Daughter Sick- Need Advice

Sorry this is so long. My 11 month old daughter has been suffering from diarrhea on and off for 2 weeks. It would last 1 or 2 days and only happen once or twice a day and then be normal again the rest of the week. We thought it was milk intolerance since it would go away when we stopped giving her yogurt or cheese. Over the last 2 days it has returned without giving her dairy and this evening it was the worst. 5 minutes after feeding her, everything that went in came out and about an hour later she vomited for the first time. She doesn't like pedialyte and she has been refusing to drink more than 3-4 ounces of formula or breastmilk at a time, but will take water. When she isn't breastfed she drinks Enfamil Lipil. Could it be the formula? She was on augmentum last month for an ear infection so I thought it might be from that but she has been off them for awhile. She doesn't have a fever and is her usual active self otherwise. And suggestions would be great.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who wrote back. I started her on the BRAT diet right away and by Sunday night she was back to normal. We still went to the pediatrician on Monday morning to make sure everything was okay. It was just a stomach virus and it was taking awhile for her to get over it. The doctor believes her mild symptoms were because she had the Rotavirus vaccine. As a result she had no fever and only vomited the one time. The diet really helped and again thanks to everyone who helped.

How long has she been on the formula? If he has had it more than a few months, I think she would have showed symptoms before now.

My son had a stomach bug that lasted a few weeks. He started off vomiting and then it switched to ALL dirreah. Everthing he ate went straight through him. My dr. recommended the BRAT diet. Bread, rice, toast, anything starchy. She said to also push liquids of anykind. My son liked the clear peadlyte, it really has no taste. It took 2-3 weeks but he finally came around. Hope this helps.

Hi J.,

I highly recommend taking your daughter to the doctor. There is a terrible stomach bug going around that my daughter and husband both got last week. My daughter had diarrhea for a few days so we figured something was brewing. Then out of nowhere it came and she was up one night vomiting. The diarrhea lasted 5 days after that. It could just be that. I know the pediatrician said not to feed anything for at least 2 hours after vomiting and then do liquid so you definitely want to speak with your pediatrician. The formula/milk could cause flem...

There is a pedialyte that is unflavored. My daughter didn't want the flavored stuff so I added about a 1/4 of her juice to the unflavored stuff and she drank it right up. She got all the nutrients she needed.

The other thing is - my daughter sometimes had diarrhea when she was teething. Any teeth coming in?

I suggest talking to your daughter's pediatrician. Also, my daughter(s) both had a hardtime with enfamil lipil and my youngest is now taking enfamil lactofree. You can ask your pediatrician about that also.

Good luck
S.

Hi J.,
In my opinion first of all u shud call her doctor and ask about it ..that wud be the best.
It cud be the stomach virus or it can be related to teething.
In place of pedialyte or Gatorade..u can boil some water with 3-4 mint leaves, mix a little bit of sugar& salt(a pinch) in it and then give her.i usually do it for my my baby who is now 29 months old...
sorry ,Don't know much about Formula/lactose intolerance.
Hope Riley feels better soon .

J. augmentum is awful on my kids. terrible diahrrea from day one until days after they're done with it. next time maybe ask for omnicef. it is much better, unless she is on antibiotics a lot and then they have to rotate them so she doesn't develop immunity towards one.
i reread your post and can't see whether you have discussed this with the pediatrician. if you have and they have said 'let it run its course' go get a second opinion. the thing is diahrrea could lead to dyhadration. offer clear fluids as much as possible, little at the time and monitor her. one nurse at our old ped's office had told me for me to know whetehr they're urinating while having diahrrea is to put a pad (women's) on the diaper and that way you can tell. i did that once and was able to tell they had urinated.
good luck

J., I think this is definately a problem you should discuss in-depth with your pediatrician. We can all give you advice, but I think for something like this you should call your pediatrician, and don't let them tell you it will pass. It seems to be chronic, and that seems dangerous to me. Good Luck

Maybe it has something to do with iron. When my daughter was younger she had really bad colic and she also had diarreah. She was having problems gaining weight, so my pediatrician suggested that we try the low iron formula. ask your doctor about this. we only tried it for a few weeks, and it really helped. also, maybe she is allergic to milk, maybe trying a soy formula will help. good luck!

if she is lactose intolorant which it might be because augmintenton doesn't have lactose in it but lipil does....so that could be the cause. I would call the doctor and let her know she may be allergic to something but since you went from a hypoaligentic formula to one with lactose that could cause a problem since that is the only one she is drinking.

