Please, please, please, I have a four month old baby boy and I'm JUST BREASTFEEDING!!! I have a horrible head cold and I can't take any meds (at least that I know of) I can't pump and THEN medicate because my little sweetie refuses to take a bottle. :-) I've tried to give him a bottle in the past so DH and I can have an evening out but he has (and continues to) choose not to eat at all rather than take the bottle. Is there ANY RELIEF AT ALL that anyone can help me with? May be someone's granny has a non chemical home remady?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi Everyone!
I just wanted to thank everyone for all the great tips they passed on to me about treating my cold while breastfeeding! The hot showers were a BLESSING! DH watched they baby for me so I could stay in as long as I wanted. (Much nicer than my usual 15 min. quickie!!) I got some Altoid mints and they helped a little with my nose. And I "just kept drinking" soup, water, juice, tea, anything! :) This is going to sound really strange but I put Vick's vapor rub on the bottoms of my feet and put on socks and I SWEAR it made me feel less conjested!
OH!! And I tried the playtex bottle and Chris did suck it for a couple of seconds before he spit it out so I have hope that he may eventually take it! Thanks Again!!!

Hi L.,

What helped my sister & I was peppermint tea and/or lemon tea with some honey. After I made the peppermint tea I would breathe it in & that would help w/my congestion as well. Also taking Vitamin C a couple of times a day helps! It totally sucks being sick while breastfeeding, I KNOW!!! Good luck! And hopefully you'll feel better quickly.

hi L., i just wanted to respond because, even though many say you CAN take robutussin, my gyn, who is very conservative like me where meds are concerned, says not to. a hot shower can work wonders for a head cold, put some peppermint or menthol drops in the bottom of the shower, on a washcloth or something, the kids medicated body wash is good too, and get it all hot and steamy and stay in there as long as you can. be sure to drink lots of liquid so you dont dehydrate. hot tea, chix soup, etc. believe me i know how much it sucks being sick while bf, look at the bright side, you are giving your son all those good antibodies everytime you nurse him. feel better soon, D.

I promote a wellness company. Wellness products. Not sure how fast you could get them but you should look into the products. I use their tea tree oil when I have a cold it is unbelievable and so safe for your baby. I just put some under my nose and it clears my head. You can also put some in hot water and inhale the oil.

They also have ecosence cleaners tht are amazing and so much safer then what we buy in the store. My four kids have not been sick in a year. My email is ____@____.com or my website is http://colleend.stayinhomeandlovintit.com

L.,

Ditto the Playtex drop in with the yellow (latex) nip.
What little bottle feeding my daughter succumbed to was from this--and I tried MANY.

Hope you are better.

Most over the counter meds are safe with breastfeeding. (Psuedophed is not good, because it can rapidly dry up a milk supply)You should contact your local LLL or a Lactation Consultant. They use THE book on medications and breastfeeding called:"Medications and Mother's Milk" by Tom Hale.

There is a homeopathic remedy called "Airbone" that my family uses. It's available at almost any drug store. Just homeopathics, no meds. Might want to try it.

Feel better,
R.

You can take plain regular Sudafed and Robtussin. Most anything you took while pregnant you can take now. There are exceptions of course b/c some meds can dry you up like Zyrtec. If you are curious do a websearch, call a lactation consultant or even your primary care Dr.
Other things that may help is a hot shower and letting steam co it's thing and saline nose drops.

If you have a juicer...

6 carrots
5 or 6 sprigs of parsley
1 clove of garlic
1 quarter sized chunk of fresh ginger

juice that and drink it. Yes, it's gross but I swear the cold will be gone within hours!

Hi L.,

I am a breatfeeding mom. Some rememdies I have tried are: a cool mist humidifier, you CAN take sudafed (plain not with cold rememdies), you CAN take a basic cough medicine (ask the pharmacist which one), drink ALOT of tea to keep your fluids up (or your supply might drop for a few days), cough drops (any kind), Vicks Vapor rub on your back (not your chest or the baby will breath it), and as much rest as you can. If your other children are in school, you need to at least rest, if not sleep, when Christopher does. Hope you feel better soon! J.

Try the playtex drop in bottles - this was the ONLY bottle my daughter would take when i stopped breastfeeding - also, she will only use the yellow colored nipples, not the clear... try it - it may just work.

Good luck!

Call a lactation consultant. There are tons of medications you can take. As far as I can remember you can take anything that you could take while you were pregnant. Try Robitussin. I know when your pregnant you can take regular Robitussin and Robitussin DM.

I have one quick question...it's one I have asked in the passed and got no responses to other than the few private messages from others saying they were waiting to here what the responses to my question were because they too did not know the answer.....what does DH stand for????

In the meantime, I have no remedy for you, and even though I am not breastfeeding, but am also sick, AND am on antibiotics..NOTHING is working, and I'm going into my 3rd week with Bronchitis, so I feel your pain! I hope you feel better soon!!

I know that you can take sudafed and robitussin. They aren't much but may give you some relief. I had the same problem with my son not taking a bottle and finally got him to take one by sitting on my lap facing away from me. Maybe you can try that. Hope you feel better.

Hi L.,

Check out www.kellymom.com. It's a website for nursing moms. It has a listing of everything that is safe for you to take. It helped me out a lot when I was nursing my daughter.

Hi there, I would imagine that you can take Robitussin or any Tylenol product. I only suggest this because that is what they say you can take while you are pregnant. I hope you feel better and hope baby doesn't go hungry. Good luck

I had got these 2 in an email awhile back and just saw them yesterday sorting through my folders... I don't know if they will work for headcold symptoms, but wouldn't hurt to try. I hope they give you some kind of relief.

Did You Know That? Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately -- without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional "pain relievers."

---and---

Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up your stuffed nose.

Oh, and something I have tried is Airborne. It seems to supress the symptons a bit and shorten the time of illness. I would assume that it is safe to take while breastfeeding, since it contains vitamins and all that goodstuff.

My kids refused a bottle and the pediatrician told me to leave the house and have someone else do it, and I was shocked when it worked. It took about an hour of crying (hard crying)... and I was only comfortable doing that because the pediatrician told me to, and it made all of our lives better.

Try saline nose spray for the head cold

Good luck
