Debating on Whether to Cut Son's Hair

My son is 16 months old and has never had a hair cut. He has somewhat thin, curly hair (not sure where the curls came from). I am debating on whether I should cut his hair. We love the curls but they are becoming a little frizzy and unruly. I am thinking about keeping the curls if I can manage them or giving him a cute cut but worry about it not looking good because his hair is still thin. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of the great advice. I have decided to hold off a little longer on getting my son's hair cut. I went online and bought the Morning Miracle spray and it is working great. Everyone loves his curls and thinks they are just beautiful so with the spray managing them, I think I will wait a little longer.

My son's hair was really thin at that age, too, with the curls and the frizziness. So, I just took some scissors and started shaping it a bit - not really giving him a short cut, but a shaped cut. (Be sure to give him a snack, a movie, or some other favorite thing to make this fun!) After I did that, his hair really thickened up and became much more manageable! Now at two he has thicker hair than either of my girls did at that age, even though he started off the same way they did!!

My oldest son had the same hair as your son thin with curls I just loved it. I finally cut his hair around 2 1/2. It really thickened after we cut it. He still has curly hair but he will not allow it to get long enough to notice that it has curls. When we did cut it I saved one of those big ringlets. It some point he will have to have a hair cut but I would not rush it enjoy those curls while you can.

Hrm.. Well my son's was that way. I decided to go with the cut and have been giving him the fade cut since then. He was about 22 months when I cut it. The only thing I would suggest is use moisturizers like a dab of leave in conditioner. It worked for a while til his hair was just too long and in his eyes.

We all have extremely straight hair in our family and both babies had beautiful curls in their baby hair. Those were gone once they were cut off and never returned. If it's getting too long on him, do a typical little boys/business man hair cut to the side. He'll look precious as ever and the thickness won't matter. Be certain to get a picture of before and after!

so sorry K., but i am of no help on this one. my first born child had 7 haircuts before his first birthday! His 7th cut was the day of his first b-day party, in fact. His hair was blackish brown, super straight, soft and sticking up all over the place when he was born! curls just aren't in my blood, lol...sounds like beautiful hair your baby has, but as you've said, not going to be easy to manage when he becomes older. Then again, who knows it may change.

Good luck! Take him to a stylist who is good with babies hair. Are you living in Metairie, Louisiana or anywhere near Kenner? If so, my sister is an excellent stylist and good with babies hair! She has her own shop out in kenner. I'd be happy to tell you how to find her if you live near there.

sincerely,

D.

My daughter has the same thin, curly, unruly hair. We had it cut (professionally) and it got more frizzy and unruly. I am now trying to grow it out and find a de-tangling spray(I use Johnson's Kids) will tame the curls to a smoother look.

Hi K.!
The decision to cut his hair will have to be up to you, but if you want to keep his curls, I will tell you what worked for my son. He has very soft, curly hair and to keep away the frizz I bought BioSilk from the SmartSyles Salon in Wal-Mart. It is about $12 a bottle, but it will last for a very long time. You put a little dab (less than dime size) in your hand and rub them together, then run your fingers through his hair. Hope this helps!

I cut my daughters curls when she was almost 2, it was still curly for awhile, but her second haircut took care of that. You will have to cut it eventually, but keep those curls as long as you can, I just love them! I did find that after her 1st haircut her hair started filling in much more quickly, I've had other moms tell me the same thing about their kids hair. Maybe I should have my younger daughters hair cut, she's almost 2 and has very little hair-but it saves time not having to fix it. She can't keep a barette or bow in it for more than a few minutes. You may try a bit of mousse or styling foam in his hair-just so it won't be frizzy, but won't be stiff either...God bless

My daughter Samantha's hair was the exact same way! When Sam was 20 months old I took her to the woman that does my hair and had her put some layers in Sam's hair so the curls had room to do their thing. That stopped her hair from frizzing out and her hair looked so much thicker! Now her curls are picture perfect - for about 90 seconds after I brush her hair - and we go get our hair done together!

Hope this helps!

this has to be a decision between you, and your husband.
H/ever I would suggest you make a folder and make a book of his life. Thereby saving a lock of his hair.
The book should begin with his birth, pictures etc. certificates etc.

Pictures and stories of his great great etc grand parents.

You could give it to him when he marries!!

God Bless

Please cut it. I am a hairstylist and I hate seeing babies tortured with their long hair because their mommy doesn't want to lose the curls or want their baby to look like a big boy. You will probably love how handsome he looks when he gets a "big boy" hair cut. Take an envelope with you and save his curls in his baby book!

my daughter and nephews' hair is the same. my sister in law ans i both use Morning Miracle from Snip-its (kid's hair cut place). it is a spray you can use wet or dry, but it doesn't give them the gel look, like adult products can. unscented, with spf, $10 for a huge bottle. my daughter is almost three and we are still on our first bottle, and it is half full