J.,
If your daughter is BF, then I do not believe she has a intolerance to milk. Augmentum is a good formula for those that suffer from GERD and other problems. But, if you took her off of dairy and she still did not have a problem, I find it hard to believe she is has problems with dairy. She may be going through a bug. Be careful with Pedialyte and Gatorade. They contain artificial color, flavor and preservatives. These ingredients can cause more diarrhea. We suffered with this dilemma unfortunately for 3 months with my first son(8 years ago). He had it so bad his poor little butt was raw, red, rushed and he was in a ton of pain. About one week after taking him off the Gatorade and Pedialyte, he was back to normal. But, by that time we had also taken him off the formula and switched to Whole Milk. I do not think you need to worry about getting her the formula so much at 11 months old. Of course, she needs it, but with her sickness, it may be best to just back off for a few days and allow her just water and the starchy foods so her gut can heal itself. (You can also check out the Laleche league site for articles on food allergies and such. They have some really great resources).
Next... I would recommend you putting your daughter on Probiotics. This is how I have told my kids about it and what they tell others. Your gut.... is made up of good bacteria and bad bacteria. Probiotics are the good bacteria. Lets call the bacteria... soldiers. So, you have good soldiers and you have bad soldiers. When you take probiotics you are increasing the good soldiers allowing them to fight off the bad soldiers. This in turn helps with your digestion. Better digestion leads to better absorption of minerals, nutrients, vitamins and sugars that our bodies require. Our entire family takes probiotics (among other things)everyday. I also use a tsp of it in my daughters bath once a week. She takes 1/2 tsp of Acidophilus in her morning milk each morning.
My brother in law suffered from Colitis for most of his childhood and adult life. For 5 years we have been asking him to supplement with Probiotics and 2 years ago finally got him to do it. Now, he rants and raves about how much it has helped him. He has not had any problems since he has been talking it and it finally willing to listen to me more about other Multivatims, herbs, and natural healing remedies for things.
So, HTH. Good luck, Keep us posted on the outcome of things for your daughter. Please feel free to email me with any questions, concerns, help or just a shoulder to lean on.

Are you saying she was on Augmentin, the antibiotic? Then do the probiotics. She can even just eat yogurt, but you can also buy the probiotic in a capsule, sprinkle it over her food or into a drink. Even if it's just a bug, the probiotics will help.

BRAT diet, definately. But at this point, since it's been going on so long, go see your doctor and see what protocol you should be following, Her gut nees to heal and your doc is the best person to ask about how you should go about helping your daughter do that.

I definitly would consult your doctor, and don't take no for an answer. My son suffered with the same symtoms for three/four weeks. Everyone told me there was nothing wrong. But we just left the hospital last week with bowel obstruction and illeus. The point I am getting at is moms know best and go with your wtih what you feel. I do agree with taking a probiotic or some form of acidophilus. They do make liquid form. hOpe this helps

My son is just getting over a nasty stomach virus which unfortunately both my husband and I ended up catching. The first day of it he started out with diarrhea and vomiting and would not really drink or eat anything. The vomiting went away but the diarrhea is still present. He only had a slight fever the first day and except for losing his appetite he has been himself through out the illness.

I would consult your doctor but I know my little guy gets diarrhea almost every time he is on antibiotics and it could just be your little one caught the stomach bug that is going around fairly quickly after the other problem.

if she just had an ear infection it could be the bacteria from tht giving her the runs.. my son had it for MONTHS during cold/flu season! if shes throwing up it could be the stomach virus thats going around. try the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) and they make unflavored pedialyte that you could use in her bottles or plain w/ water since she likes that.if shes transitioning to grown up food it couldbe her system too just adjusting. hope it helps a little!

Hi J.. Not sure about the issue with being allergic to the formula. Have you taken her to her pediatrician since this started happening? If not, I think I would let her pediatrician know that this has been going on for 2 weeks. It is possible that it is just a virus that she is taking a long time to get out of her system. Or it is possible it is different viruses. You don't say how long she has been using that formula, but if it has been longer than the 2 weeks that she has been having the problems, I would look elsewhere. I think your best bet is to contact her pediatrician.
Good luck!

Have you tried giving her a BRAT diet? Its very effective. The BRAT diet takes her off everything except easy to digest foods. Bannas Rice Applesauce Toast (dry toast no butter) You do this until the diaherra stops and then slowly reintroduce foods last group to come back is the meat milk and cheese.

Also make sure you give her plenty of fluids babies this age can get dehyrated very quickly. If your having a hard time getting her to take fluids you can make Pedialyte ice cubes. They work very well, but talk to your doctor to get the right dosage for her on the pedialyte, too much when not needed can cause harm to her kidneys.

Just things I have learned along the way...Hope it can help you, hope she feels better soon!
