Hello Ladies,
My soon to be eight year old will be having her first slumber party this Friday. So far, at my daughter's request, we will be decorating cupcakes and painting our nails and watching a movie. I just wondered if any of you had any ideas or recommendations for the party. I want it to be fun yet simple. I also wondered what movie you would recommend for a group of eight year old girls. I can be pretty picky about what my girls watches. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

What can I do next?

tips for slumber party
rule #1 before any of the girls get there have a complete plan ready with your daughter. about what is and is not acceptable , about what time is bedtime, about what will happen if someone is sick or wants to go home.
rule #2 have a set departure time for all the girls. 10am is a good time they get up have breakfast and woosh out the door they go.

the most important one though is setting a bedtime otherwise kids thing slumber party means stay up all night lol. have fun

Nanny McPhee 2 is coming out this weekend, what about watching the 1st one so they are all ready for #2???? I'm not sure what movies are recent, but at my daughters slumber party (turning 9) last year the girls watched BOLT, with John Travolta and Miley Cyrus and they all LOVED it.

The other thing you can do is rent the first 'season' of a classic TV show that they might not have seen, but will love - like the Brady Bunch or Little House on the Prarie - both very age appropriate. Who doesn't LOVE those shows and it's a great way to introduce a new "old" favorite!!!! We did that with Full House when my daughter had her 1st sleepover at 6 yrs old. 8 yrs old may be a bit old for Full House (even though my daughter still LOVES the show and she just turned 10!!!).

I love slumber parties for birthdays. We have had 4 now (all except this year, she didn't want to so we didn't.). What works best for me is to get a big plastic garbage can/bag and put it right next to where the girls are - that way they can throw away all their trash and you won't have as big of a mess. I also bought the smaller bottles of water (8 oz, I think. I know, NOT green) and had them in a cooler with ice along with gogurt tubes, baby carrots and fruit that the girls could get to themselves. 2 of the years I rented a big popcorn machine from a party store (like $40, which includes the popcorn packets - depends on your budget) and then bought the popcorn topping shakers (there's like 6 flavors) and let the girls flavor their popcorn before they watched the movie. That was a big hit with the girls - they LOVED to see the popcorn pop!

I have found that the girls really do tend to entertain themselves - so the less you plan the better (and easier for you). I usually have a stock of craft stuff on hand in case they want to draw - my daughter and her friends tend to be 'artsy'. I also made sure to request that EVERYONE bring their fave stuffed animal so anyone who 'needed' theirs wouldn't feel bad about bringing it.

One year we bought those magnetic picture frames that you can decorate and the girls each decorated a frame - with stickers, letters markers etc. I took a picture of the girls right before bed and printed them off on the computer so that was their take home item.

Good Luck and have fun!

My daughter got Wii Sleepover for her birthday. It is a game on the Wii that has the girls really do things - so fun!! So now we need to have a sleepover and do it :). But if you get it, play it first so you know what supplies to get!

Oh gosh. I remember having a sleepover when I was 8. I remember having a blast staying up all night with a bag of peanut butter m & m's. Nothing special. I'd just say don't enforce a lights out time and let them have fun as long as they keep the noise level down. At that age, kids are usually great at coming up with there own fun things to do :)

I am not as picky on the movies, however, out of respect for other parents, I always tell them what movie is planned just in case someone has a problem with it.

The main thing for us was always to have an even number of girls because no matter what, there is some pairing up and keeping it even just works better.

Even at 15, my daughter and her friends still enjoy the Wii, rock band, cheer and dance.

I think it sounds like a good plan so far! I have a feeling that the girls will find plenty to keep themselves busy and you probably don't need to plan much more than what you already have! Maybe you could have them make homemade pizza to eat while watching a movie, that would take a bit of time and be fun!

The Hannah Montana Movie, Nanny McPhee, The Parent Trap, or you can check what's on demand with your cable provider. Let them have a pillow fight,
freeze dance, karaoke/singing, Wii, and let them make their own breakfast. Hope she has a ball!
