Just wondering if you were able to eat yogurt or cheese when doing a dairy exclusion while nursing? I've heard some people can and I'm just looking for your experience, if you care to share. What difference did you notice in your baby while you did it?

Thanks!
T.

So What Happened?

Also, can you tell me what happened when you would eat dairy (how you knew), and how soon it would happen after eating? Thanks!

I couldn't have any dairy. Even a small sample size bite of coffee cake (eaten by me) made my baby break out in eczema. There are a couple of really good dairy-free cheeses available, Teez from Chicago Soy Dairy and Daiya, which is also soy-free. You can get them at Whole Foods.

For me, I realized that I had better health, too, when I gave up dairy. I don't struggle with asthma any more, even though I used to have pretty nasty attacks about 3 times a year for my whole life until I changed my diet. So, you might see an unexpected bonus, too.

My son is highly allergic to dairy, though I did not know this when I nursed him. I am currently pregnant with # 2, so I asked my son's allergist about cutting out dairy while nursing. He said that if I was going to do it, I needed to do it 100% or it wouldn't make any difference. This included not only cheese and yogurt, but absolutely any product that lists milk (or whey or casein) as an ingredient. Things may be different if your baby is just gassy or fussy, but if an allergy is the problem, then that's the advice I received. Good luck.

I couldn't. I found that goat milk products in moderation seemed to be ok. (so goat's cheese and pure goats milk feta - that was such a treat!)After a year of no diary, i started with a splash of milk in my coffee and by 14 months could eat yogurt and cottage cheese.

Usually - by dairy - it's cow's milk products in general. And to be honest - even if your child wasn't as sensitive to your consumption of it - it would probably just be a matter of time before it built up and had effects. If you know your baby has a sensitivity - just let it go for as long as possible and be proud of your commitment and this gift that you can offer your child. A year or so for you vs. a life time allergy or intestinal problems for them....

good job mama...

I couldn't do it. My daughter had a high pitched scream and had green leafy diapers if I had dairy. There is coconut milk yogurt which is yummy. The cheese was really hard for me b.c I love cheese. I was able to eat goat cheese. Frequently milk allergy/sensitivity goes hand in hand with Soy, so you might need to keep track of that too. Good luck, it's a total pain in the you know what. The upside was I lost all the baby weight and then some very quickly! Wish I had the resolve that I did then. It's amazing what us moms will do for our angels.
