Darvocet and Breastfeeding

When my son was born, the hospital also prescribed this for me, short term. They said it was ok while breastfeeding.

I had a similar story while breastfeeding not only during breastfeeding but my hole pregnancy. I had multiple problems during pregnancy the worst was PseudoTumor Cerebri. Well it is hard to pronounce it's no joke my brain swelling from spinal fluid building up. The main thing was my brain was telling my body I had a tumor and my body was trying to rid my body of said tumor better known as BABY... Well 9 months of major pain swelling and headaches I took a vast pharmacy with me to every Dr's visit.. O.K. I took vicodin and codeine also darvocet and darvon many different names all the same derivative codeine for pain it works to. Well needless to say Katie will be 3 in 10 days she is fine nothing wrong with her at all. So yes I took them and I had no problems at all with her or I. I had to take Davocet for migraines also while I was breastfeeding, although it was years ago now but they always told me that I couldn't take one of them and then 1/2 to an hour later feed the baby, I had to wait atleast 2 hours to feed the baby otherwise the baby would get some of the drug too. I would always keep a can of formula available just incase I had one and then soon after the baby was hungry. They also told me to watch the baby and if He was getting kind of groggy after I fed him then he was getting some of the meds. I just always used the formula to be on the safe side.

Does your OB realize that you're nursing? I wouldn't take any med that you couldn't take while you were pregnant.

I would talk to your pharmacist. They are pretty good with knowing the side effects. We have a wonderful one at Walgreens. He knows everything that everyone is taking in the family. He lets us know if something will have a counter-reaction. So that would be my best advise. Also if you are nervous about taking this medicine, talk to your doctor.

I just stopped breastfeeding but I know it is ok to use that~I used it when I fell and hurt my back this last summer!! I didn't use it for long~ but my baby girl is doing fine!!

If you have to use it~ then use it~ but don't get down on yourself if you have to!! I know how hard it is when you are breastfeeding~ you just can't take anything!!

Try feverfew, an herbal extract and I encourage you to read the book, Your Body's Many Cries for Water by Dr. F. Batmanghelidj as there is information about migraines and other physical problems we often treat with drugs unnecessarily. This book is the result of 20 years of research. I had severe headaches after my first child and was prescribed Darvocet and later found out they were from the Epideral I recieved during labor. they made me take the meds but not allow me to breast feed because anything you take in your baby gets through your milk, I think you should get a second opinion because you should always be safe for you and your baby. If it puts your mind at ease at all, this is the pain med they gave me in the hospital when my son was born. They fully knew I was nursing and told me not to worry. Granted, I couldn't do any research from the hospital or I would have, but my ob who is overly-cautious to the extreme said it was fine so I trusted her. Also, I think I only received 2 doses of it, so I'm not sure about long-term... I would guess your dosage for migraines would be even less than what they gave me in the hospital, but again I wasn't on it long term so I didn't bother to research it...

I would definately talk to your pediatrician - not the nurse but to the doctor. I had been perscribed muscle relaxers (for an injury) and spoke with the wrong person and after the fact my pediatrician said she could have suggested something that would have worked and not interfered with nursing.

I am shocked that a Dr. would tell you it's ok to take pain meds while breastfeeding!! As a biochemist, I can tell you that this is not a good idea. I recommend chiropractic care. In Traverse City, Hullman Family Chiropractic specializes in women and infants/children. Another possible cause of the migraines is a hormone imbalance, especially just after giving birth. My daughter is 2 months old, and since her birth I have experienced migraines (which I haven't had in 12 years!). I found that drinking raspberry leaf tea helps with balancing the hormones, and so does licorice root. Those are my 2 favorites and have helped immensely. They are completely safe to have while breastfeeding. And if you can, get massages regularly. Wouldn't we all love that!! (some health insurances cover it). Hope you feel better soon!

I took Darvocet for a month while nursing my newborn daughter. It was given to me while in the hospital, and I was assured that we would both be fine. My daughter is almost 2 now and we are both doing great.
