One thing that we use when my son has a cold are the sudacare vapor plug in things, that's the technical term ;) ! Anyway, they let out a nice menthol scent, and it seems to clear his sinuses and helps calm a cough.

I have a one year old right now. Since he was about three months old, he'll wake up at night due to coughing. I guess the coughing is from post nasal drip. I am just curious if anyone has to go through this as well with their own child. Some nights are better than others. However, there are nights my son will just cough and cough for about half hour. We've tried the cool mist humidifier and even allergy medication. Doctors say it's allergies, but my poor little guy has to deal with a night's rest not so restful. Any suggestions. What is the age to find out what a child is allergic to? Are there any sources of relief for my son???
Thank you for your response. You know the thing about propping my son's crib is he sleeps everywhere in the crib. he'll start on his pillow but then an hour later he's flipped completely over. i used to be like that. i just wonder what my son is allergic to. i will ask about the cough strips. Thanks again!

You can purchase a crib wedge that fits under the crib sheet and will prop your son's head up and he can't roll away from it because it's like a large pillow that fits the entire width of the crib.
My kids started doing that around ages 2-3, I would take them to the dr and they would say it was nothing. Of course they were all military doctors, I finally took them last year to a civilian dr and he diagnosed them with Asthma. I don't know if your son's cough is the same, but my girls had that wet icky cough that would stick around for awhile. He said it's the mildest form of asthma, and it's caused by allergies. He gave both a steroid and an inhaler, and said to give the inhaler when needed. So now when they get that cough, we give them their inhaler and they do much better, and it goes away faster. My 5 year old has had a couple of mild asthma attacks, since moving back to Colorado, (from houston)but they are both doing much better! It's something to ask the dr about, if this sounds familiar. I wish you and your son the best!
Our daughter has the same issue with coughing. The doc recently prescribed a nasal spray and that seems to help lessen the nasal drip and reduces the bother to her throat, thus reducing the cough. She also has allergies and asthma runs in the family so we are keeping a watch for that. She is three and I am not sure if the nasal sprays are prescribed under age 2, but might be worth asking your doc or keeping in mind as he is older.
My 14 month old daughter is dealing with post nasal drip and coughing day and night. Her pediatrician suggest 1/2 a teaspoon of claritan daily and I am going to try that and if that doesn't help I will take her to the allergist next week.
The only thing I have heard of that works, is having them sleep with their head propped up a little higher! This is easier when they are tiny, cause you can let them sleep in their car seats, but I am not sure how to do this with a toddler! I guess you could try those triangle pillows! I hope your little guy gets better!
I know how you feel. Me and my husband have been dealing with the same issues since our son was 9 months old he is now 4. We have tried evrything to help him, including everything you have done. He was tested for allergy's at about age 2 1/2 and we were told that he had none. Even though his doctor says he does. We have found that it helps to riase the head of his bed just a little so he isn't laying flat. We have also taken to given him a warm bath before bedtime. One medication that was perscribed that worked really well is singular. It is an allergy med. but has also controlled his coughing. Have they tested your child for asthma , because that is the only thing that they told us could lead to night caughing. If you have any other question please feel free to email me
my youngest daughters have both dealt with this and nothing works better than good old vicks on thier chest. i rub some on thier chest before they go to bed and it helps the whole night. they love it and it makes them sleep so much better.
There are many natural herbs that you can use to help your son. I would recommend 1/12 of an adult dosage, and see if that helps. If you are not comfortable having him consume the teas (mixed with milk or formula), then you might try using the herbs as a potpourri or vaporiser. Here is a website with some herbs that might be helpful: http://www.richters.com/newdisplay.cgi?page=./QandA/Medic...
Hope this helps.
I have dealt with the same thing with 2 children. My first went through this in Germany, and then we discovered that she was allergic to Cottonwood trees, they were the shedding type, and every spring and fall it would look like it snowed there were so many trees in the area. One thing a doctor suggested was to prop her up on pillows so that she was not sleeping flat and the discharge could run down her throat.
When I had my 2nd child, 8 years later, we went through this again. Only with a small child as you know you can't prop them on pillows, due to SIDS. What the doctor suggested, was raising one side of the crib, propping it up on blocks, or using something like a rolled blanket under the mattress, so that one side would be higher, and not suffocate her. Whichever you can do safely. This did help.
She is now seven, and has asthma, allergies, and has been on daily medication for years. She still has these coughing spells that sometimes last all night. She sleeps with me, so it is easier for me to prop her up when needed, plus she is older. One thing that i have found to work are the cough patches that you apply to their chest, instead of Vicks, they do not leave a mess, and they work just as good.
Check with a doctor on whether or not you can use them at that age. My daughter was 4 when they came on the market, so i am not sure.
I can sympathize with you, I have had this problem for years, and have lost a lot of sleep with it, and i work full time, so i can't make up for it the next day. Also i am alone, so there is no one to turn to for help.
One thing i can tell you, is that it gets better with age. As she got older, she is not sick nearly as much, and she sleeps better.
