My 23 mth old woke up this moring coughing somewhat like a seal. After a few coughs it stopped. I checked her temp and it was right about 100.1. I gave her ibprophen called the doc. She told me to monitor her and call them back in the am if it doesnt get better. I am very concerned about this nasty stuff thats going around. I think maybe it might be broncitis or maybe crup??? Just needing alittle advice on what going around out there. Thank so much:)

What can I do next?

B.-- My 3 year old had it a couple of weeks ago. Her fever and didn't feel good for about a week. It took another week for her lungs to clear out completely. Basically, the cough should last for 3 days. As long as her fever doesn't last longer than 5 days, my doctor said she was getting better. Just keep an eye on her! Good luck.

It could just be a cold, but colds turn into bronchitis and/or coup, so you might need to take her in to the doctor. My eight year old has a cold right now, and we are putting vics and socks on her feet at bedtime, it is working like magic, and I learned that here on Mamasource. The main thing is to try to control the cough, because the irritation from the cough can cause the other problems.

It does sound like Croup. My DS had it in Aug and now again last week. It was a lot worse the 1st time round, Had to take him to the ER. He could not breath, they put him on a breathing treatment plus gave him a steroid.
He is now 2 1/2 and doing a lot better.

I suggest a humidifier, steam shower. Good Luck

Last Friday my 7 yr old son sounded just the same I took him in to his DR office and was told larangitis(may have spelled it wrong) Told to give hime a cough and sore throught OTC med. Later that night we were in the ER with a fever of 99 and he was diagnosed with having the crup.We were given a steroid breathing treatments and with our follow up yesterday antibiotics. The pediatrician told me to watch out the crup and whopping cough is going around and it is not uncommon to see it in a 7 yr old. I may be a little over protected when it comes to my kids being sick but I would take your princess in to see the DR.That is only my opinion.Take care.

Sounds like brochitus for sure. They have children's mucinex which will help loosen the mucus so she can cough it up. I don't think it is necessarily the flu, but a by-product of it. I had chronic bronchitis as a child. We did a decongestant and now we do mucinex for both me and my kids. She needs to break up the mucus so she can cough it up. Also, humidifiers are great for this.

B. - sounds like croup to me as well. I'm an expert by now since my 2 1/2 year old son has had it several times. Here is the story on croup: it is a viral infection of the larynx which typically happens more at nighttime (the barking cough) than in day.

Croup gets serious only when your child has difficulty breathing because the larynx has swollen. **Remedy is putting child in steamy room (bathroom with hot shower going) then taking them outside in cool air (which we will be getting tomorrow). Do this several times during day and right before bedtime. Put humidifier in room.

**If her fever came a day or two after croup, then there could be a secondary infection that needs to be treated. Last week my son had croup cough for 2 nights, Dr. told me to just try the natural treatments (steriods is the only cure but not the greatest thing to have them take). On the 3rd day he got a fever of 101 and I brought him in again. Dr. said when there is a LATE ONSET fever it most likely means he has another infection somewhere (sinus). She did put him on antibiotics just in case. We went ahead and did the steriods again to get rid of croup.

**Do not give him any antihistimine if she has nasal drip, because it doesn't do the croup good - it dries out her throat and you need to keep it moist. Lots of fluids and keep the monitor on at night to listen to her breathing (or sleep with her).

Broncitis is in the chest - if you hear that her cough is coming from the chest you must take her to the Dr.

Croup cough sounds much worse than it is... but I'm always a bit more cautious than not.

hope this helps.

It sounds like she has croup. Does she has wheezing every time she breath? If yes, I suggest for you to take her to the doctor during the day.. Put her in the bathroom with hot shower steam till you reach her doctor. See if she needs to see the doctor now or ER. She needs some breathing treatment and a shot. I had experienced with my daughter when she was 3 years old.

My son had that same croupy cough two times. The first time was worse and the doctor did a breath treatment and prescriped something with a cortizone steroid or something to break everything up in his chest and help his airways.

The second time, wasn't as bad...it might have been different. I gave him some Mucinex and it seemed to help. It went away on its own.

The shower/steam trick really does work, and try a humidifier in her room. If you are really concerned and worried, it's better to get it checked out at least for your own peace of mind that you did everything you could to help your little one feel better! Good luck and take care!

I have twin boys and they recently had croup. It was harder on me than it was for them. The best thing for them is moisture in the air. Keep them in a small area and use vaporizers or humidifiers. You can also sit in the bathroom with a hot shower steaming up the room. It can take 3-7 days for them to get over it. Mine both had it. One had it worse than the other. The sounded awful and did not seem to be playful like ordinary. They are now completely passed it and both doing fantastic. The doctor told me it was a viral infection and that you can't really give them anything. I will say we did major on prayer and lots of lovin'.
A blessed mom of boys 8 mths old.

Sounds like croup if the cough is barking. She could be worse at night- wheezing- you can take her in the night air or in the shower. I've taken my dd to the ER- they give her a steroid in a cup of juice. She was well by the am. They say the bronchial tubes are not big enough at this age and they will outgrow this by 3 or 4. If you wait to go to the Dr. he/she cannot prescribe anything that is as strong/quick as the ER.

I know when my son had a crupy cough they told me to turn on a hot shower and shut the door and sit on the floor or toilet and hold him or her for around 20 minutes. The steam loosens the flem in the chest. It really worked. Give it a try.
