Daughter Saying Ouch When I Put Her in Bathtub and Now During the Day

Sometimes the very top of the butt crack can get dry and literally crack...usually hairline cracks. Try either a diaper cream or I've used petrolium jelly on my daughter. It soothes it, and protects it from "the elements", and heals in fast order. Another thing to think about... my daughter also has a terrible time with wiping after going potty, and after a few times of this, develops a terrible "rash" (or rawness) on her front area, which can lead to the back, as well. Petrolium jelly can soothe this as well, but I've even had to get some vaginal cream at times to take the sting and itch away. So that's something to think about, as well. Hope this is helpful! This isn't much help because I'm not sure why it happens but my daughter turned 2 in December and she grabs her bottom in the bathtub while standing up and cries sometimes. She doesn't seem to want to sit down anymore. I haven't seen anything wrong with her bottom either. Just wanted you to know that it has happened to someone else also.

I would check the water tempature. I know myself that if I make my bath too hot that is the first sensitive spot it hits and it can make me bounce right out of the tub. Just thought.

My son has light constipation issues and often has hard stools. After a while his anus acually gets sore and a little swolen almost like hemoroidal but not quite. He would often tell me his bottom hurt and expecially to sit on the hard bathtub. After adressing his diet and acheiving softer stools, the problem has gone away. Maybe one thing to think about if she strains to go poop.

Lots of great different things to think about from other postings. Only wanted to add that my daughter had a UTI once at 2 years of age and if left untreated your child can start having fever as well as lead to a more serious kidney infection. So if the ointment at the top of her little bum doesn't help the "ouch" go away because of cracked or irritated skin then I'd have her checked for the UTI. I'd even keep a dash of Johnson's Baby Powder with Cornstarch on it during the day as she plays, sweats, etc. I know it's hard to feel confident about the decisions we have to make sometimes since our kids are too little yet to be able to tell us exactly what it wrong when they don't feel good. She's unlikely to be making a big deal about it unless it is truly bothering her. Make sure that you're not using bubble bath or other irritating products especially around her private area too. If you look at her anal area, does it look really red? If not, I'm not sure what the problem is, but, if so, then it could be irritation from her poop, especially if she has had some loose stools. What always made my son feel better was if I put some Desitin (Desitin Creamy) diaper rash cream on that area, after I washed the area gently with water and patted it dry with some tissue. Now, it does sting a bit right when you put the cream on, but then he would feel much better, plus, it actually heals the redness and discomfort. I hope you find a solution that works for her.

Maybe she just likes saying the word...my son will be 2 in April and he says "hot" to everything :)

Poor kiddo! My two year old has done this before, but not in the tub. I think it's partly due to their bottoms just being so sensitive. When she uses the potty, we use the moist wipes (flushable type) so she never uses toilet paper (which may seem scratchy to a 2-year old bottom). You might put a dab of A&D clear ointment (something without the white pasty residue that might be more bothersome)once or twice a day. That stuff is a miracle and it works super well on dry skin, diaper rash, skin irriations, etc. Best of luck to you!

Maybe it only seems like that is where she is grabbing? I would have her checked for a urinary tract infection possibly.

If she's been scratching at it she might have small hairline type scratches... have you put on some diaper ointment? At any rate, couldn't hurt.

I've got one that does it when things hurt but sometimes the "hurt" goes a little longer than I think it probably should and it's just because she enjoys the extra attention...

My youngest also has severe ecezma and with the dry air winter is by far her worst season...could she be suffering from dry skin? That would certainly make her say ow (sensitive to water or particular soaps) and sensitive to clothes, etc. Just a thought

I'd mention it to your Dr. and see if he wants to check it out. It almost sounds to me like maybe your daughter noticed that doing this gets your attention and so maybe she's "stuck" on doing thsi for a while. :o) My son has done things like this in the past. I'd say if there is nothing wrong that you or your Dr. can see then maybe you should consider giving her ouch's less attention so she learns to reserve them for real ones.

Good Morning S., I know this sounds really gross but have you noticed anything in her poop? Little white things? I hope not, but you might check. Our gr daughter itched like crazy and she had those tiny little worms. Medication took care of it.

It may be just very very dry and it burns or itches a lot also.

Has she had a bowel movement recently? If not, she may be constipated which can be quite uncomfortable/painful.

Have you checked her for a pilonidal cyst? This can be a tiny dimple, usually found in the upper part of the bottom crack. If she has one, it can become irritated and be very bothersome. My son has a very noticeable cyst and I have to make sure that it stays clean and dry. These cysts can be very bad where if and when they become irritated, it is under the skin so you wouldn't see it just looking for it. And, if the cyst is deep enough, it could even be attached to the spinal column and cause severe pain later in life. My son's was so pronounced that they did an ultrasound when he was less than a week old to make sure that it didn't have any attachment to the spine. Fortunately, there wasn't any attachment and I just have to be extra cautious when doing diaper changes. Hopefully, it is somethlng much less serious, but I had never heard of this before until my son was born with it and I have now done ltos of research, although there isn't much out there.
