My 13 1/2 month old son has had diahrea since last Sun night. It seems to get a little better and then he will have days where the diahrea explodes over everything and everywhere. he has has such a hard time sleeping, eating, and has thown up 4 times since last Sun. I have been giving him bananas(which he wont eat anymore) peaches, squash baby food, toast, and lots of juice and pedialite which he doesnt like, applesauce and I will give him his milk because he seems to be craving it and will push away when he doesnt want anymore. He is on 1/2 whole milk and 1/2 soy formula and Im wondering if he just cant take the reg. milk at all. Im going to try and give him only soy but im concerned about the effects that soy can have on boys reproductive health etc. I saw the doctor last Wed and she seemed to not worry and said oh he'll be fine, but he is not and im concerned. He has also has lots of burps and gas. It all smells like throw up and poop. I was sick with stomach stuff from last Tues-Friday. Can you all let me know what you think? Thanks

What can I do next?

they make pedialyte that has no flavor or color like water and you can mix it with juice for flavor if you need to. I don't think the squash, peaches and applesauce are helping the situation. Stick to more starches like rice, cereals, pasta, bread, bagels, crackers
This may be relted to some type of allergy or it may just be what is going around.

I would definitely go back to the doctor. If he/she is dismissive of the symptoms ask to see a different doc in the practice. I am a true believer that a mother's instincts are very strong and often right! Best of luck!

Hi H.
Sorry your little one is so sick.
Have you called the MD again? They only know what you tell them and assume that our children are well til they hear different.
How long has he been on whole milk? If you did that at a year then I am guessing that he is allergic to it. Has anyone in your family had a problem with lactose intolerance or allergy?
Sounds like allergy to something.
We have allergies all over the board at our house. They cause all kinds of symptoms, not just the typical runny nose or sneezing just in case that is all you know about allergies.
All mine were/are lactose intolerant. Some whose than others. The hardest one to diagnose or figure out was the apples. I thought of them as easy to digest. I thought they were an early food. Well, you get the idea. Check it out too.
Hope all is well soon
God bless you and give you His wisdom

Hi H.-
If your son is having that much of a problem, he may be allergic to dairy. You should mention it to your pediatrician. Also, you should ask your pediatrician about FlorStor. It's a powder that you mix in with formula and it helps create intestional "harmony" I used it with my son and it really works.
Hope this helps

i had one child allergic to milk and one child allergic to soy. you may be giving him a double whammy by mixing both. just give all milk or all soy and see if it gets better.

I agree be careful of dehydration. My daughter seemed to become intoleratnt of milk at around that age, gassy with mucousy stinky poops--maybe it was a virus, who knows. Also she had always had some noticeable degree of mucous in there. When i put her on soy it was no help. I'll say what i did without a doctors orders ( he is a dismissive type). I got rid of soy and milk, and put her on enriched rice dream for a couple of weeks. The challenge was to keep the fat up in her diet and i gave her coconut milk too, and this coconut yogurt from the health food store. . Tried to maximize nutrition in the other foods Probably not the greatest health prgram, as she lost a little weight. Babies need the protein, vitamins, fat and other nutrition in milk. However, the poops cleared up and now she is fine with milk. Maybe the gut needed some time to recover from being ravaged. Again, not medically approved advice, but i preferred it to the continuous runny poop and strong gas. She is now thriving, loving most foods, yogurt, etc. Hope this helped. It can be such a difficult seemingly endless cycle with the milk. i hope your doctor can suggest something you both agree on that is safe to help your little guy.

Hi H.,

I hope your little one is doing a little better and having less diarrhea. If I were you, I would stop giving him the fruit and juice, since they will cause diarrhea in some children. As far as his eating, let him have cereals and if the Pedialite doesn't help, ask your doctor about giving him diluted Gatorade. The Gatorade would replenish his electrolytes which he loses with the diarrhea. It could be that he has a yeast infection, so I would try to eliminate things that have yeast in them for a little while, and introduce them slowly back into his diet. You have to watch labels to see if things are made with any yeast-type products. If he doesn't want to eat much, it's because his stomach is messed up. Let him eat what HE feels like eating, but I would definitely stay away from the fruits and juices for a few days. If you can't get an earlier appointment with his doctor, I would take him to a walk-in clinic and get the treatment he needs.

I hope this has been helpful to you.

I second the motion on the BRAT diet--Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. These foods will be easier on your baby's tummy--all the other fruit may just exacerbate the problem. My son loves fruits and veggies and so gets diarrhea often. I also take him off milk when he has a really bad spell. BUT--you are listing other symptoms, I would call the doctor again. A week is a long time for a baby to be sick (in my opinion) and the doctor should know that you are still struggling with symptoms.

Hi. I know the title says diarrhea however this may work for it as well. you can google it "the B.R.A.T." diet. Basically it is:B-bananas R-rice A-applesauce T-toast (you can put honey on it). also he can have some plain broth. I haven't had this issue with my daughter yet however i used to be a to 2 children your sons age and that what i used every time he had that issue. i would recommend googling it and maybe you can find more info about it since your son is tired of the fruit and doesn't like pedialite. HTH :-)

H.,
If you haven't been to the pediatrician again, go. Sounds like he could have what you had, or he could have that r- virus. I can't think of the name, but it can dehydrate in a flash - very very dangerous to let diarrhea go on this long without attention. If they still downplay it, I would get a second opinion.

Good luck,
M.

My advice would be to stop giving him juice. Juice is very hard on the stomach and you should offer only water, pedialyte or milk. When my kids have had a stomach bug it can last up to 10 days before they are back to normal.

Good luck and hope he fel better soon

Did you call the pedi? My son was hospitalized two weeks ago with the same symptoms from dehydration. I wasn't going to call the pedi at first, but my husband said that he was going to call. He did and she called us back, asked us what his symptoms were and called the ER to let them know that we were on our way with him.

BRAT diet (Banana's rice applesauce toast). Then try to avoid fruit juice, especially apple it will only make it worse. The same with peaches and any other fruit that begins with p (pears, peaches prunes and apricots) will also make it worse (those are the ones my doc suggested when they can't go). Stay away from graham crackers (again good for constipation) My son didn't like pedialyte also, I was told to give him gatoraid instead. Depending on how much fruit juice your giving it could be the reason for the whole problem.

I think you should call your doc right now! Just to check in, and see if he/she wants to see your child.

No milk, for diarrhea. Even if he wants it! Stick to the BRAT diet: bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (or other starches, like crackers or plain noodles). Soy milk is ok too, unless it makes his diarrhea worse.

My son hates pedialyte too, but he got very dehydrated from a stomach bug a couple of months ago. We got him to eat the pedialyte frozen pops, and to drink the apple "singles." (He liked the singles, because he could hold them and drink them on his own, rather than needing a sippy cup. He felt like a big boy!)

I also gave my son jello, at my doctor's advice. Some docs worry about the sugar making diarrhea worse, but for a while there it was the only liquid he'd take!

Good luck, and call your doc!
