DD Having Pooping Problems

My dd will be four in september. We have had issues on and off with her pooping on the potty. She's been potty trained for about a year now. She used to do great, but then had one poop that was kind of hard for her to get out. Needless to say that made her a little scared of going poop on the potty. We finally got her over that hump, but now again she is having issues with going. I don't know if it's just in her head, or if maybe she's trying to get attention or is jealous of her younger sister, who will be one next week. I am looking at getting her into pre-k in the fall but I am afraid they will not take her if she is not fully potty trained.

What can I do next?

We had the same, if not close to the same problem with our 4 year old daughter. Turns out she was anemic because she won't eat veggies. Once we get got her iron levels up with iron drops and a multivitamin w/iron and making the deal that she eats one mouthful of veggies everynight (or she gets the YUCKY iron drops) she goes like a pro. It was virtually in like 3 days that she started going and going well.
We went through the enimas, laxatives, suppositories, everything to get her back on track with going poop..those worked at times..now that her iron is normal so is the pooping.

We had the SAME problem with my son. But he would go 10 days without pooping!!! My pediatrician, who is rather conservative, said my son wouldn't be fully potty-trained until he was no longer constipated. He suggested using Miralax once a day. He called it the "miracle drug", and boy was he right! We just stirred it in his juice or water (can't use it in milk) once a day, and it worked wonders. Now that he has regulated himself out, we don't have to use it all the time anymore. But we keep it on hand just in case! You can find Miralax at Walmart. Good luck! I know it is frustrating!

Hi S.,

I had the same problem with my son for a long time and finally got him to go stinky in the potty just before he turned 4. I'm assuming this is what did the trick, and I advised another Mommasource mother on the same thing and she said it worked for her son. All I did was to give him a very simple explanation of where the stinky goes after it is flushed down the toilet. In our case, to the septic tank. After giving my son that explanation, he never had a problem with going poopy on the potty again.

Not sure if it will work for your DD or not, but certainly worth a shot!

Best wishes!
T.

I agree with the mom who talked about how adding vegetables to her child's diet helped. Also, some raw fruit - like cut up pieces of apple or orange would help to prevent constipation. Lastly, I know one mom who added an omega 3 supplement (they have some yummy flavored liquid ones) and it relieved her son's long term constipation - not saying your daughter has that problem.

Good luck!

Hi S.,

My pediatrician told me to put one tablespoon of Benefiber a day in my 20 month old daughter's milk to avoid having potty trouble coming up since she gets constipated often. I found one for children at the drug store and it worked. The pharmacist also told me it was fine to give to her since it is natural. As a back note, my son, now 5, also was pee trained for a year before poop, and got a stomach bug that upset his tummy at age 3 and poop trained himself because he had to go so often. He never looked back. While I don't like giving something to my daughter, and I don't do it everyday-just if I notice she hasn't gone recently, I think the Dr. is right, it needs to be softer to avoid problems. Eventhough she isn't constipated, it may help to have it be easy. Hope that helps!

Hi! I have a 5 yr old boy and a 14th month old boy as well. We had similar issues with potty training after the baby was born, right before the oldest started Pre-K. I won't lie- we had a few accidents in the beginning. His teachers seemed to expect that to some extent- they had everyone bring extra clothes. It was embarrassing, but he learned quickly that his teachers didn't like it and the other students would laugh. After a few weeks, he straightened out. I'd bet that your daughter's issue has alot to do with baby sister, but if she's anything like my son, she'll adjust very well. Just having a mom who is so concerned about her is the best medicine! Try not to worry about it- she'll figure it out before you know it :)

Good luck,
J.

She HAS to do it 'somewhere', and it doesn't feel much better doing it in your pants than on the potty. Maybe pour some hot water in her potty (if she has her own) and that helps relax the sphincter muscles. Also just talking to her about it calmly during a happy, relaxed time (not frustratedly in the 'heat of the battle') how everyone has to 'eliminate' and sometimes it hurts for everyone, but if she keeps it out of her, it will more likely be soft and less likely to get hard and 'hurty'.

I know it may seem kind of 'all consuming' right now, but you'll look back at it as a 'speed bump' instead of a mountain.
