Daughter's Eating Habits Have Changed

Hi Mommies,

I had such a great response to my last question that I decided to try a new problem and get some help. My 7 1/2 month old daughter's eating habits have changed. She used to eagerly eat solids whenever I would give them to her, complaining when I was too slow spooning the food into her waiting mouth. Now I can't get her to eat more than a few bites before she starts crying. I've tried feeding her in different locations, changing the temperature of the food and room, even only feeding her those favorites from when we first started solids, and I have a set time for when she gets solid meals. Nothing is working! The only good thing is that she still takes her bottle. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

A couple of things come to mind. Have you offered any new exciting flavors to her palate, or is she still getting the boring single ingredient meals? Maybe she is ready for more exciting flavors and textures. What about finger foods? Cheerios soaked in formula are great start. Another thought, is she teething? Maybe her little gums hurt. Try giving her a dose of Tylenol prior to a meal and see what happens.

Sometimes babies/kids go on "food strikes." Maybe ask your Pediatrician about this....
main thing is she is still taking her bottle... make sure she gets adequate intake this way at least.

Do you give her her solids before of after the bottle? Maybe is she just full?

Is she sick or not feeling well in any way? Sometimes this affects their eating. Or, have you looked in her mouth? If a baby has "Thrush" it will look like white patches in the mouth.. and this causes discomfort when eating/nursing.

Teething also affects their eating/nursing.

If there are no other "symptoms" maybe just take her to the Doctor..... even to just rule out anything else.

Or what are you feeding her? Sometimes, some foods may irritate the mouth or cause gas...or maybe she needs a different texture... is she on stage "1" foods or stage "2"? maybe try something different...?

How puzzling. My children, they would get less interested in eating when they were either teething or sick. But then these are more obvious "symptoms." But all babies are different.

I would just ask the Pediatrician.... to rule out anything.
take care,
Susan

Is it possible that it's a teething issue? Sometimes when you have a new tooth trying to break through, if you bite down on that spoonfull of food with an inflamed gum, it's going to hurt and make you not want to eat. Maybe try giving her a cold teether or a frozen washcloth (one that had been dipped in water before freezing) to chew on first before meal time may help make feeding time easier if teething is an issue.

Acid reflux, the time in which you are feeding her (is she tired?) or the amount (7-months old don't eat that much) may also be an issue. If it is an acid reflux issue, you may want to check with your pediatrician on this and make sure that she is not tilted back too far when you are feeding her.
