Diaper Blowouts!

Hey Moms,
I have a 6 week old little guy and he has recently changed his bowel habits. He is breastfed and he will now go about 2-3 days between bowel movements an then just blow it out! All up his little back etc. My first son was the same, he could go a week sometimes! I never had any good solution with him but I was wondering if any of you have some ideas how to help with this or good tricks on getting baby poop out of clothes! Some of his cutest little outfits just get ruined. What I usually do is rinse the stuff out and spray down with Oxy clean, but I still see some yellow staining left behind. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

My son was and is still the same way. I ended up having to go up a size even though they look huge on him. And I had to switch to huggies, even though I LOVED pampers...Now I always have a junky onesie underneath his outfit for the day. Usually if I can catch it in time, it just soaks through the first onesie if not then its just a little bit on the outfit. I tried all the pretreatments mentioned below but found it too tedious. What I use to get the stain out is an old fashion soap bar called Fels-Naptha. I don't use the brush it comes with because I found it makes the clothes look worn. So I just rub the soap directly on the fabric and then just scrub with the clothing item that was already soiled. And I don't have to treat right away. In fact, I usually just have a separate laundry section and at the end of each day I do all the clothing items he soiled. Although, it won't work on stains that have already been washed and dried. Works wonders for me and only cost about 2-3 dollars and last forever!!

I use Era detergent, it has enzymes (same as pet stain products) that help "eat" the stain. I soak it in Era for about 24 to 48 hours before I wash. If you are out and it happens, getting even hand soap from the public bathroom on it immediately will help.

Mine was the same way- every 4 days. I wouldn't go anywhere on the "Poop Days" until it happened. And I dressed him in the junkiest onesies and soft pants he had, they just stayed his poop day clothes from then on, so I didn't care if the stains came out or not.

My son did the same thing. We switched him from pampers to huggies cause they have a stretch gaurd in the back that helped some and also went up a size in diapers. Also Dreft makes a stain remover that worked really well for us if you get to it within 24 hours of the blowout. It also helped to wash the clothes out in the sink immediately and if you put in a plastic bag till you get home.

I use spray & wash stick. It works better than the spray. Yesterday I noticed a stain in something that had already been washed & dried and the stick got out the poop stain. Sometimes I do have to wash the item twice to get the stain out. I do treat the stain each time I wash.

I had the same problem with my daughter! Every 3 days it was a poop of a lifetime, and then a ridiculous amount of time spent on stain removal. Yuck! I wound up spraying the stain with Oxyclean spray (while the poop was still wet) and then rubbing the spray into the stain with an old toothbrush. Then I would send it through a wash cycle with warm water and the new Tide stain removal booster pack (I can't remember the name of it). Most of the time it got it out in one try. If it didn't come out the first time, I soaked the outfit in hot water and color safe bleach for a few hours, then used the toothbrush to rub in Shout Advanced (for set-in stains) on the stain, and then sent it through the wash for a second time. This always got it out. Rubbing the oxyclean in with a toothbrush really works. Good luck!

You already got all the stain removal you need, but catching it is always the easiest thing. I know you have a little one running around, but if you can track when he is actually pooping for a week or so, you may recognize a pattern emerging.

My daughter would poop between 7 and 8 pm like clockwork every night. I liked to wait to give her a bathe until the last bm of the day (keeps the water cleaner too!), If she hadn't pooped by 8, I knew probably wouldn't.

She kept this pattern for nearly a year...excepting when she was sick or something.

Both of my kids have/had this problem! Now my 4 month old has poop explosions every day up her back, and there's no diaper solution that I've found, even though I've tried everything I can think of. I have gotten every piece of clothing clean though. You have to get to it asap. If it sits even for an hour, I have to go to plan B. The first thing I use is Shout. I spray it well and let it sit for about 30 sec, then use HOT water and rub. It works most of the time! For stubborn stains, I have a product I found on the internet that is amazing. There is no stain, washed, dried, spit-up, throw-up, poop, etc that it hasn't gotten out. Try Restoration by Engleside Products. You can google it. It's a bit expensive, but it's nothing compared to all the clothes (hers, mine, my son's, my hubby's) that I would have had to throw out! I've even used it to get out old spit-up stains I found after storing baby clothes for two years! If you get it, don't use the directions because you can use a lot less than it says and get them out super easily- there's no scrubbing involved. Yes, I sound like a commercial, but it's THAT good!

Try Clorox for colors.
Or, go to the pet store, and use the stain removal products for pets.

You might also try a different size diaper.

I was told to make sure to move them up to the next diaper size as soon as they start to get close to the low end of the next size. As soon as we started doing that we have not had any more issue (knock on wood, but its been a really long time).

Totally Toddler spray you can get at babies r us does the trick for us. But you also may want to go up a size. If you know it is going to happen, you can put a cloth between his back and diaper .
