Diaper Issues

My son is 3 1/2 and pottry trained during the day and naps. He is not quite ready for nightime potty training, which I am fine with, but recently he has been peeinbg out of his diaper at night. He used to wear size 5 overnights but I switched him into size size 6 daytime diapers when the overnights started to leak. It doesn't happen every night and when it does his diaper doesn't even seem to be full. It is almost like he pees out the sideor top. When this would happen when he was a little baby I knew his diapers were the wrong size but I am not sure what the problem is now. He weighs 32 pounds and is kind of between sizes. I have always used Huggies but am willing to change brands if it helps me from having to change wet sheets all the time. I try to limit his drinks before bed but it is hard sometimes. It is very hot where we live and my son gets very thirsty. Dinner tends to be later in the evening because we try and get as much park time in a day as possible so cutting off drinks two hours prior to bedtime is sometimes hard. Thanks for any advice you can give.

Hi A.,
I wanted to let you know that we are going through the exact same thing. I have a 2 1/2 year old boy (not potty trained) who's diapers leak almost every night for the past month or so. I have tried huggies (5s changed to 6s), pampers, babydry, a nightime brand, a plastic covering, double diapering....I feel like I have tried everything and nothing has helped. Sorry I don't have a solution but if you find one, please let me know and I will do the same. In the mean time...you are probably doing lots of laundry like I am!

I had this issue with my daughter every time I tried any diaper except for Pampers. I found they were worth the extra money. Every single time I went for the sale brand she leaked. Hope this helps.

Dear A.,
My son was a whizzer too.
You can buy packs of diaper liners. They sell them in the diaper aisle. They worked great for me.
They are almost the equivalent of those huge maxi pads they give you after you have a baby or gyno surgery.
They just fit inside the diaper and really help to absorb the extra liquid.
And, if the diapers are a little too big, it will help take up a little room.

I was afraid to mention this because I didn't want to get too personal, but someone else did.
I learned with my little boy to make sure your son's winkie is pointing downward when you pull up the diaper liner and diaper. It does help.

I agree with the other poster who said the reason it is coming out of the top is that little boys get erections at night.

I found a sheet at K-Mart that was flannel on one side and rubber or vinyl on the other. It is about 3 feet square and is much easier to wash and deal with the all of the bedding.

MY 1 1/2 yr old daughter had the same problem. I finally found "Diaper Doublers" and havent had the problem ever since then. I put in two insert into her night time diaper and they have worked wonders. The only place that I have been able to consistantly find them is Babies R Us but even there they seem to be out of stock for week periods at a time. I usually call beforehand to see if they have them and then I buy a few packs. I believe they run 30 in a pack for about $3.00.

Best of luck!

If he is 3-4T they do make nightitme pullups. You can buy them at walmart. Huggies. They work super. Now that my little guy is bigger than that I use the good nights pullups.

Hi A.,
My daughter always has a problem peeing through her diaper at night so I use size 7 Pampers cruisers and put a diaper doubler inside. You can find diaper doublers at Babies-R-Us and sometimes at Safeway. She is 3 and potty trained during the day, but night time is hard so I cover her bottom with Desitin and use the big diapers w/ doublers. I can't use the Huggies at all anymore, they leak immediately.
Sincerely,
L.

Hello A.. My son is about to turn four next month and still in nightime diapers. I use Huggies brand 6's because all others leaked. They are VERY full by morning, and still noleaks. Be sure his peepee is pointing down before you secure the diaper and tighten it up. I hope this helps. leaks are no fun.

Is there a chance you are using a diaper too big and it wont
fit snuggly enough to stop leaks? Our grand daughter seemed to be growing into size 4 Pampers but started soaking thru each diaper so we went back to 3 and it stopped. The 4s seemed too long and were baggy with large leg openings. No matter how snug we got the waist,,the legs were too big. We also found Huggies leak almost instantly without soaking up anything. I wouldnt stop liquids too early at night. They need fluids and having something in the bladder actually strengthens the muscles to help hold it better than an empty bladder. Good luck, and enjoy him while hes a little
squirt". (o:

You should definitely try the Nature BabyCare overnights or their diapers. They are incredibly absorbent! It might also be that his, errr.. "equipment" is pointed up or to the side, that's why the diaper doesn't seem full but it's wet on top or the side and therefore leaky. Happens with my son every now and then. Just make sure when changing him that his business end is pointed down. Good luck. You can get the Nature BabyCare diapers or training pants on www.diapers.com, Elephant Pharmacy or at select Targets. They are totally natural (no gel) and biodegradable.

Hi,

I just was a Target today and saw that they have jammies pull ups they llok loke boxer shorts and it was up to 45lbs weight. T think they are made by pampers. I have a 3 1/2 little girl and I know what you mean about night time wetting. I understand as well about drinking kids seem to always be thristy. I am not sure I helped but I understand what you are going thru. Good luck on your birth of your new baby and wishing a safe return home for your husband.

I have to say that I actually had this problem with both my kids. The overnights worked on my daughter at night with no problems. My son, however, had the problem during the day too, so overnights were too expensive. I have found that Costco brand diapers absorb SOOOOO much better than any other brand I've tried and are very cheap comparatively too. Another plus is that you get a Ginormous box, so I only have to buy diapers like once or twice a month now!! If you're only doing it for nights, you would hardly ever have to buy them! I wish I had discovered them sooner!

For nights, switch out of diapers and into Pull-ups, OverNights, or Under Jams (My daughter prefers these because they are soft and no one can tell she is wearing them. They don't make diaper sounds when she walks.). They hold a ton.

Hi A.!

If I understood your problem correctly......It sounds like his diaper isn't really full after waking, however the urine sneaks out the top and the sides?

Having 2 boys, and LOTS of "pee pee" experience :o), I would say it's because your son is having erections during his sleep. The "aim" is straight out the top, or off to the side, depending on how he's laying. Even if you switch sizes, you might not be able to fix the problem completely, but I would put him back into a size 5. The tighter the better for this situation :o)

I think that will take care of this temporary problem, because soon enough he'll be potty trained completely.

Good Luck :o)

Hi A.-

I have two suggestions - ask him to use the bathroom at a few scheduled evening times even if he doesn't "need" (feeling-wise) to go - when you get back from the park, after dinner, and before bed just to empty his bladder a bit - so his body is less full when he's sleeping.
