Stomached massage gently in clockwise motion and in the letters LOVE this helps. But I ever counter clockwise it stops up. Works on big people too. The clockwise is on the person. Up left bottom right
Ever since my daughter turned 4 months old we have been struggling with constipation. She is now 5 months old and the struggle continues. Pear juice works but I don't want to give it to her every day, we have tried giving her an extra bottle of water but that is a struggle. Any ideas? I feel like I am becoming obsessed with this kids poop.
She is on the gentlease formula, and she has always gone every other day which is fine. The stool is hard little poo balls and she has had one episode where there was a little bit of blood. If the pear juice works I will keep giving it to her, we give one ounce in two ounces of water every day.

What does her pediatrician say? Sometimes they will put babies on a very small dose of Miralax to help them. Personally if pear juice works -I would keep giving it to her and give it to her every day. Chronic constipation can cause fissures, and there's not much that's more painful. Trust me -pear juice every day is FAR preferable.
The pear juice won't hurt her. If you are concerned she will develop a taste for it, mix it with her formula.
Strong 2nd on
- what's her nutrition source(s)
- your definition of constipation (just because many once a day people don't get that even adults can be happily once a week people, and breastfed infants can often go 10 or 11 days)
Real constipation that ISN'T being caused by
- the wrong formula
- mixing formula incorrectly
- adding table foods too young
can be a sign that there is something wrong
- in the makeup of your breastmilk (huge number of variables here... from an allergy to something you're eating to lacking nutritional components, to, to, to)
- w/ her intestines (smooth muscles/ hyptonia, size -too large-, twists, rips, inflammation)
MOST OF THE TIME... There's nothing wrong physically... it's just that a parent doesn't define constipation correctly (meaning is trying to make their baby poop every day when they don't need to) OR that they've started table food too young, OR that they're adding water to formula instead of formula to water, OR that it's the wrong formula for that baby.
try prune juice, a teaspoon of karo syrup in her milk, honey diluted in hot milk...good luck!!!
.
Probiotics in powder form may help. You can add it to her formula, or you can wet your finger and dip it in the powder and have her eat it off your finger.
By constipation do you mean she pushes and grunts and nothing comes out and she cries, or does she just go every other day or even every 3rd day? I hear that whatever is "normal" for her is fine. But if the pear juice works, why stop it? I would check with the doctor. When my kids started potty training they would pee in the potty but want to poop in a pull up. They were withholding if I kept them in underwear. So we tried warm (as warm as they can drink it) apple juice and pear juice, both worked to stimulate their bowels it seemed (they would drink this while sitting on the toilet). At time we have used Miralax as well, but I would not use it on an infant unless directed by a doctor. Good luck and congrats on your little darling.
You didn't say if you were breast or bottle feeding her, that makes a HUGE difference, if @ the breast try to eat foods that will help her to go to the BR, the same fiber that you eat will help her as well. If you are bottle then try a different formula. An 'old wives remedy' that I used is to add a Tablespoon of Dark Karo Syrup to an 8oz bottle of milk/formula or if breastfeeding to an 8oz bottle of water. This worked for me but I think the Docs discourage it now.
If the constipation gets too bad be sure to call the Ped..
Oh, I forgot to say if you are bottle feeding, cold formula, water, juice whatever can cause some constipation, so alwayz warm the liquid a little.
Best to you & your DD
My daughter who is now 4 yrs had this problem when she was a baby. It was awful - her face would turn beat red because she was straining so hard to push her poop out all the while crying and screaming. If I took her diaper off and laid her on the floor I could literally see it. I would start crying myself because I simply did not know how to help her! There are all sorts of things you can do to help a constipated "incident" but there is a difference between a few instances here and there versus "chronic" constipation. My daughter definitely had "chronic". The ONLY thing that helped her was Miralax. It is safe for everyday use, is gentle and was suggested by her pediatrician. You simply put a cap full in along with whatever she has in her bottle, shake it up and it's good to go! There is absolutely no flavor - can even be mixed with water. It took a few days to notice a difference but it definitely solved the problem. On a side note, before she started the Miralax, one instance was so bad that I put petrolium jelly around the "area", took a nose snot sucky thing, filled it with warm water and shot it up her you know what. It worked but was definitely a short term fix to the problem! Good luck, I know how heartwrenching it is!!
Most likely, something in your breastmilk or her formula is bothering her. My son had the same issue and it turned out he has a dairy allergy. If you are nursing, cut our dairy. If on formula, switch to a non-dairy one. Also, give her a bit of probiotics every day. This has done wonders for my son. Prune juice is the best juice to use for constipation.
Being obsessed with kid's poop is very normal.
Did you recently switch from breast milk to formula? Add more water to her diet...you can water down the pear juice (half and half). You can get some movement. Rubbing her belly is good. Put her on her belly, I think this is about the time you start this. I also used to exercise their legs. Lay them on their back and just massage and pump their little legs singing a song. I used to do wheels on the bus. They love it.
This will help get their system moving.
Make sure you talk to your pediatrician about it. Constipation can get pretty bad.
my neice has the same issue that your little one has and my brother took her to the doctor and they gave her a medicine that is really mild and helps with her pooping. I am not sure of the name of it but ask your doctor. I know it is not a quick answer the only other thing that we were doing was giving her half apple juice and water and that would help. I hope that it gets better for you.
