After I had my son, I went on the BCP that you only have 3 periods a year with. After about 2 months I started cramping and spotting real bad. I took myself off the pill and didn't have a period for about 4 months after that. When I did get it it only lasted maybe 3 days and was light. I haven't had one in about 4 months now. I do still have cramps a bit, but other than that nothing. I was told the same thing. My son is also 2 years old and I have been told by a few mothers that they did the same thing. I don't know about you, but I'm enjoying my freedom.

Yes, the exact same thing happened to me, right after I went off the pill, could that be it? I had been on the mini pill, and i never got a period, and then i went off of it, and still nothing for 3 months. I must have taken 5 pregnancy tests, but they all were negative. After a little over 3 months, it did come back, and with a vengeance! I think when you worry, it throws your body off a little, too. Are you by any chance, still nursing? I heard that can make your cycle funny, too. I don't know, but it's probably nothing to worry about. Good luck!

I've always been pretty irregular. Most doctors want you to have a period at least every three months but I've gone as long as four before. Some women just work that way. Hormones change all the time. Stress and diet can be a big factor - new job, move, any of that - sometimes things settle back out to regular but other times this is the new regular.
Good luck!

My sister had this happen to her recently. She wasn't taking birth control, so the doctor put her on birth control to regulate her period. It worked, she hasn't had any problems since.

Hi M.,
Don't worry too much I went through the same thing when I was 29 years old. It is due to hormone changes. Although you are no where near menopause years, you are nearing thirty and your body is making suttle changes in regards to our biological clocks. Some of us do experience changes in our cycles where we have very very light or virtually no cycles at all. Now my physician told me it was normal but did not want me to go longer than 4 months at the time without a cycle. So he ended up putting me on hormones for about a month and that jump started my system and I started having regular periods again. He told me just to continue to watch myself and if I neared 4 months without a period to restart the hormones. After that initial jump start I never had to take them again. I am now 38. I hope this helps.

I think someone else mentioned this, but it's possible it could be Polysistic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) or it could be just having a newborn baby. You can never be too careful, might want to get it check out by your OB doctor. Also, after birthing a baby, your body goes through weird things that never happened before, so it could be a result of just hormones off (I had Post Pardum--didn't diagnose me until 7 months old!)--I've been on Prozac since to regulate my saratonin (sp?) levels so I don't get so irritable, with having such an active ornery son! ;)

Excessive exercising and low calorie diets could also cause this. My sister had hers stop and she is someone who watches what she eats and does a large amount of daily exercising.

My son is 3months old and I havent had a period since I had him. My doctor told me to take a pregnancy test, which I have not done, and if it came back negative then he will start me on Prolixin Dosepak which is kinda like birth control. Then if I do not start within ten days they say something is wrong. Just thought I would share with you the problems I am experiencing as well.

i went 2 months without my period last year which is very unusual for me. it was right when i was trying to sell my house, was getting ready to move and quit my job so the doctors blamed it on hormones. if you have alot of changes going on in your life it could be from that.

my doctor also did an ultrasound to rule out cysts on my ovaries. this may be something that you want to talk to your doctor about.

Hey M. I've had something similar to what you described, I have a 3 year old and after he was born I went 8 months with out a period and recently my last period was Novemer '06, I've been to atleast 6 doctors have had blood work everytime, I even paid out of pocket for a ultra sound and exrays on my uterus (my insurance only covered $200 of the over $1000 nice right) and everything came back normal. Well I'll be 26 years old this year and I refuse to believe that everything is okay so everyday I do my own research and last week I came across a science website that suggested my "symptoms" could be second anemorrhea(primary anemorreah is when your period doesn't start by age 16, second is when you miss a period for 3 months or more) please do search and see if it applies to you I have an appointment scheduled with a new OBGYN and I'm taking a few print outs with me to go over with her to see if it applies to me. Good luck and I hope everything is okay!

Hi when I was 18 my period stopped for 3 months. I was told my body had basically went into shock over something that was new in my life and my period hybernated in order to conserve energy. the something new was I had joined the Army and was in basic training they gave me a shot rebooted my period so to speak and everything went back to normal.

Hi M.. I actually had a similar experience after I had my tubes tied. I went to see my GYN, because I was paranoid about the changes in the hormones, and that the operation might not have taken.

She suprisingly was not very concerned. She said it was just a hormone imbalance that could have been brought on by anything (stress, diet, etc.) and recommended B.C. pills to regulate my periods.

I didn't take them, becasue she assured me that the operation was effective, but maybe that's something you would want to try?

Good luck.

I have had this happen before during times of high stress. Stress evidently can alter your hormone levels, and it can cause an absence of your period.

Oddly enough (and this is going to sound really strange), I also had this happen with all three of one of my friend's pregnancies. I was missing my period and having morning sickness before she told me her news, and as soon as she told me, my body would return to normal. I laugh at how I knew before she told me. I've read before that your body can sometimes be in tune with those you are close to, and that sometimes your periods will even start to work out where you were on the same cycles as your closest friends. Surprisingly, I think it's true. My three closest friends and I are all on the same cycle! So maybe your body is just in tune with someone you are really close to, as well. lol

Hi M.,

This sort of thing happened to me all the time from the ages of 15 till just prior to having my daughter. Mine was caused from PCOS. Basically, I was creating and storing too much testosterone in my system. To be certain, have your doctor run a simple blood test to check. It can be corrected with a small pill taken daily.

Good luck,
T.

Hi M.,

I have been in a similar situation. I have had PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome)for a number of years. My periods are very irregular, and have been since I was about 25. I am now 40, and although the doctors tell me that I am too young to be going through menopause, I know that I am because it runs early in our family. I also have hot flashes and night sweats. However, I doubt if that is a problem with you, although it could be. I would schedule a complete physical with a gynocologist, and be sure to tell her that you are having this problem. She can prescribe primarin for you. It is a form of progesterone, the hormone the body produces when it is not pregnant. You only take it 12 days a month, and that is only when you have not had a period for 40 or so days. I have used it before, but now I just don't bother. I had my tubes tied when my youngest daughter (now 17) was a baby, so I don't worry about pregnancy. Your gynocologist may also want to do a laproscopy or other tests to make sure you don't have endometriosis. And as several of the other ladies mention, it could be caused by stress.

I hope this helps, and I hope that when your doctor digs a little deeper, it turns out to be nothing much.

I know that an elevated dhea level can cause it. This is also associated with polycystic ovary syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Have you recently gained weight (primarily in your mid-section)?
