Dandruff Problem

This is embarrassing because it's never happened to me. I've always had a clean scalp because I washed my hair every day. As I've gotten older, my hair has gotten frizzier & drier, so I've started only washing it every 2 or 3 days. It's really helped, but the problem is that I'm getting drandruff really bad in my hair. When I do wash it, I scrub my scalp, but it just seems to stir it up. So when I comb my wet hair, I have to spend several minutes picking out dandruff.

Is there anything else I can do? Does Selsun Blue work on this?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

When I have dandruff flare-ups, I use Neutrogena T-Gel and Head and Shoulders silky something-or-other conditioner. I didn't know until recently that it's important to use a dandruff-helping conditioner; otherwise, your normal conditioner will wash out the medication from the dandruff shampoo. The Head and Shoulders conditioner leaves my hair healthier looking and feeling than my regular conditioner, too! Good luck!!

Neutrogena T-Gel or Nizoral work great, as does Head & Shoulders. I use H&S every time I wash my hair and when I have really bad flair-ups, I'll use something stronger once or twice a week (like T-Gel or Nizoral). It's important to note that dandruff can be caused by different things - it could just be dry, flaky scalp (like eczema) or it could be a bacterial or fungal infection. If it gets to be really bad (crusty or very large flakes or very itchy), you might want to see you doctor or dermatologist about it.

If you use shampoos like Head & Shoulders, you don't want to scrub a lot because that will only make things worse (as you've discovered). Just make sure you work the shampoo all the way to the roots everywhere on your head and then make sure that it all rinses out well too.

Also, try not to let your wet hair stay wet in a pony tail or big clip - keeping wet hair for long times can trip your scalp of all that moisture and make things worse.

I have psoriasis and I use the T-gel extra strength shampoo and it is amazing! I normally flare up when it gets cold, and the shower water gets hotter and hotter... that T-gel always works for me. Just be sure to use it at least two to three times a week and then you will notice you don' t need anymore.
Good Luck!

Hi J.. My husband has extremely thick hair and tends to get dandruff pretty easily. He uses Head and Shoulders every day and never gets it anymore. In the winter I get dry scalp so I will use his shampoo once or twice a week and it really helps.

Use products designed to contol frizzing. My daughter uses Pantene for curls, I use Tresemme anti-frizz or whatever it is, and we both use Fructis spray gell. My daughter has problems with dandruff so she also uses the Neutrogena T-Gel, my sister-in-law is a hairdresser and recommended it. We did try to Wal-Mart brand and she said it did not seem to work as well.

If your hair is naturally curly, don't ever brush or comb it unless it is wet. Use a pic and also keep a spray bottle with water around. Often when my seems to frizz a bit during the day, if I spritz it with water and scrunch it a bit it takes the frizzy look away.

I have tried many products but not any more. My hair stylist suggested Redken's Scalp Relief and I LOVE it. I have only used it since...no issues anymore. I buy the LARGE bottles and they last me almost a year, so although they are not cheap, they are worth it...the shampoo and conditioner. It works. If I feel my hair is dry I rotate shampoo one day, conditioner the next, and so forth. It is really great and has allowed me to not be afraid to where dark colors anymore. I actually forget that I had this issue.

My 14 yr old daughter went through a period with dandruff and it drove her nuts. You know how teens are with appearance so this really irked her.

Her hair does have color on it so we used one of the dandruff shampoos that was ok with color treated hair.

We also talked to the her stylist and realized.....she showered every night and washed her hair. According to the stylist, when you tie your hair back and go to bed with it wet, it creates more problems with dandruff.

After using the dandruff shampoo and drying her hair before bed, she has not had any more problems. She does use the dandruff shampoo about once a week. She also uses a Chi flat iron most every day.

My husband uses the regular head and shoulders and swears by it. It is the only shampoo he uses.

Good luck to you.
