Cyproheptadine/ethosuximide/breast Buds to Early?

Hello! My daughter is taking this med (cyproheptadine/Periactin) for an appetite stimulant. The first time she was on it, around a year ago, she got swollen glands under her areolas. They went away after she had been on the med for a while. We have now really upped her dose and they have come back, but bigger. Like true breast buds! She is now 9, but the Dr. has already been worried about her having late puberty because she is so small and doesn't gain weight. Just doesn't feel right that she should have this already. I think it is from the medicine. Anyone else have an opinion or experience with that happening from a med? Oh, she is also taking ethosuximide for epilepsy.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Marda: Of course the Dr. prescribed this! It is a prescription drug! She is under weight and has trouble gaining, that is why she is taking it! I have already called the doc and I am waiting for her to call back on Monday. Just wanted to get some feed back from other moms!

Probably doesn't have anything to do with meds. She is at the age for this to start happening.

I was in an a cup and needed it at 9 and had my period at 10. I was thin and healthy and completely normal for generations of women in my family. Breast buds at 9 are very normal.

Precocious puberty is under 8yo. Girls typically get their periods 2 - 2 1/2 years after breast buds develop . I think this is perfectly normal.

This is a question for her doctor. Why is she taking the appetite stimulant? Has her doctor prescribed it? If so, is the side affects acceptable considering the alternative of not taking it? If he's not prescribed it then she maybe shouldn't be taking it. Either way it's essential that you discuss this with her doctor.

I think what you are talking about are the little buds that come prior to puberty. I developed mine in 4th grade which is around the age of 9. I was always under weight but healthy it is just the way I have always been. Still am petite and thin. I was never put on anything. My daughter is 10 and I can see she is getting little boobs. She is thicker boned and a little chunky. She takes after my husbands family. But this is normal development. My neice was a chunk as well. She got her period at 11 which my sister and I thought was early. We both got ours at 13. But as soon as she got her period she thinned right out and is now skinny skinny. So I do not know anything about those meds. But I think the breast buds are normal. Any swelling I would check with the doctor.

I was an A cup at age 9. Not buds. Boobs.

______

In my Scandinavian family...

Round 1 (9-12) ...We tend to be done with height & an homage to boobs & hips by 12. Yep. That meant I was 6 feet tall in middle school. Joy. :P also about 100-120 pounds / aka seriously underweight (175 is rock star bikini weight for me, 120 you can see my hipsockets and I look like concentration camp girl) / BUT totally normal for my family's growth cycle. We shoot up THEN fill out.

Round 2 (16-19)... And then fill in w/ bigger cups, bigger hips (bigger everything) in highschool.

Periods can start with EITHER Round 1 or Round 2. Mine was at 9, my sister' sat 17.

___________

My NON-Scandinavian family was completely freaked out with those of us who were developing along totally normal lines for us... As they were completely abnormal for them.

America really is a genetic stew.

When we're lucky, our kids follow our own patterns, so we're comfy with their growth. When we're not, and they're following the French, Scan, Russian, Asian, whatever grandparent, while we patterned after someone else (or worse, our kids follow along dad's genetic heritage!) it can Just. Feel. Wrong.

Doesn't mean it is.
Doesn't mean it isn't... But do look at both sides of her family to see if developing at 9 is normal for one of your heritage groups.
