My one year old DD somehow has caught a cold. Seems strange to complain, but I keep her away from sick ppl, grocery stores, malls etc, we arent sick, only her, im still breastfeeding & so srprised she is ill. She is so congested in her little nose, and cant really suck her soother or anything, wont let me clean her nose, nevermind try to suction it. She has had the worst fitfull sleep, and Im at a loss. Its been so many years since Ive had a sick baby! What do you do to ease the runny nose & discomfort? what about the soother, she loves that thing, but I think thats why she keeps waking up, she cant suck AND breathe. She slept about an hour, sort of propped on my shoulder, but what else? is a pillow to elavate her ok at 1 year? Is there any point in going to a dr for a cold? (we rarely take her in to a dr, even for check ups, she has been very healthy)

What can I do next?

Humidifier and suction... I'm not sure what you mean by "won't let you". In this case, hold her down and suction her nose! It will help her sleep, eat and drink. My son HATES it, but if we don't suction his nose when he gets a cold, he develops an ear infection (per the doctor).

Not a reason for a doctor visit, unless she has a fever. She's too young for OTC meds, so really all you can do is humidify, suction and yes elevate her pillow. We also use the baby saline spray to get all of the boogies out!

Use a humifier in her room at night to help. Suction her nose whether she likes it or not - worse thing that will happen is that she will cry and that might loosen the stuff up!

My DD got her first cold when she was 9 months and it sucked but we all survived. What we did every night until she was better (about 2 weeks) was to give her a nice warm bath (this also helps to loosen the boogies) and we used Johnsons vapo bath to open her nasal passage (this stuff works awesome) then we would suction her nose in the tub and try again right before we put her to bed. We also gave her a nice massage using Johnsons night time cream and then gave her her night time bottle in a (curved bottle) the ones that are bent to help with air flow (this helped her to eat better because she couldnt breathe well out her nose.) Hydrasense makes this suction as well that sounds disgusting but works really well. Its a plastic bulb at one end with a filter and then there is a hose/tube that you suck into to pull the boogies out. I know - like I said its gross but it works. We also propped her crib up using rolled up towels under the head of her crib. And finally like suggested by the other mommies, we always use a humidifier in her room but the one we have has a little slot in the front for a vicks vapo pad that fills the air with the scent to help them breathe better. Oh and they now sell a vapo rub for babies. Its not the same as vicks vapo rub but it has the soothing scent.
Good Luck and I hope she is feeling better real soon

I agree with others, you need to suction her nose, they don't like it but it doesn't hurt them and it will help her breath, sleep better and prevent ear infections. The humidifier is also helpful. I wouldn't worry about bringing her to the doctor unless you notice her pulling at her ear or excessive crying which could indicate an ear infection. Hope she feels better soon!

You can roll up a couple of towels and put under her mattress to elevate her in bed instead of using a pillow. Also use a humidifier, or the Vicks Vaporizer really does well. And, like the others said, you will have to suction her nose. Of course she doesn't like it, but it is the only way to get the snot out of her nose since she can't "blow" her nose.

All these ideas work really well, and sometimes if I have a hard time sucking out my daughter's nose, (if the mucus is dry or "stuck" to her nostrils) I use the Little Noses saline and put a couple of drops in each nostril- wait about 10 seconds and sucking it out is so much easier! Babies don't like the aspirator, but honestly you just have to hold them still and do it! She will feel so much better and will probably be able to get better sleep.
