Desperate to Lose Weight

I am 25 years old. My husband I have have been married for 2 1/2 years. We have a daughter that will be 1 at the end of March. I am overweight! I cannot blame the fact of pregnancy/baby because I was over weight when we conceived. By the time we conceived, I had gained 40 lbs. During my pregnance, I gained 16 lbs and lost every bit of it after I delivered. Since our daughter was born, I gained another 35. I am now 75 lbs heavier than we I got married. I am desperate to lose weight. My husband is wonderful and faithful; however, he too wants me to lose weight (because I was happier with myself). I am petrified of what my life will become if I don't lose weight. My father passed away 7 years ago, at the age 42, as a result of his diabetes. My grandmother passed away as a result of her diabeties. I do not have diabetes, but I am afraid that if I don't do something now, that I will get it. I check my sugar often, it is fine at the moment; however, my blood pressure has been a little elevated lately. I am open to any serious suggestions.

NOTE: I am also still breastfeeding, so I have to be careful about what I put in or keep out of my body.

Hi H., I am in the same boat that you are in. My daughter will be 1 on March 27, and I too am still breastfeeding. I weigh more now than when I went to my six week check-up. I am about 70lbs overweight and only 5'3", and its scary with my family history of diabetis and heart disease. For me it was the junk food and fast food, and in January I decided that it was time to take control. I started with a food journal and cut out ALL carbonated drinks. I haven't started exercising yet, but I am watching calorie intake. I am going to sart walking with my daughter when my son is in preschool in the mornings. I try to stay in between 1800-2000 calories a day. Eating the right kinds of food and portion control has helped. I now have lost 12lbs since keeping up with my weight in January. If you live in Mississippi you can go to www.letsgowalkinmississippi.com there you can sign up to get a free pedometer and tips from blue cross about healthy living. Also, at www.mypyramid.gov to enter all oof the food that you eat and it will tell you how many calories you are eating and the servings based on the pyramid. You could also consider a nutrtionist to evaluate your diet and tell you exactly what you should be eating. good luck, I hope this helps

I completely understand. I too have been overweight from the day I was born. At least it seems that way. First you have to firgure what will work for you. For me I have been using a free program on line called www.fitday.com. You type in what you eat and it calculates your calorie content. I do it not just at the end of the day but half way through the day so I know what I can have for dinner. It also has a activity page to add exercise, but you do have to add your sleep each day as well. It then has a number of reports. Like calories eaten vs calorise burned etc. I really like it. It will also track your weight loss and other goals. Like increasing exercise, calories per day, water intake, and more.
There is another site called www.sparkpeople.com. That site gives you daily meal plans that you can customize. It depends on what works for you. I have lost 30 lbs in 6 months - plus exercise of course. I found a gym - for me it was the local YMCA that had day care facilities on site. Now you should be able to got some good deal on gym memberships. Like the waving the membership fee.
But some thing you can also look into is to see if you are insulin intolerant. If you are, then you have to change the way you eat completely. Basicly if you are, then when you eat starchy foods your body floods your blood system with insulin which then causes you to have low blood sugar and then you are hungry again and craving carbs. And of course you are in a constant carbo coma. If left untreated, it can turn into diabeties. So for me I stay away from big white carbs as much as possible and eat a protein with each meal, weather it's meat, eggs, nuts, peanut butter, milk, etc. (not so much beans unless it is a soup with meat as well).

Hi H.,
I am sorry you are feeling badly about your weight. You owe it to yourself and your husband to get back to the weight you were when you were married. Its pertinent to get you and your kids to a ymca or a gym where they have childcare so you can allow yourself the time to work on you! Loosing weight is 80% diet and 20% work-out. You deserve that! Even if you can walk 30 minutes a day on the treadmill, 5 times a week you will see results. You must also eat well. You just have to make the commitment to do it and stick with it. The biggest mistake people make is to expect a miracle. The harder you work the sooner the weight will fall off. You must also make it a family effort. Your husband will have to learn to like healthy dinners and your kids will have to learn to like healthy snacks. If you keep junk in the pantry YOU will eat it! Foccus on 5 small meals a day to speed_up your metabolism and the most effective time to do cardio is before breakfast. I have tons of advice if you need more. A little about me........I ran 2 half marathons while I was pregnant (which is safe if you have been running prior to pregnancy) and I was back to my original weight 2 weeks after she was born due to nursing. I am also a single parent.....and if I can do all that alone, you certainly can do it with a healthy support system. I had nothing but myself!

Hi! You can do this! I have had weight troubles alllllll my life. After high school I lost on my own 75 lbs by portion control, exercise, and cutting out fatty fried foods. Then when I had my first baby, I gained 30 lbs, I lost 20 after he was born, but that was it, then I had another, gained 30, lost 20, so that automaticall put me at 20 lbs more than when I was married, then came # 3, I lost a little after her but then I quit work and became a SAHM. I am now going to LA Weightloss and I LOVE it. I have lost 30 lbs since August and I have more energy. I tried to do it on my own this time and I just didnt have the will power. If you would like to talk, I am here anytime, mommy stuff, weight stuff, anything! I will pray for you also.

