Daughter Is Grinding Teeth... How to Stop?

My 13-month old daughter is making the most horrible noise with her teeth - I don't think she's grinding them. Whatever she's doing sounds like she's crunching a piece of hard candy. Aside from the noise being unbearable, I'm worried that she will damage her teeth. Any suggestions on how to get her to stop doing this? Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of your comments/advice. I'm glad to know this is so common! I guess I will just have to bear with it, since it sounds like this is something that she will outgrow (hopefully soon!!). Thanks again!! :)

My son whos is 12 1/2 montsh old soes teh same thing, I was readingthat you shoudl not pay attention to it and eventually they will stop. If we focus on teh teeth grinding, they will use it as an attention grabber and do it more often!

Hope this helps.

My son did the same thing after his top and bottom teeth came in. If is a horrible sound and drove me crazy. Everytime I caught him doing it I told him no and gave him something else to chew on or play with. He either lost interest or grew out of it because after a month or so he stopped completely! Hope you have the same results!!

Oh yeah she's grinding them. I was going to ask my dentist tomorrow because my 22 month old is still doing it and moreso now at night. I will post if he gives me any good ideas.

I don't know how it works with infants, but it isn't something that can be controlled. My husband does it and I have asked the dentist about it and the most they can do is provide a guard that fits in the mouth to stop from damaging the teeth, but she may be too young for that. You may want to contact your dentist and ask.

She's teething :-) Give her some chewy things to chomp on that will help the urge to rub her gums together. You might have to look around for something long enough to get her back teeth or you may just have to stop her and use your finger to massage her gums.

I am a dental hygienist and my 13 month old son also grinds his teeth. The hard candy sound is a good description of it! It is horrible but almost all children outgrow this by the time their adult teeth come in. It is very common. I do see some children who flatten their teeth and my son has a small chip--from grinding or falling while walking I am not sure--and there is nothing you can do restorativly. I am sure she will be fine. Let me know if you have any questions

Mine does the same thing. She's done it off and on for a couple months now. (she's 11 mos. now) Anyhow, I've thought about asking the dentist. There's no reason to worry if there's no damage being done, you know? I haven't called....but if you're worried, go ahead. i'm sure they've been asked the question before.

Hi, My son used to do this something awful. I was always a teeth grinder when I was in my teens and had to wear a guard. I was worried that he was doing the same thing. I asked my dentist and he said that for young kids it's different because either they do it because their teeth are coming in or they do it to help loosen their teeth when it is time for some to start falling out. He is now 10 years and his teeth are healthy and in good shape. If you get too conserned and don't want to make a trip to the dentist I'm sure you can call your nurse at your pediatrician's office and she can help you also. Good Luck!

My 13-month old son does the same thing! My friend has a little one who is 17-months old and she says he does it every time he is getting new teeth? I agree it is an AWFUL noise and I also worry about damage to the teeth. However, I don't have any clue about how we would stop them! Good luck!
