Currently pregnant...why Is Sleeping on Your Back Bad?

I've been hearing that sleeping on your back is not good, but I'm worried because when I go to bed, I start on my side, but then somehow in the middle of the night, I end up sleeping on my back and wake up that way. I haven't felt any discomfort. No tingling or numbness...will I know that this is dangerous? Is this affecting my baby? Or what should I be doing to keep myself from rolling over?

What can I do next?

They say you should sleep on your left side because it promotes the best circulation. I always tried to go to bed on my left side but pretty much always ended up on my back. Initially, I freaked out too (I'm a first time mom too) but in the end of your pregnancy, you will just sleep how it's most comfortable. I never had numbness on my back - just sometimes lower back pain and general discomfort, so I would move to my side. Your body will tell you! In the meantime, you can try pillows to prop you. Good luck!

I think as you get bigger it is more of a problem, because the weight of the baby and your belly on that artery or vein (I can't remember which) can get compressed (like the other mom said) and your blood flow to the baby can get constricted. But I think it is still too early to worry about that. Maybe in your 7th or 8th month it is more of a concern. But if you wake up and you are on your back, don't worry too much about it. Just roll back on to your side. Good luck! And Congratulations!

There are pregnancy pillows u can buy. They are really comfy and are designed to help u sleep on your side. It's like a twisted body pillow that helps offer support in the right spots. Check them out online. I had one and it really helped. Good luck

Sleep where you're comfortable! At this point in your pregnancy, it's not a worry. At the end, there is a vein that can be compressed by you sleeping on your back--but I would be VERY surprised if you're comfortable that way much past the beginning of May.
And congratulations!

Congratulations! You don't have anything to worry about right now. Due to gravity, sleeping on your back allows your baby, etc to compress the arteries and veins running through your spinal cord, which can decrease blood flow through the placenta. I was worried because I would always fall asleep on my side, but wake up on my back. However, my midwives and OB both told me that as long as sleeping on my back didn't cause pain, I should be fine. Hope that helps!

I asked my doctor about this and he said not to worry about it and that I should sleep in whatever way is comfortable for me. Enjoy your pregnancy!!