Because you are breastfeeding, your daily caloric intake is suggested higher than what you would receive on most diets. Weight Watchers is a great program because you can modify and choose what you eat while still remaining in your points level and getting the nutrients that you need. Make sure you are still taking a multivitamin. If you try many things (consistently...giving them a chance to work) and see no results, consider seeing a doctor to have a thryroid check done. This can be a hidden culprit to many weight problems. Take Care,

Hi H., a piece of advice, I lost all my weight within 6 weeks of giving birth, then gained and gained and gained and despite my efforts and limited diet was not successful at weight loss. What I found out over a year later was that 30%!!!!!...30% of women develop thyroid problems after pregnancy, which I had developed. It is as simple as a blood test to determine that. If by chance you do an issue with your thyroid, your dr. should also check for elevated cholestrol, because an underactive thyroid cause high chlosterol. If all test checks out well, good luck on finding the proper weight loss solution for yourself. Jenn

My name is K. and I am the mother of two beautiful boys. I completely understand what you are saying about needing to lose weight. I myself have been mildly overweight since having my two sons. I recently joined a gym and I know that is not what you want to hear but I love it!! I have never had so much energy and in the first week I lost seven pounds. I am now heading into my third week and I am noticing a flatter tummy and defined hips and thighs. The result are wonderful and priceless. I can finally feel comfortable for my husband to see me naked and that is a wonderful thing. All this only after three weeks. You should really find time to join one and start taking care of "you". Talking to many mothers on here I find that is a common problem. Most moms don't make time for themselves. It is not only important for you to make time for you but also for your marriage. Everyone wants to feel sexy and the gym is the answer to all your problems. I am terrible at dieting so I eat what I want in moderation and exercise three times a week at the gym for an hour each time. Try it, I guarantee you'll love it. Good Luck to you!!

Hey! You should talk to your ob/gyn. Since your breastfeeding they may not prescribe it but once you are done you might be able to take phentermine to help you loose the weight. Also you could try weight watchers in the meantime. Or since the weather is starting to get nice you and the baby can go to the park and walk around that! That is what I am going to do. We went once this past week. I have NO will power for giving up food so I am just going to walk and cut out drinking cokes. Start small and it will start coming off!!

A little history about myself:

I wasn't overweight till I had children. I gained about 75 lbs with my first pregnancy, didn't loose much and still had my "baby fat, when I got pregnant almost 9 years later, I gained weight with that pregnancy too, have no clue how much but didn't loose much either after birth.

I was having problems with high blood pressure, diabetic issues, headaches, memory loss, high cholestrol, etc. I'm 35 but have never had issues till after gaining weight and not loosing it and keeping active.

I had a couple of friends that went to a Bariatric Doctor in Idaho and I decided to go since I was having such issues and no one seemed to know what exactly was going on. I went to the only doctor Board Certified by the American Board of Bariatric Medicine in Idaho. It was the best thing I've done! He's taught me a lot about how to eat and what to eat and also about hidden sugars, which I had no clue about until I found him. I'm on meds to help my insulin levels, which were way too high and my body couldn't abosrb it, and I've lost over 40lbs and have about 20 more lbs to loose until I'm at my target weight. Dr. Rader is who I went to and highly recommend him. I'm in TN now and have not been able to find a doctor who seems to care about "me" and my progress or family. Dr. Rader is very intune to your needs and you. I hope this helps. I sure wish someone would have pointed me in the right direction years ago!!!

Hey H.,
I had gained alot of weight as well due to the busy lifestyle I live but i've lost 20 lbs today by just exercising(and I dont exercise religiously) and cutting out the fast food and sodas. Doing that I dropped 10 lbs within the month. Even just a walk around the block helps. Also if you can keep your calorie intake under 2000 it will help too and you can always use the net to research how many calories are in something even for foods in the restaurant. I hope this helps a little.

Hey! I know this is a very small suggestion, but my mother and I have been using something for a few months now and it is working. Try this, extra virgin coconut oil. You only need 2 tablespoons a day, but it really works. It is best to exercise while using it, but my mother hasn't and she has lost 20 pounds in less than 2 months. I have been using it since November and I have lost 30 lbs. It cleanses your system and you have more energy. If you like hot tea or coffee you can mix it in with it. Also, instead of coooking with vegetable oil, use the coconut oil. It does make a difference and you can get the cooking oil at wal-mart. Good luck.

I am a stay at home mom of 7 children, 3 of my own and 4 step kids.

I can sympathize with you - I too am overweight and 4 1/2 months pregnant. While I have never taken any type of diet pills I have tried nearly every other diet/exercise program. I'm already struggling with that to do when this baby is born because I needed to lose 40-50 pounds pre-pregnancy. What I've learned at this point is that it's NOT easy and any lose it quick plan will either not allow me to keep it off or won't last.

What I've found to be the most effective and least costly is Weight Watchers. They've got great accountability and an easy to follow program if you stick with it but it's a lot of work and discipline on your part. I know you cannot do WW when pregnant but I believe they do have a plan for when you're breastfeeding. Check online or call the tollfree number and someone will help you. It sounds as if your husband will be supportive and that's a huge plus. My husband joined with me last spring - he stuck with it, I got pregnant and he lost 35 pounds and made his lifetime goal - just like a man! :) I know that's where I'm headed after baby #2 arrives. Good Luck!!

