Daughter Clearing Throat and White Spot in Throat

Hi everyone, my 7 yo daughter came down with a mild cold last week that lasted a couple of days (she had no fever, no cough, just runny nose and sneezing). Now, this week she started with just a cough and now she keeps clearing her throat and when I looked I noticed a white spot on the side of her throat. She says it doesn't hurt and she seems perfectly fine (eating, running around, no fever, etc). I am thinking about taking her to an ENT doctor next week if it doesn't get any better. Any ideas what this could be? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I've never heard of tonsil stones, that's definitely a possibility. If she still has this over the weekend I think I will take her to a regular clinic to get a strep test. Her pediatrician is about 40 min away from her school (she's very good!) but I'd rather her not have to miss school and drive that far just for a strep test. I'm hoping it is just allergies since we have all had them really bad this year! Thanks again!

Probably a tonsil stone and isn't related to the cold. Children get tonsil stones often, as their tonsils are larger and usually more pitted. As they get older, the tonsils shrink and they sometimes go away. The cold and clearing of throat is probably drainage. I would see the pediatrician first, then a specialist if needed.

I wonder if the white spot could be a tonsil stone?

Sometimes they do cause soreness, but usually aren't serious, and do go away....

google tonsil stone or tonsillolith....

ETA to add.... it doesn't hurt to get it checked for strep.... I had one daughter with a sore throat, and sure enough, without fever, it WAS strep....

Good suggestion to get it checked out just in case. However, the cough and clearing her throat could also be a post-nasal drip caused by the previous cold, or allergies.....

I get tonsil stones quite often because of sinus drainage. They usually come out on their own after a bit of throat clearing. Be warned though...they smell TERRIBLE! My doctor described it to me as the same process as an oyster making a pearl. Gross, sorry.

My daughter just had the same thing...a mild cold...no fever but kept clearing her throat. Doctor told me over the phone that it didn't sound like strep. I brought her in and had her tested anyway...it was strep.

Good point, Malia... I'd also want to have her checked for strep. Strep doesn't always present with a fever or sore throat...

I would have her tested for strep. My daughter was like this the last 4 times she tested positive. No fever. No soreness. Just a running facet and light cough that OTC medicines didn't help.

Sounds like a tonsil stone. My 17 yr old gets them a lot, especially during allergy season and when she has a lot of drainage.

I've had a cold and then white spots on my throat. The doctor said they're a viral infection and there is nothing to be done about it. You just have to wait until your system gets rid of it.

White spot is usually strep throat. Everytime my and I get strep throat we get white spots in the mouth. Strep is highly contagious. I would take her to the doctor to be sure.
