Put Vicks rub on the bottom of his feet and rub it in good. Then put a pair of socks on. I don't know why it works, but it does!
My 1yo has been diagnosed w/ Croup and is currently on prednisone for throat swelling. Any advise on home remedies for the 2am coughing attacks? I've been doing the cool mist vaporizer, shower steam and a slow drive w/ the windows down...none of the above worked last night, he just got too tired to care after 2hrs and finally fell back asleep.
Thank you all for your help! Last night was a dream, he slept through, only waking for a few seconds to a cough. Let's pray tonight goes just as well! Maybe it's passing sooner than expected :-O

It is important to keep your child well hydrated. Offer water, flavored ice treats (such as Popsicles), or crushed ice drinks several times each hour. Or hold your child directly over a humidifier, and let the vapor blow directly in his or her face.
We stood in front of the open freezer, with baby bundled up, so he could breathe the cold, moist air. The cold is the key - it helps to shrink swollen tissues, just like an ice pack on an injury.
I feel for you - croup is a scary thing. I was always ready to rush to the hospital at a moment's notice. Luckily, we never had to (knock on wood)!
Been there, it sucks. Both our kids had it about a month apart in Nov/Dec. They were given a shot of a steroid that started with a D. One was given it directly by their ped and the other at the ER because it was after hours. I can't remember the name of it but it was a single dose and the bad cough/pain was over within a day and they only had normal cold symptoms left. We were instructed to do the same as you but boiled 2 large pots of water on the stove for a couple of hours through out the day and especially at night. Our son had it bad and that helped a lot. Also taking them outside into the cold air helps a lot too. If it doesn't get to cold at night in FL then maybe have them breathe in the freezer for a few minutes for a similar effect.
Our friends daughter also got it and she was given prednisone. She had several more nights of suffering before the bad cough went away.
I would look into acid reflux. Google it and see what symptoms match your child's. Any new changes in diet or lifestyle? Allergies can cause those symptoms but 1 year is young for them to show.
Good luck!
When I was young and had the croup, my mother used to take me in the bathroom, shut the door, turn the shower on hot and let me breathe the steam. She said it worked wonders....good luck.
My now 5 yo gets this every April like clockwork due to intense allergies (pollen is at it's peak this month). We have a nebulizer and were prescribed albuterol which helps emensely for the late night attacks. The first 2-3 nights are always the worst, so we nebulize 3-4 times per day, once just before bed. This often helps prevent the late night attacks. It will get better, and prednisone usually helps, but check with your ped to see if nebulizer treatments could be beneficial as well. Good luck and I hope everyone is feeling better and getting more sleep soon!
Letting them sleep at an angle helps , not easy I know at this young age but maybe try putting some folded blankets under the crib mattress?
My pediatrician mentioned that cold air helps constrict the swelling, so taking him outside should help, if it's cold. I live in Florida. Not cold. My ped mentioned that you could hold him in front of your open freezer so he can inhale the cold air. Obviously I am not saying to put your baby in a freezer, but holding him over your shoulder and letting him breathe in the cold air could help.
i've never tried this but my son's preschool teacher (who has three kids of her own) swears by corn syrup. she says it really works. good luck, i hope this passes quickly!
Unfortunately, I think you're doing all the right things. Our daughter had croup last year, and those were all the things the pediatrician recommended.
I'm not sure if this will help, but it's what the American Academy of Pediatrics has listed for treatment on their parenting website:

Hope he gets to feeling better soon.
honey, elderberry syrup, a lot of water, and an elevated head when sleeping
