Cutting Daughters Hair

My 3rd old daughter has hair down to the middle of her back. Its still baby fine but curly. She has no split ends or anything, its very healthy. I was wondering if I would trim it ( no more than in inch... if that) would it help get rid of the baby fine and thicken it up some?

With my boys it wasn't until after their first hair cut between 1-2 that their hair lost the fineness. Or will her hair eventually thicken on its own? By thicken I mean necessarily become thick but just loose that fineness like a newborns.. cause that is still how her hair is. Her hair has never been trimmed at all other than her bangs.

She loves to have me do her hair, but with how fine it is it just falls out with in about an hour unless I plaster it with hairspray or put in alot of gel its almost hard. Its even hard for the little girls no tangle bands to keep her hair in a simply pony with out falling out.

Thanks

So What Happened?

Thank you.
We do do alot of braids, she loves french and herring bone braids. Once in a while its a pony or pig tails but not very often. Even with the braids the hair slips out and is so messy looking right away. I didn't know if trimming it ( I would never cut it short) would help since it seemed like the boys hair changed after their first hair cut. But I will leave well enough alone, she has very pretty hair even if it is messy and wont stay in place :)

Hello,
trimming her hair will definitely not change the fineness of it, sorry to say. It's quite common for a child at 3 to still have that baby soft/baby fine hair. Just give it a few more years; yes, it will lose that very fine texture on it's own. (former hair stylist here :)

Some kids keep the fineness longer than others. With my youngest she was around eight before her hair had any thickness but it is still soft fine hair. Everyone else has course hair and for them the baby fine hair was gone by a year old.

So I guess I am saying give it time. I cut my younger daughters hair a lot and nothing but time made it change.

I think it will thicken up on it's own.

In the meantime, I would suggest trying Blue Magic Hair Conditioner. It think it may be made for ethnic hair, but I use it on my granddaughter's hair and I love it. I started using it because her hair was also find and would not stay. The Blue Magic not only conditions the hair and makes it soooo soft and smell soooo good, but it helps it to stay where you put it! It doesn't dry hard like hairspray or other products. An added bonus is that because it coats the hair strands, it doubles as a lice repellant because the little beggars can't attach their eggs to the hair shaft.

It's a win-win solution!

Her hair sounds so much like one of my granddaughter's, it was so fine, even wispy, and wouldn't stay in a a pony or pigtails or braids, even plastered with gel or sprays, just slipped out. (And everyone else in our family has thick hair from the get-go!)

I did start trimming it when she was about 2.5 to 3, about three inches the first time, and kept the trimming up for years, but it truly didn't begin to really thicken up until she was about 6.5 or so. Since ponies or braids were a complete wash I compromised and kept her bangs trimmed and the rest down (used lots of headbands) to keep focus on the front, then when she was around 7 or 8 she decided she wanted all her hair to be one length. Now that she is almost 11 her hair is considerably thicker than it once was, and a little past the middle of her back, but really is not what you would call thick. It's comparable in thickness (and color, which is why I thought of her) as Cameron Diaz's.

Personally, I didn't see that trimming ever helped it to thicken, she's never lost the fineness though it isn't baby fine, it just kept it neater.

I would suggest trying to use the very tiny actual non-cloth covered bands, we got a box of them at WalMart that are multi colors, and they are more plasticy than actual rubber, and they don't tangle much, but stay in place better than the cloth covered ones.

Goody makes some, that are called ouchless elastics: http://www.amazon.com/GOODY-Elastic-Band-52-pcs/dp/B00122...

Also try the no slippy hair clippy: http://www.hairclippy.com/baby-toddler

Also, try elastic headbands with bow/clips on them for decoration.

Good Luck - cutting will not change the hair, not that the trim will be bad, they just have to grow into bigger people hair...

It is what it is, use water/gel spray to style her hair and try braids vs ponies.
