Daycare Problems - Rivesville,WV

My son (11 months old) recently got hit with a double whammy at daycare, a double ear infection and an intestinal virus, along with a cold (which could be caused by teething). Many other infants at the daycare also had ear infections and other illnesses, some of which sent them tot he hospital. Is it normal for babies to get illnesses all the time when they go to daycare, and should I be worried that all the babies got sick with potentially serious illnesses? Is it something the daycare is doing or is it just usual?

What can I do next?

Try finding an at-home daycare if illness is causing a problem. I have been working with kids, mainly out of my home, for over 12 years and we very rarely have an illness that spreads through all the kids. I had 5 kids at once, along with my son, a few years ago and we never had an outbreak. I have worked in a couple of daycares over the years as well and some (not all) don't sanitize their toys or tables as well as they should.
If you could find a stay-at-home momma who will only take on a couple kids at a time, you will cut down the sickness greatly! I keep things extremely sanitized. My son brings germs home from school (which is just how it goes), but we keep it away from my 18 month old daughter and the little one I watch pretty well!!
Good luck!!

My daughter us 9 months old and also and day care. It is very normal for children in day care to get sick A LOT. My pediatrician said it could be every 2-3 weeks with a sickness. They sneeze and cough all over each other and share toys. Knock on wood but so far my daughter's only major illness that she picked up from day care was a stomach virus (that lasted A WEEK!!!). Do you know how often your day care cleans the facility? I wouldn't blame your day care right off the bat but I would find out how often they clean their facility. It's most likely more to do with the fact that she is in day care and not because of the day care.

My daughter just turned 2 in September and started daycare also in September. She has had a runny nose off and on ever since. She had pink eye twice already and she just got over RSV not to long ago. Lucky I caught it on time before it got serious! All of the times that she has been sick someone in her class had the same thing before her. I also have a 13 year old daughter which also went to daycare when she was two up until she was 6 or 7 years old and when she started at daycare she to was always sick! Now, she very, very rarely gets sick with anything. I guess it sort of helped by her being in daycare because her immune system is great now. Even with her 2 year old sister around with colds all of the time she still rarely gets a sickness or cold.I hope this helps a little with your question. Hang in there! I know it feels like a lifetime and it is terrible for a little one to be sick!

Hello,
I realize this is a late response but I just wanted to say not to listen to Michelle J's response. As a new mom to a 9 1/2 month old I understand where you are coming from. There are so many things we worry about and it is ridiculous that someone would respond in that way. It is unfortunate that some people believe there is only one way to raise a child.

Take care and know that you do put your child first. Good Luck

Good job taking initiative of going back to school while also caring for your young child. It's a very hard thing to accomplish for anyone without kids let alone with.
As most other responses state, childcare and illiness go hand in hand and that's just the unfortunate truth of it.
I hope that you can continue to complete your schooling so that you can start a career that might not require you to have to keep your baby in daycare forever (until kindergarten!)
God Bless you.

As almost everyone has said, kids in daycare do get sick more often because they are sharing toys and whatever with colds. He will build an immune system and be just fine - its actually good for the child to build a strong immune system so young to help when they are in school too. And as far as Michelle J's comment about putting the kid first - she has no right to be mean like that and try to sound like a mother with a child in daycare is not putting the child first. My son always comes first to me which is why I have to work to support him so he goes to daycare as well! How dare her imply that your son is not first in your life - I'm sorry but that was rude and irritated me to no end! Not everyone has the means to be a stay at home mom - but that doesn't mean that their children are not first and foremost in their life!

I realize this request is old but I have an interesting response that I'd like for people to be able to see.
breastfeeding helps since anitbodies that the mother's body produces go straight to baby. Viruses are are handled by the pH of the body which is also assisted with breast milk. You have to pump regularly since you'll not be with baby. While you may not be in contact with the germs as early as baby you might get lucky the next time you kiss those little beautiful lips. I breastfed my son for three years (it helped him survive the rota- virus without meds, special drinks or a week at the hospital like the baby he got it from through me.) And other than that he was never sick, and even though he didn't attend daycare my mother who worked in a nursing home had him with her while I worked part time.
Consult a naturopath or someone who knows how the human body really works and how to help you a person keep thier body at optimum function.
The daycare might be interested in buying an air purifier that pruduces ozone and/or uses ultra violet light to keep the air fresh and clean. I have personal experience with those and they work. The investment is worth it and as long as they follow the instrustions on how to use the purifier they'll be able to tell the difference. I have the one from EcoQuest but if you don't want to talk to anyone just do a search for air purifiers and present what you find to your child-care center.

From being a former daycare employee, kids do get sick almost constantly, no matter what you do. At the center where I worked when my son was a baby, we cleaned everything with either high strength bleach water or lysol water numerous times a day. toys were used and washed, the swings, playpens, big equipment was washed down nightly (or more ofter as needed). We washed high chairs meticulously. We had a really great cleaning policy and enforced our sick policy quite strictly, still my son had ear infections every other week, in the hospital once, had chicken pox (before he was eligible for the vaccine, but out of the 9 kids who got it, most of them had the vaccine already.) and had a constant cold.
Unfortunately, in a large group type facility, you are going to be dealing with colds and such. You might want to check the cleaning policy just to be sure, but I would not automatically blame the center. (Alot of illness are actually communicable before you realize that the kids are really sick, so there really no way to stop the illnesses from spreading.)
God bless

I think it is pretty normal for kids to get sick quite a bit in day care. When one gets it, it seems to spread around quickly. My kids are not in day care, but whenever they spend time with a group of kids, they inevitably get something. The ear infection, itself, is not contagious. That is just a complication of the cold virus, so I wouldn't worry about him "catching" another ear infection. My baby has had three different colds in the past six weeks. All the yucky stuff is going around, and kids have a way of sharing it all. Hope your little one is feeling better soon.

Hi, I have a son who is 3. He has been in daycare since he was about 1 1/2 yrs.old. Ever since then, he is sick all the time ! I cant tell you how healthy he was as a baby. Now, everytime I turn around he has an ear infection. I just took him to the dr.this morning again for the 2nd time in 2 weeks. It pretty normal for them to get sick until they build up their immune system. It does take awhile. My doc told me that. What sucks is that Im a single parent, so when he is sick, Im out if work. But thats life! He does come first ! Good luck with your son and just be patient. He will soon develop the strong immune system that he needs. ( Although my son is still working on that ? :) Anyway, hopefully my little bit of info eases your mind!

I just wanted to let you all know about a super awesome nanny I know who is looking for a job. She needs full time but doesn't mind splitting up days with more than 1 family. Her name is Najat Benanssa. She was so great with my 2 kids. She's very motherly, they loved her. She took them outside to play every day, twice a day. She played with them, she sings songs, she is a fun, responsible and nurturing lady. Her references are impeccable too. If you need someone I hope you will give her a call, She is a rare find and anyone who gets her will be very lucky!

Here is her number: Najat Benansa ###-###-####

It is normal for young children to get viruses and such quite often - especially when they are around other children in a daycare. By getting these viruses young they build up immunity to them and tend to miss less time from school when they are older.

However, the daycare can help the spread of viruses by cleaning everything daily and by enforcing their sick policies.

From my experience, the first year that your child is in daycare they are constantly sick. They're building up their immune system and it'll hopefully get better soon. Both of my children went through this. My daughter is now about to turn 5 and is sick maybe once a year (still going to the same daycare), and my son is 19 months and still get sick, but not as much as he used to and not as badly, rarely anymore something that sends him home. I'm sure it'll get better. how long has your son been going to daycare for?
