Decrease in the Formula Consumption

My daughter takes formula and gets so excited when she sees her bottle. Recently she hasn't been drinking as much as usual. She drank 8 ounces at once but now only drinks half. Is this normal for a baby that is turning 1 year old next month? She does drink juice during the day and eats Gerber stages 1-3.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My daughter is doing well now... we are trying not to give her a bottle as much and adding the foods and juice more.

Thanks for all of the advice. I really appreciate it.

well being that she is going to soon be 1 she will be going on milk soon anyway. it almost sound like she is weening herself, my son did the same thing. if she isn't alreayd on a sippy cup now would be a good time. and if she isn't on regular table food now would be a really good time to start. my son, who is now 2 1/2, weend himself off the bottle at 11monthes. and by 13 monthes he was only on a sippy cup and cow milk and was very happy about it. i think that is harder on the parent to give up that bottle then it is for them. at least that is how i felt. :-)

My daughter did the same thing when she was about that age. I talked to the pediatrician about it and she said it was because her food needs are changing. Before, her main source of food was being filled by formula. Now, formula is not enough for her. She told me to give her more solids and less formula. She's transitioning herself into taking the formula (soon to be milk) as a drink rather than a meal.

My 2 year did the same thing once she started eating solids. She would have 3 bottles a day, one 8oz in the morning and 2 6 ozs the rest of the day. When she was 11 months, I started mixing whole milk with her formula in a cup. Then I would substitute the cup for the bottle. By the week before her 1st birthday she was off the bottle and formula.

My 9.5 month old has recently started the decreasing of formula. Sometimes she will drink the whole 7oz and other times she may only drink 1-2 ozs. She doesn't drink that much juice either. So I am going to start putting her formula in a cup for a month, and then start the whole milk mixed with formula. They fill up on the foods, that they really just use the formula for drinks.

My son was also a big formula drinker but as soon as he started eating more solids they filled him up and he stayed full longer. She may just not have enough room in her tummy. As long as she is health and still gaining weight she is doing exactly what her body needs. ( At least that is what my Pediatrician told us) Hope she has a happy 1st Birthday!

well at this time, or in a month of so she should be off formula. i would suggest limit or take the juice completely from her diet, it will fill her needs for liquid and not in a good way.
i know around 12 months she should be drinking between (from two different pediatricians) 12 to 24. one of them said 16 oz milk/formula a day is plenty.
truthfully once i switched my girls to regualr food the amount of milk decreased, so i just upted the yoghurt and cheese and stuff
so do not worry

A decrease in formula is normal enough when a child that age starts eating table foods. Is your daughter eating any table food along with the baby food??

That sounds about normal. At 11 months she can probably start eating many foods you are eating - just smashed a bit or cut into tiny fingerfood sizes. At about 1 you can start letting her basically feed herself completely. It's best to stick with the formula until she's 1 year, but you can offer sippy cups with water too and diluted juice. My little ones always have a water sippy floating around on the floor when they are playing for easy access so they stay well hydrated. I start them on learning to use the sippy at 6 months when they start eating baby food and by about 9 months, they have them out during play time too. My ped always cautions to stick with no more than 4 oz of diluted juice a day. Also, you should only give her the juice in a sippy - best to avoid giving in a bottle. Water and actual fruit are better than juice for them (and us!). Babies do really slow down in their growth at 1 year and so they don't need as many calories. Follow your daughter's lead. Babies are usually pretty good about knowing how much food they need to keep up with their calorie output. As long as she's continuing to have normal diapers and is growing and learning, she's doing great and there's nothing to worry about.

That's totally normal since she is eating other stuff. Sometimes she'll go through a growth spurt and end up taking more formula again. It just all depends. So don't worry.

I would say ask your ped if you can transition her to milk and juice in a sippy cup. Can't hurt to ask.

It is normal at that age. I started my youngest son on milk at 11 months. She is eating regular food so she really doen't need to drink formula that much. I would worry if she is getting bloated and constipated. Just keep note of how many BM she is having in a week and call her doctor if you get worried. My kid's doctor said that it is normal for them to go up to 2 days with out a BM. If that is happening then you should call the doctor and see if it could be from the food or not drinking enough formula.

I wouldn't worry about it especially since you have to stop formula in a month anyway. You should start giving her more table food. There's no reason to keep giving her baby food either since she can pretty much eat everything you eat now.

How much is she drinking throughout the day? I think they're supposed to drink about 32 ounces a day. Also, if she's turning one soon you could probably just switch her to whole milk. My pediatrician said to me that if I finished a can of formula a week or two before my kids turned one that I could just start the whole milk instead of buying more formula.
