Dariy/Soy Allergy

My 7 week old son recently started having blood in his stool. My pediatrician said it is caused from the dairy/soy that I am eating. Since I am nursing, I have cut out ALL dariy/soy from my diet. It has been three weeks now and he still has blood about two or three times a week. Also his stool went from the mustard yellow, to dark yellow and even various shades of green, sometimes with mucus in it. My pediatrician would not run any tests, saying he is confident that he is right. I am worried sick about my baby. Has anyone experienced anything like this before? If so PLEASE email with your experience.

What can I do next?

I am not sure what other moms have said. I don't know much about allergies but I know A LOT about pediatricians. The one thing that I really want to stress to you is that if YOU are worried, you have the right to tell your pediatrician that YOU want your baby tested. It is not the pediatricians right to tell you not to worry that he is right. I have heard that before and they are NOT ALWAYS RIGHT. If he won't test, tell him that is was sure a pleasure having him as a doctor but that you will be taking your son somewhere else from now on. YOU are the MOM and YOU have the instinct to follow. Don't be afraid to follow that mommy instinct. It is usually right and any doctor worth their beans will tell you the same. Hope this helps and gives you some courage!
Good Luck

My son had green poop with mucus in it as an infant. He also had terrible pain in his belly with lots of crying throughout the day and occasionally some blood in his stool. I tried cutting almost everything from my diet, but nothing helped (just starved me to death). Ended up taking him to Dr. Henry Thompson, pediatric gastrointerologist here in Boise. He figured out his issue (anal stenosis-had nothing to do with my diet). Bottom line - get an opinion from a doctor specializing in this area. I highly recommend Dr Thompson.

Although I haven't had this particular problem with my 19 month old, I totally agree with the other two comments! If you're nursing and it just isn't working, I don't care what everyone else says, it's not going to hurt your baby to ween. I'm not saying you have to, but if it's an option, don't be afraid of it. Your baby doesn't know the difference. The only thing they'll notice is if they're getting fuller easier. And I would absolutly take him to another doctor. Remember, your doctor is working for you. You're paying for it. What you say goes, you're the mom. "Go the the matresses" with your baby. If I hadn't done it, I would never have found the intestinal bacterial infection my daughter had. We save her from going into the hospital by days. She's great now, but the point is that you are the mom and Doctors (are wonderful but) have bills to pay too. Just remember, you're the boss. Good luck!

This happened with my son, the pediactric gastro basically agreed with the lactation consultant and said that he was allergic to the proteins in milk going into my breast milk. I did what you did and stopped all my consumption of milk and soy and began drinking rice milk. You should call a lactation consultant as well as a pediactric gastro. Just becareful when weaning, unless your going to goat milk, the formulas are milk based or soy based and the special formulas can get really expensive. My son still has food allergies and it causes his eczema and diaper rash, but at 17 months he is doing better. Our next step is either allergy test with an allergist (which I dread) or accupressure. Good luck!

It sounds to me like he might actually have a stomach virus. Have tried drinking alot of water so that maybe your fluids are more clear or changing your intake of milk/soy. Maybe he is allergic to something that you are eating. Maybe you could try a second opinion. I have six children and we see Dr. Mark Rutherford on Boise Ave. He has been our doctor for years and I trust him greatly. Hope this helps. ____@____.com

Take your baby to another doctor. Whether your doctor is correct or not, that he completely disregards your concerns is a problem.

Blood in the stools can be a sign of many issues, although it may be completely benign as well. The only way to know for sure is to find someone that will run some tests on your baby.

Do not take what this doctor says as gospel... he is a person too and is capable of making prideful (and potentially dangerous) mistakes. Take care of your baby.

Good luck.

My 3 month old had the same thing happen! It is my second child and it came as a surprise. I cut out dairy and soy for 2 months and she still had the green, mucusy, bloody stools. I took her to a pediatric gastroenterology nurse practicianer that we had taken our first born to (For different problems). She did stool studies on her for bacteria and everthing came back normal so she had me completely eliminate all of the common allergens from my diet. That meant no dairy, soy, nuts, corn, wheat, fish or eggs. I will tell you that it sucked, but I lost a bunch of weight! There are hypoallergenic formulas that you can try too, some in the store and some by prescription. I ultimately have decided to do that because the diet was really hard to stick to. People can judge me all they want, but that was my decision. She is doing much better. I feel bad that she suffered for so long. Anyway, the nurse practicianer that we go to is in the Idaho Pediatric Gastroenterology clinic in Boise and her name is Barbie Doherty. I LOVE HER! I wish she was a pediatrician. If you just want to stick with your doctor, tell your pediatrician that you want stool studies done to rule out an infection just to give you peace of mind. If he/she wont do it then you need to find a new one that will listen to you. It is ok to be worried about your baby and they should understand that.

It sounds like your baby could have multiple food allergies like mine and you need to get them out of their system for a period of time so that their immune system can sort of re-set itself. Then they can be reintroduced.

Good luck with everything and I hope it all gets worked out. I know it is hard not knowing what is going on with your baby when they are so little.

Take him somewhere for a second opinion. If your pediatrician won't run tests, take him to one who will listen to you and to your concerns. Green stools with mucus can be a sign of infection and blood in the stools at any time is not something to ignore. Listen to your instincts--you may be a new mom but you are the one who is most in tune with your baby and you are not stupid--don't let any doctor make you feel that way. If you had said you were from Nampa, I could probably guess who the pediatrician is.
Another thing to avoid in your diet when nursing is any food product, especially diet soda, that has nutrasweet in it.