Hey H.!!

I know the feeling... I was fed up with my weight this Christmas and joined WeightWatchers. Since Dec 1 I have lost 19.4 lbs. Seriously amazing, I am always surprised. Anyways,I go to the downtown meeting and you are welcome to come one Thursday? They work with nursing moms, so that shouldn't be a problem. You should know though, that this is no get skinny quick solution, but really a lesson to teach you how to eat better. Better foods, better portions. I can still have a piece of cake every now and then too! I really did this for me AND so I can model healthy eating to my almost 2 year old. Email me if you need any help..

I signed up online (40$/month) - which helps you stick with it and that way I can use their online tools and I go to meetings. You can do just online, but I will tell you that meetings really make you accountable! Best of luck and email me if you would like to come to a meeting with me.

I know exactly how you feel. When I went to the Doctor for my yearly checkup the nurse took one look at my arm and pulled out the BIG blood pressure cup. I was shocked and sickened at myself. I knew I had gotten bigger than I needed to be, but that was the final straw. All of my life my metabolism has been off the charts I could eat whatever I wanted and not gain an ounce until I had my son. My metabolism went on a permanent vaca without me! I made it my goal and my choice to start eating healthier and to exercise. I don't cut out foods that I love I just leave some on my plate and don't get seconds. I joined Curves for Women because I was so out of shape I didn't want to stress my body. The low impact workout and pace was just what I needed. I have only been going one and 1/2 months and have gone down a pant size and lost 7 1/2 inches in my waste, 3 in my gut, and , of course, 1/2 inch in my chest. I go back for weighing and measuring the 19th to see how much more i have lost. I also cut out all canned drinks (except for the occasional sprite and sweet tea) and only drink water. My biggest problem was getting a Dr. Pepper when I was thirsty at work and gulping it down with a candybar. Now I eat a cereal bar if I need a snack. I'm loosing it slowly but HEY I'm loosing it. It's all in your head once you decide (like it seems you have) that you HAVE to do something you can do it!! Good Luck!!

I so know where your are comming from I am a 26 year old stay at home mom. i have been married over 7 years and have 2 girls 6 and 3. when i married my hubby I was 144. (i am 5'10") and looked really skinny. i got preg with our first daughter and gained 35 pounds. I could not get down under 170 after that. then with our second daughter went up to 199. After she was born I got down to like 185 but since then went back up. I tried many different things to lose weigh dieting, just plain not eating, diffent weight loss pills. I couldnt do it on my own. I stepped on the scales in Jan and was 205. I decided that was the last straw. I talked to my mom who is on weight watchers and my sister that recommended the raw diet ( eat nothing but raw food fruits and veggies fresh ya know) then looked on the internet and found Sparkspeople. It is very easy and free, I dont have the extra money to join some programs. It is really cool u put in your weight and what you want to go to by what date and they tell u the calories u need and how much ya need to burn per week to get there. and they want u to do it right not tring to lose more then 2 pounds a week (it stays off better that way too) I have been on there since Jan 26 and have lost 13 pounds!!!!! I am in no way a spokesperson for them but I believe in it cause i thought there was no way i could do it but I am and it is really easy for me. i dont feel like i am on a "diet". I will post a link thing hopefully it will post i have not posted b4 so hopefully it works if not just go to www.sparkpeople.com good luck and I know if i can do it anyone can just keep up the faith!!!

Have you had any luck? I've found that exercise is absolutely the best way to take care of yourself. I've never been seriously overweight, but I have been seriously out of shape. After many years of trying and failing, I was FINALLY able to stick to a workout routine. Unfortunately, I got busy and kind of fell off the wagon. I've been in Knoxville for almost a year and I try to work out regularly. I'm doing much better lately. I do miss having a workout partner, though. Do you belong to a gym? If not, you might think about joining. I use Court South and really, really love it. If you are interested, I think they offer a free trial or something. I'd be happy to show you around.

I know you're gonna get a TON of different suggestions to your question, but I'm gonna suggest the tried-and-true, Weight Watchers. It works. And it's not hard to follow once you get the points system down that they do these days. And I'm pretty sure it can be customized for nursing mothers, allowing for extra nutrition as needed. You can join a group for weekly meetings or even do it online.

Cereal! Seriously. I eat cereal for breakfast and lunch, and have what ever I want for dinner, just make sure no seconds on that. Take a peek at the cereal box. You will notice that even your sweetest cereals have 3% fat content, which is less than any thing else you will find. There are also tons of vitamins. I drink coffee, I have heard that you can't drink coffee and breast feed, but I do. The main thing is to stay moving durring the day. I am a stay at home mom, I have not joined a fitness club, and don't have time to exercise. Since Sept. of last year I have gone from filling an 18 to my 14's being loose. I don't drink soda, just coffee and tons of water. If you stay at home do as much as you can to walk around your house and clean, clean, clean! I don't honestly remember the last time I watched a talk show or soap opera!
