids that really dress up and others that wear their normal school clothes. I would say to dress her how you would like her to look in the pictures that you will sure be taking :)

Have fun!!!

I'm sure the teacher will send home a note telling you what she should be wearing for the play. If it gets close and there's been no communication from the teacher, send a note to the teacher and ask. If it's really a play, I'm sure that she has a definate idea as to what each child should wear. Dont' go out and buy anything until you hear from the teacher!

I am a music teacher, every year I put on a concert. I tell the kids to wear their holiday best. Which usually ranges from jeans to the nicest stuff! Call the teacher to check, just to be sure! Good luck!

We have found that kids are dressed from one extreme to the other for events at school. My daughter LOVES to dress up - so she does and she is always fine - she always receives comments on how nice she looks - and she has never been the only one dressed up. When she was in private preschool more kids dressed up than not, but there were still those who were what I would consider underdressed for events. I'm a believer in making special occasions special. There are so few occasions to dress up...so why not? IMHO, it's always better to be a bit overdressed than under. Just my two cents...

My suggestion would be to call the school. It is likely that they have been doing this for years and the families just kind of "know" what dress to do. My son's first few years at his school it was never spelled out. Now that my girls go there they put "wear your Sunday best" on the note about the program. It is likely that the school secretary or someone in the office can give you an idea where to go. If not, email the principal or head of the school or preschool. I'm sure they've fielded this question before.

I've been to several plays and music programs over the years for my girls. It wouldn't hurt to ask the teacher what she would prefer, but I have seen the children wear just about anything and everything from jeans and t-shirts to fancy-frilly dresses. I always had my girls dress somewhere in the middle. I nice looking but not-too fancy dress or a nice pair of dress pants with a Christmas sweater or a nice blouse. My girls never felt out of place.
