H.,
Congrats on the new baby! I do have some advice that may help you. I, too have problems tolerating hormonal birth control. After speaking with my OB, we decided on and IUD called Paragard. This is a copper IUD as opposed to Mirena, which is hormonal. The Paragard is insterted by the OB (I recommend that you get it done during your period. I know it sounds gross, but it's most comfortable for you). It lasts for 10 years, unless you decide to have more children, then you just have it removed, and there is NO waiting period before you can get pregnant again. The Mirena is good for 5 years, and the other perk of Mirena is that you may stop getting your period. You will continue your period with Paragard...the first 2-3 months your period will be heavier than usual, but I think it's a small price to pay for piece of mind...not to mention NO WEIGHT GAIN, and sanity! I hope this helps, and feel free to ask any other questions that you may have. Good Luck!

I was on the depo and gained weight. I am still fighting to get the weight off. Have you tried Nuva Ring? I thought that the shot was given every 3mnth?

Also talk to your doctor. Best of luck.

Hi H., I was on Depo for 3 years. I had a weight flux on and off. It got OK futher into my experience. In the first year I had mood swings, headaches, break through bleeding, weight gain.
After about a year, I seemed to even out.

Good Luck

Hey!

The depo made me gain like 40 pounds, and it is very hard to lose, once you have gained it! Depo has some horrible side effects! If you search depo side effects, you will read some pretty bad things that have happened to people. I was just diagnosed with colitis, and was reading on the net, that birth control can cause it!

Don't let this alarm you but everyone I've ever known who took that shot had weight issues, and still does have weight issues...It's like these poor women just cant shake the pounds no matter what they try...I suggest getting off of it immediately...the only time i saw a mom lose the weight was after she had her 3rd child (she got the shot after the 2nd baby) and she nursed, the nursing really helped her slim down.
Good Luck to you!

To be honest, I had my little girl in Dec. 02. Was back down to 144 in 3-4 mos, got the depo shot in June, shot up to 175 shortly there after. Never did lose the weight, am 8 mos prego now,, hoping my body will go back to normal after this one. I only got one shot too.

Of course after I got the shot, I then heard of many woman who gained tons after it, wish I'd known before hand, I would have never gotten it.

This is my fourth child, so my hubby is takin the responsibility now, lol. I'm done.

Good luck to ya in whatever u choose to do.

hello sorry to hear about your problem i have always struggled with my weight and really put it on when i got pregnant with my twin daughters but i am sure you asked the doctor and know that the shot alone does not cause weight gain there is some kind of enhancer in there that makes you more hungry and you actually eat more while on the shot so if you stay on the depo shot you have to really watch what you are eating or get a diet suppresant such as adipex from your doctor i just took of 40 lbs while taking the diet pill and exercising 30 minutes 5 times a week best bet is to discuss this with the doctor good luck and god bless

H.,
I had the depo shots right after my son was born in 1995. Stayed on it for 3 years. Ballooned to a HUGE weight. Massive headaches, severe hair loss, and my temper flared often. When I finally got my period again (after 2 years), I have had severe bleeding ever since. I'm talking 2 boxes of Super Plus's + Maxi's for over a week! I think if I wouldn't have had so many common side affects, I would have stayed with it. If you notice any negative changes in your body, talk to your doc asap!

Hi, I have never been on the depo shots, but everyone I know that has had them has gained ALOT of weight and has never been able to get it back off. I know this is disheartening but maybe it can help you to stop before it gets worse. Like I said, I have never had the depo shot, but I find that I cannot lose weight since having my second child. Strict diet and excercise has only afforded me 10 pounds. Nothing else will budge. Good luck.

Hello, I'm currently on the depo shots. I've had 4 so far, and my major complaint is that when I get my period I bleed for weeks. I'm considering taking something else, but honestly my main concern about taking the pill is that I often forget to take it. My mind is still like a sieve since being pregnant.

As far as weight gain, I gained a lot of weight when I was pregnant. I've struggled with my weight all my life, but I gained 50+ lbs. while I was pregnant, pushing me to my all-time-heaviest weight of 270 lbs. I lost 20 lbs. within the first month after giving birth from breastfeeding, but then I joined Weight Watchers, and I lost another 31 lbs. (so far).

I was warned about weight gain while taking depo, but because I've been watching what I eat, I haven't gained any weight. It may be affecting the speed at which I lose weight on Weight Watchers, but I'm still losing weight.

So, my suggestion would be to also think about what you're eating and consider moving a bit more. Yes, the shot may be affecting your weight gain, but there may be other factors involved.

Hope this helps.
