My husband and I are getting ready to transition our baby into her crib. We've been told by several hospital professionals at the NICU that bumpers are not safe, yet most of all bedding sets come with such gorgeous ones. Any ideas on what to do with the bumper pads? Thanks in advance!! :)
We put our crib bumper in the bed until our boys could roll around. When they started sleeping through the and moving more, we took it out.
I saved mine for visitors :) They were in a plastic container until visitors were coming...then the whole cribe set was put on the bed. I did have it in his bed at first...I would walk in and find his face in them or his feet tangled in them so I took them out for safety!
I just had to have them with my daughter...I bought everything in the set! I used the bumpers until she could roll around. This is what I discussed with her pediatrician. If they can't roll yet, then they can't get caught or suffocate. I just stored them in the attic after that and will bring them back out once my second daughter is born.

My daughter was able to scoot since an early age - I'd say 3 months. We used a bumper through her whole infancy, she's 21 months now and we have NEVER had a problem with it.
My son, totally different story. By the time he was about 5 months old he would manage to get tangled underneath it, very active little one... I had to take it off and haven't put it back in. He's almost 10 months and I may put it back in since I see him scoot to a corner, my dd always loved it since she could cuddle up against it.
I would say the personality or activity level will determine if you find it to be dangerous.

After talking with my pediatrician, I did not use the bumper pads with either of my children. With my son they came in the set and I just kept them in the bag in storage until we were done with the bedding set. I then rummaged the whole set. With my daughter I just bought the comforter (which I hung on the wall with quilt clips), matching crib sheets, and matching blankets, so I didn't have to worry about what to do with the bumper. Target is a great place to find very cute bedding that all comes separate and is very affordable. I personally think her room and crib looked just as cute without them. I would much rather have a hazard out of the crib than worry about not using the bumpers and wasting them.

I have used them bumpers on the cribs with each one of my girls. I have not had a problem with them. I took them off one time and my oldest got her leg caught in the rails of the bed. (Where the bumper would of been) And never agian did I put them in a crib with out the bumper. My kids face never got close to it or anything. I never worried about it. My 19 month old has not had a problem with it at all.
Just do what you feel is best.
