Crock Pot Oatmeal

I need a tried and true crockpot oatmeal recipe. I know all of the websites, but the 3 recipes I have tried have been terrible.. Over cooked, tasteless or scorched.

I am also thinking maybe it is my crockpot cooks too hot for oatmeal.
It is a Rival with a low or high setting..

We love steel cut oats. We do not eat it very sweet, we love raisins..

How do you all make yours and what brand/ style of crockpot do you use.. I am willing to purchase a different one..
Thank you for your time.

I love this lady's crockpot blog, most of the things I've made from her blog have been good. She has a couple oatmeal recipes listed on this page, I think I need to try the baked oatmeal !

I have a crock pot, that was my mothers. It seems to get much more hot then the crock pots nowadays.
This, is the recipe I use and it turns out great!! I substituted rice milk for dairy milk.

I have a Rival.

Maybe add more liquid to it (since it is scorched)???? Cook it for less time.... since it is either tasteless or scorched.

Towards the end of the cooking time... fluff it up with a fork... and add in cut up fruit.... that way the fruit gets softer/cooked in... and adds a natural sweetness since cooking fruit naturally gets sweeter....
Or drizzle honey, just a tad on it. Or cinnamon.... also adding blueberries to it is good.

I would, check it before the cooking time ends. And stop it there, if it seems fine. Once turned off.... it will still "cook." So to me, no need to always let it cook until the full end time, of the cooking. :) that is what I do. Same for rice dishes.... and I always fluff it up, in between, with a fork. Since foods like this... really needs to be fluffed up.

all the best,
Susan

This isn't the answer to your question, but I have a yummy overnight steel cut oat recipe that doesn't require a crock pot (I've also had no luck with mine, mostly because I think I don't want to make that much oatmeal). Let me know if you would like it.

I have never made crock pot oatmeal. But I Love Alton Brown and I know he has done a Good Eats episode on oatmeal that included crock pot oatmeal. My crock pot is just too big for me to attempt it.

I use Bob's Red Mill, Mc Cann's Irish oatmeal, and the generic HEB bulk oatmeal. All are equal in quality in my opinion. I just cook them on the stove with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and clove while it is cooking. I add a small amount of stevia and real butter when I put it in the bowl to eat. I also use berries in the summer. It takes about 20 mins. I have tried the boil it first then soak it overnight, but it was not really any different than making it fresh in the morning.

Sorry I wasn't much help, but steel cut oats is one of my favorite breakfasts :)

HI L.,

I have had no luck with crock pot oatmeal! It always turns out too mushy for my taste. I'm anxious to hear if you get good recipes and have a good result!

I hope you find a recipe you like, just wanted to let you know, we bought a Rival crock pot a few years ago. After one use, we returned it because it was so psychotically hot! Didn't matter if ti was on "low" "high" or even the "warm" setting--it had one temperature--SURFACE OF THE SUN!! Our standby crockpot is the West Bend, it has a heated base and might work better for your purposes.

I just use a sauce pan. 1.5 cups steel cut oats, 3 c milk, 2 tbl cinnamon, brown sugar to taste, 1/4 c raisins, dash of salt. Gently boil everything for about 10-15 minutes. Top w butter and maple syrup. Yum!

I have an older (10 + years) Rival crock pot and I've done the overnight steel-cut oats for oatmeal thing too. I used one of those slow-cooker liners and don't start cooking until 11 or 12 the night before, set on low. I usually add 3 or 4 cups of water for each cup of oatmeal. I have a recipe at home that I can send to you if you are interested (at work right now).

When I was researching recipes for crock pot oatmeal the best advice I got was to consider the age of your crock pot. Newer-than-10 years old models get hotter and cook faster, the older ones don't get as hot and take longer. We have two crock pots that are older than 10 years old and never had any problems cooking oatmeal. Also, you have to fill the crock pot at least 2/3 full. I do NOT use steel cut, I use the thickest regular cut I can find, add evaporated milk and water and dried fruit, put it on low, and serve within 8 hours. We go to bed late and wake up early, so this is not a problem for us, but if you go to bed at 10 or earlier, have newer crock pots, and wake up later than 6, it will be dry and burnt.
