I've been newly diagnosed w/ Diabetes 2. For me it just means a change in lifestyle thru diet and exercise. I went to a 7 hr. diabetes education class and learned what I need to do and how better to manage my sugar levels through a diabetic diet. Since this is still so new to me can anyone recommend where I can find on-line recipes. If I google diabetic recipes I get nearly 595,000 hits. I obviously need help narrowing it down. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have diabetes. Most of my recipes come from Atkins or the South Beach books. I usually find recipes at regular places and then find ways to cut carbs/sugar from them. I use splenda instead of sugar. My favorite low-carb recipe is low carb lasagna. You make it just like lasagna only with cabbage leaves instead of noodles! It tastes pretty close to the realy thing. I cook it with low fat cheeses and I use Ragu Organic spaghetti sauce because it's pretty low in sugar and it has a full serving of veggies. If you want pasta, try the Barilla plus. It is a whole grain pasta, with added omegas and protein. And it's pretty good pasta!

Anyway, I hope this was some help... good luck!

check out www.everydayhealth.com There is a section for diabetes. My sister-in-law has diabetes and she has found this web site very helpful. They email you new recipes and info. It also has many useful tools for losing weight, etc.
Good luck.

Honestly, you really don't need to eat 'different', but just 'smart', so to speak. We should all eat the way you have just been informed about. We all really should. Stevia is a great sweetener. It will not alter your sugar levels at all. (Diet drinks are not good to use.) You can go to a local health food store (make sure you do NOT get Stevia with fillers...it will say on the side of the bottle). I use 2/3 of a teaspoon with a gallon of anything. My mother likes it sweeter and uses 1 teaspoon with a gallon of her favorite herbal tea (mock black tea).

Stay away from lots of carbs, like breads and pastas. Just limit them.

You could go to allrecipes.com and do a search for 'diabetic' and you'll find lots of recipes. You should be able to eat quite normal, but just change a few ingredients. Or you can go to a bookstore and browse through the many cookbooks and try new recipes. It's just going to take a bit of time and trial and error for you to eat like we all should eat.

Hi L.,
I just wanted to let you know that Stevia is an all natural/sugar free/0 calorie sweetner that can take the place of the artifical ones like splenda, equal, ect... This can be found at health food stores and it should be on all the shelves soon. I know Coke is going to start using it in their products instead of aspartame this year. The artifical ones are neurotoxins and lead to a lot of health problems. You can use the stevia in things like tea and your usual recipes while cutting the sugar out at the same time. It is said to be about 300x the sweetness of cane sugar so you use very little. For a gallon of sweet tea, I use 3 packets of this compared to a cup of sugar. Good luck to you!!!!!

I am a grandmother (69 years old) with 3 heart stents. I am slso a diabetic with high cholesterol. I've had to make some changes in "diet". More fruits, less meats. No Salt (for years). My blood sugar still stays high (even in hospital) - my dad's was same way. My diabetes was diaagnosed as an adult. I am now on 2 shots a day. Fresh fruits, small meals are the way to go. This also helps your children. I do occassionally eat soups with beef, vegetables, but eat FRESH most of the time. I also stay away from sugar alcoho. The problem with diabetes is everyone is different. I can't eat honey, or ice cream. I read every item I get from the store. I do "splurge" occasionaly - not every week.

I know this sounds like an odd place to find recipies for diabetes, but I was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes and my husband found that a lot of the recipies in Men's Health magazine are diabetes friendly. You can look for them online at www.menshealth.com. We subscribe so every month we tear out the recipies we like and put them in a folder. Its great b/c it gets him interested in the cooking and eating healthy foods. If you need anything else let me know. I have a couple of great easy to make chinese food recipies I can e-mail if you like.
